Scientists Are About To Resurrect A 30,000-Year-Old Virus “To Discover If It Is Harmful To Humans”

A ‘monster’ virus which has lain dormant in the frozen wastelands of northeastern Russia is about to be resurrected by researchers curious of its potential effects.

Scientists anticipate “reanimating” a 30,000-year-old virus to learn more about it and discover if it is harmful to animals or humans. Mollivirus sibericum, which translates to soft Siberian virus, has been dubbed “Frankenvirus” by many who are in opposition of the quest to bring it back to life. 

In contrast to other viruses, the soft Siberian bug is a monster. Not only does it have 523 genetic proteins and measures 0.6 microns, it can also be seen using light microscopy.

As BBC News reports, the Mollivirus sibericum virus is the fourth prehistoric virus to have been discovered since 2003, and experts warn climate change and thawing ice could resurrect similar – and perhaps even more dangerous – pathogens.

The French National Center for Scientific Research made the discovery in the Kolyma lowland region of Russia. The soft Siberian virus is the second of its kind to be found by the team. In 2003, researchers discovered the Minivirus, followed by the Pandoraviruses in 2013, and Pithovirus sibericum which was discovered last year.

Reserachers wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS): 

The saga of giant viruses started in 2003. Two additional types of giant viruses have been discovered [and] we now describe Mollivirus sibericum, a fourth type of giant virus isolated from the same permafrost sample. These four types of giant virus exhibit different structures, sizes, genome length, and replication cycles. Their origin and mode of evolution are the subject of conflicting hypotheses. The fact that two different viruses could be easily revived from prehistoric permafrost should be of concern in a context of global warming.

The regions in which these mega microbes are being discovered are being increasingly exploited for their mineral resources, especially oil. As Upriser shares, the rate at which they are exploited will no doubt increase as the areas become more accessible due to melting ice and climate change.

Said lead researcher Jean-Michel Claverie:

A few viral particles that are still infectious may be enough, in the presence of a vulnerable host, to revive potentially pathogenic viruses. If we are not careful, and we industrialize these areas without putting safeguards in place, we run the risk of one day waking up viruses such as small pox that we thought were eradicated.

That’s definitely concerning. 

In the lab, Professor Claverie and his team will attempt to resurrect the newly discovered virus by placing it with a single-cell amoeba, which will serve as its host. The virus Pithovirus sibericum was revived in March 2014 using similar techniques.

UPDATE:

Research has been carried out, and according to co-author Dr Chantal Abergel, the virus “comes into the cell, multiplies and finally kills the cell. It is able to kill the amoeba – but it won’t infect a human cell.”

Still, a lot of controversy surrounds the scientists plan to “revive” the Mollivirus sibericum virus. Different than most viruses circulating today, these ancient pathogens are not only bigger, they’re far more complex genetically.

The recently discovered virus has more than 500 genes, and the Pandoravirus found in 2003 has 2,500. Compare that to the Influenza A virus which has eight genes.

Of course, a philosophical debate will not deter scientists from doing their work, but a number of pros and cons deserve to be weighed before further research is conducted.

In 2004, United States scientists resurrected the “Spanish flu” virus, which ended up killing tens of millions of people at the start of the 20th century. The revived the virus to understand why the pathogen was so virulent. 

Researchers from the States traveled to Alaska to take frozen lung tissues from a woman who was buried in permafrost, and teased genetic details out of the samples and from autopsy issues stored in formalin. Their work allowed the team to reconstruct the code for the virus’ eight genes – but at what cost? All the work was done in a top-security lab at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), yet still wasn’t contained.

We have to ask ourselves as an informed public – and voice our concerns to those ‘in charge’ – if “reviving” a monster virus and is really in the best interest of the public.

4 Ways to Keep From Being Overwhelmed by the Tribe

Sometimes the tribe can be a bit suffocating. Whether “the tribe” is familial, societal, or cultural, it can make even the most extraverted of us claustrophobic. Sometimes in order to keep from being subjugated and engulfed by the status quo, we need to break away. We need to discover a secret place, a sacred space, where we are free to howl at the moon and bow to the sun without a judgmental eye over our shoulder. Where North is a drumroll, and South is a compass. Where we can count to infinity and surf the cosmic wave without the clanking of steel or the honking of horns in our ear. Where East is a crossroads, and West is a threshold. Where we are free to slap the face of God and dance with our demons, and vice versa, without a disapproving finger-wag or a whiny “blasphemy!” from the outdated crowd. Sometimes in order to discover our true place in this life we must disrupt our lives. Like Charles Simic poetically stated, “He who cannot howl, will not find his pack.” In the spirit of finding our place in the world, our sacred pack, here are four ways to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.

1.) Meditation and Solitude

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity” –John Muir

Mankind is fundamentally connected with the Earth and with the cosmos. Neither the Earth’s problems nor humanity’s problems can be resolved without taking full account of this interdependence. And so it goes with the alienation between cosmos and psyche within the individual.

A powerful way to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe is meditation and solitude. Doing so tears through the veil of ignominy and launches us past the smoke and mirrors of the cultural paradigm. The struggle of independence and codependence between the individual and the tribe melts away into the peace of interdependence, which is why it is usually while we’re immersed in nature that we feel the most alive. As Henry David Thoreau said, “Life consists with wildness. The most alive is the wildest. Not yet subdued to man, its presence refreshes him… Wildness is the preservation of the World.”

It is out in the wild places, away from the commotion of the tribe which is incessantly “distracted from distraction by distraction,” where we discover for ourselves what is medicine and what is poison. Solitude and meditation helps us figure out this most basic energy: how to discern between healthy and unhealthy, right and wrong, good and bad, and what to do about it in regards to the self, the tribe, and the world. As Sogyal Rinpoche said, “What we have to learn in both meditation and in life is to be free of attachment to the good experiences and free of aversion to the negative ones.”

2.) Throw Yourself Into Adventure

“If you end up with a boring, miserable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your priest, or some guy on television telling you how to do your shit, then you deserve it.” –Frank Zappa

Tired of living a boring life? Sick of walking around in circles within a tiny comfort zone that constricts your way of being in the world? Weary of the yoke of civilization herding you into a life of nine-to-five slavery and daily grinds? There are ways out of boredom: stop being boring. There are strategies for stretching comfort zones: do constructive things that make you uncomfortable. Comfort is as much of an obstacle as the obstacle itself, whatever the obstacle may be. Quit your job and seek out real, sacred, authentic work that makes your soul sing, no matter how scary it might be getting started. Go where the fear is. Test your boundaries. Courage is to fear as diamond is to “in the rough.”

So throw yourself into adventure. Toss yourself into a sacred journey. Chuck your too-conditioned heart into the unconditional abyss. Lob your overly-brainwashed brain into the crushing waves of the cosmic ocean. Hurl your cowardice into the fire of your fear and bear witness as the unstoppable Phoenix of your courage rises out of the ashes. Slip your cover. Discard all masks. Discover the naked vulnerability of your heart-soul pulsing against the hard gravity of an unforgiving universe. Lose your footing. Lose your balance. Fall flat on your face if you have to. Then rise up from the dust with a full heart; with the blood, sweat and tears of your daring marring your overrated reputation. In short, die a small death. Only the death of your ego can give birth to your soul. Like Mark Twain said, Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

3.) Overcome Yourself

“The real struggle of the heroic individual is not solely to liberate himself from conflict with society, but rather to use the conflict within himself as a source for self-regeneration.” –Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen

Could there be anything more powerful, more self-evolving, more vitally important to our own time, than the ability to self-overcome? To take in hand the tangled knot of the ego and dare to unravel it? To gaze into a mirror and brave the shattered depths? To peel back layer after layer, security blanket after security blanket, until the soft, vulnerable, baby-Hydra-self is revealed? To gamble with our sense of self and, having won or lost, emerge with the hard-fought-for scars that prove the course of our wisdom. Perhaps Joss Whedon said it best, “Don’t just be yourself. Be all of your selves.”

The best way to maintain vigilance over our inconsistent personality is to simply roll with the inconsistencies by assuming a multitude of personas. One could argue that the more personas we adopt the more likely we are to be individuated. The more masks we don and discard, the more likely we are to achieve a humor of the most high. This is precisely because of cognitive dissonance. Since our personalities are inconsistent and change is inevitable anyway, it behooves us to adapt and overcome to such change rather than deny that the change is occurring. We do this through adopting multiple personas that may or may not be consistent with a dominant persona. This has the potential to increase empathy, humor, and love; in the sense that the more personas we can identify with –like latent shadow personas and darker personalities– the more likely we are to subsume the human condition itself, or at least be able to compassionately relate to other people’s difference as we have already learned how to relate to the plentitude of differences within ourselves.

4.) Amorally Rebel

Look inward and ask yourself: am I caught inside a grand cognitive illusion? Play with the answers until questions emerge. Toy with the ideas that arise until they become ideals, and then crush them like you would a mental paradigm. We are caught between moral and immoral, between left and right, between good and evil, between healthy and unhealthy; between so many illusory dualities that we mistakenly begin to see the world dualistically. But it’s not. Nothing is fixed. Everything is in flux. There is no black and white. There is no permanence. There is only a smeared out Middle Gray blank-slate that we vainly attempt to pigeonhole colors onto. Like Robert Anton Wilson said, “The border between the Real and the Unreal is not fixed, but just marks the last place where rival gangs of shamans fought each other to a standstill.”

But there’s no reason whatsoever that you yourself cannot rise up as one of these shamans and fight “whatever” to a standstill, keeping in mind that the “standstill” is the illusion. It’s the “fight” that’s real. It’s the struggle with a universe in constant flux that’s real. It’s between the extremism at either end of the spectrum of power where the real sacred dance is occurring. It’s in the throes of amoral rebellion where we shine brightest. The moralist is blinded by too much light. The immoralist chokes on too much darkness. The amoralist pierces the dark with their light and diffracts the light with their darkness.

Amoral rebellion puts the powers that be on high notice. We will not be pigeonholed into their outdated constructs of power. We will not be placated by bipartisan claptrap. We will not be bamboozled by plutocratic smoke and mirrors. We will not be consumed by the tribe. We will rise above it and self-evolve, dragging it, kicking and screaming through the brambles of our own fruition if need be. We will become a power unto ourselves, a freedom unto ourselves. We will become a force to be reckoned with. Like Bill Plotkin said, “The world was made to be free in: this we know in our bones, and this definitive and fearful knowledge is what both supports us and requires us to turn away from our secure but less-than-joyful lives.”

Sound Healing – The Power of Sound

In the beginning was the word and the word was God. The Hebrew translation for word can also been interpreted as sound. If the word of God was a sound then, could that be the reason for this material creation? There are ancient mystics and sages who believe that the sound Aum or Om is the sound of creation. More recently, back in the 1960’s Swiss scientist Dr Hans Gerry researched the Cymatic frequencies and how they influence physical form. This exploration of the effects of Cymatic frequencies on matter came up with some breathtaking results and I have included the links below this article. Sound really does affect our physical condition in many ways, and this is what I want to explore with this article. Cymatics shows us that sound creates form, and can heal also.

Jonathan Reid is another Cymatic researcher, who is a musician and a scientist. Jonathan was researching these Cymatic patterns within the walls of the Kings chamber inside the Great Pyramid. He was experiencing great back pain while conducting the experiments, and later realised that the pain had disappeared and never came back, and it was the culmination of the sound frequencies that healed his back. We do use sound for healing in hospitals today in the form of ultrasound, which is used to heal tissue, can decrease swelling and gives a gentle massage to the affected area. So we already use sound in today’s modern world for healing and health, but all the possibilities have not been explored as yet. Let us go back in history and see where this was used then.

Pythagoras and Sound Healing

He worked out that music is mathematics and he would perform what he called ‘soul adjustments’ with this music. Pythagoras used intervals, including the Fibonacci series, as a medicine for the body and the emotions. The Fibonacci series of numbers can be found everywhere in nature, and are looked upon as the building blocks of life. If we look at the scale of western music, a scale comprises of 8 notes, and the chord sequence of that note is the third and fifth note. The Fibonacci series starts at the beginning, which is zero, and then the next number is 1. Add zero and one together and you get one. Add one to that and you get two. Add one to two and you get three. Add two and three and you get five. Add three and five and you get eight and it goes up like that. So the numbers go up like this 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233 and so on. The Fibonacci series gives perfect balance in growth and movement, so therefore you get a balanced expansion. So now can you see that the first note, the third note, the fifth note and the octave (eighth note) is all part of the Fibonacci series in relation to a musical scale.

Another researcher into Sound healing is Jonathan Goldman. He also has researched heavily into the use of sound by the ancients and has made many great discoveries. He also realised while working in an anechoic chamber that the nervous system has a sound, and that sound could be affected by tuning forks. Einstein spoke about the Universal Energy Field and explained that this is the only reality. In modern life today we are being detuned from that field and we all need to find ways to tune us back up. Sound healing is a great way of doing this. We have seven energy vortex points that run up the spine of the body, known in Eastern philosophies as the chakra system and these can all be opened and tuned by tuning folks. The tuning of the chakra system simply runs up the C scale in musical terms. C, D, E, F, G, A and B. C is the root chakra, D is the sacral chakra, E is the solar plexus chakra, F is the heart chakra, G is the throat chakra, A is the third eye chakra and B is the crown chakra. Once you start to work with these chakras and sound, your reality starts to look different. I found this to be an amazing journey.

Bin-aural beats and the Fibonacci sequence

Binaural beats are created by playing two different tones in each headphone, no less than 1 Hz and no more than 30 Hz, and the brain will process these two beats by filling in the difference between the two frequencies. If you have 400 Hz in one earpiece and 410 Hz in the other earpiece, you are creating a binaural beat of 10 Hz in your brain. The five cognitive states your brain operates in are Gamma (over 40 Hz), Beta (13 – 39 Hz), Alpha (7 – 13 Hz), Theta (4 – 7 Hz) and Delta (<4 Hz). As the frequencies decrease, cognitive focus and alertness decrease. You will start to move to more meditative states depending on what Binaural beat you are listening to. I have been working with Doctor Tomasz Kopec, who is known for his research into Open Focus Theory, and we have come up with an exercise that is designed to help you get into a meditation state very easily. We have combined one of Tomasz’s exercises with music tuned to the relative chakra with a binaural beat placed in the background. So while being guided by the exercise, you will have the binaural beat also working to get you into the desired state, and some music to ease you through the gaps in the exercise. You may get it the first time, or it may take a few attempts, but you should feel refreshed and relaxed after the exercise.

We have four exercises in this series. The first exercise is just a general exercise and the binaural beat is based on the pulse of the earth, the Schumann pulse, which is 7.8 Hz. This is also the frequency of the Alpha state for the brain, which is wakeful relaxation. This is the desired frequency for rest and digest, which is a human state this modern world doesn’t seem to allow us to visit very much. Here is a very simple exercise you can use daily for your body to get into that healing zone. The first exercise has been designed by Doctor Tomasz Kopec to diffuse your attention. The other three exercises are designed to go up the chakra system, so the second exercise is the sacral chakra, the third exercise is the heart chakra and the fourth exercise is the third eye chakra. These exercises with the relevant binaural beat and sounds used for the tuning of the chakra will enable you to open up the three most powerful chakras in your system and release the full potential of you as a human being. Our world is becoming more and more obsessed with the physical body. We are being dragged into this material world by the meme we live in, and by choosing to wake up your energy body, you will be making a great change for yourself. You will start to wake up the senses, see the mad world for what it is and start to realise that you need to wake up, pay attention and do something about changing yourself, and changing the world around you. Our energy body, or you may have heard of it as a light body, can carry the physical body. Indeed it does especially in the Western world with our bad diet, additions and habits. When you begin to wake up to your energy or light body, you understand that if you want to work at an optimum, these two bodies should work in tandem with each other. So both of these bodies need good fuel, exercise and the proper rest to work properly. Our exercises will help you to rest and you may not notice the change in you at first, but, with time, I am sure you will start to feel the difference. This world is a wonder and if we all start to experience it from that understanding, then things will change automatically for the better. We all need love. We all want to avoid suffering. We all want a better world. So rather than staying in systems that do not serve humanity as a whole, let us rid the ones that no longer work that are being controlled from the shadows, and make the ones stronger that do. The first steps are easy really. Choose love or choose fear. We believe these exercises will help you make steps to find the real you inside, where you can now start to build the life you want, and then start to help others build the life they want around you. So what is good for me is good for you. It is a very simple principle in theory, so why not put it into practice. The time is now and a new world is waiting for us when we reach the numbers to make the true change this world is crying out for. Turn on, tune in and chill out. Yeah!!!!!!

Community is Waiting

You Are Not Alone

Why a sense of isolation often engulfs and disempowers us is peculiar. We have mothers, fathers, friends, family and even new heartfelt alliances all around us yet we still feel this yearning.

Are we searching for a greater, more truly connected family?

I tend to think so. All evidence points to the fact that we are not who we have been told we are. We are each part of something so much greater and grander than we ever imagined.

And we search for that greater connectivity.

We’re Alive!

The link ups between all of us on planet earth are way more “spooky” and profound than we’ve been led to believe. We simply find each other as we continue our search. That’s how it works. Like the wondrous mycelium network crawling through the ground to hook up with itself, we organic, conscious beings sent to this planet are finding each other through a very wonderful, organic process.

We’re alive, we’re growing, and we’re even protected, buried as if in the heart of mother earth’s warm and succulent soil.

Totally contrary to the fear ridden narrative we’re being handed here on the surface, we are actually quite safe in the bosom of love itself. This is what you sense in your heart of hearts and can have complete confidence in.

That’s innate empowerment. And the place from which we should all operate.

Underlying and Overarching Love

This is the true nature of existence. The fear based projection we’re witnessing in today’s societal construct is an illusion. It appears real, but it’s not. It hits your screen and gets activated only if you buy into it. As the expression goes, fear is “false evidence appearing real.” We simply need to live outside of that false reality.

When you “wake up” this is apparent. Your life takes on new dimensions as your true spirit gets released. This is the time to make new, conscious decisions as to the course of your life and act on them. As well as make new friends and relationships from all quarters that you never imagined possible, but suddenly become completely natural as they unfold before you. A wonder-full experience!

It feels like a magnificent gift when it happens but it’s really only a re-discovery that was buried by a plethora of outside influences. Once you see these external projections for what they are and pierce through the veil of deceit it all becomes extremely clear. And it’s marvelous! Suddenly everything comes into perspective and life begins anew. This is where the birth of realization happens and we see everything has an underlying message of love and empowerment.

When you know you’ve hit pay dirt you just know it. It’s experiential and no one can deny that to you.

The Next Step

Move on, with confidence and courage. The barrage of denial and discreditation will always be there. Brush it aside. You’re living on a planet of mainly unawakened beings. You’ll find your way to others like yourself but never bend to societal pressures to conform to the norm. The “whirled” out here is still finding its footing, but is still steeped in the maws of desperate manipulators who want things their way and are playing on every pre-programmed string they can to do so.

This is why it’s important to identify their every action for what it is. We awakened don’t want to fall into any of their mind twisting, subversive trickery. That’s the motive for everything they do, no matter the well meaning dupes they enlist in their programs. Ours is to stay above it and operate consciously.

This will bring about the greatest good and ultimate positive outcome.

But it won’t come without a price. Too much has been invested by these dark forces to attempt to quash our awakening for them not to use their machinations. No worries, it never compares to conscious awareness, we just have to learn to utilize it in great, well foundationed confidence.

Use great wisdom in the days to come. Find your true family first and foremost, but prepare against the storm nonetheless.

And always remember, we are ultimately living in the bosom of love!

Have you had the experience of dealing with the same problem again and again? Because the Law of Attraction governs our lives, our thoughts and feelings are what create our reality, and this includes our problems! Sometimes we have a negative focus that has become so strong it causes us to attract the same problem repeatedly.

So, why might we have a negative focus like this? Below are three common habits that cause problems to repeat themselves through negative attention. If you find you find yourself experiencing the same problem again and again, check to see if any of these behaviors are at play:

1. Talking or complaining about the problem:

For many of us, this is the strongest reason why we attract problems repeatedly. Most of us talk a lot, and we tend to tell the same story again and again. Complaining about a back problem, a bad relationship or a rude boss can become addictive, and this generates a lot of extra magnetism for these negative circumstances.

The good news is that it’s fairly easy to stop complaining. At first, biting one’s tongue might be a bit uncomfortable, but with a little bit of practice it is easy to limit the negative talk.

2. Obsessively thinking about the problem:

While most people in society believe that worrying is critical for our survival, nothing could be further from the truth. When we worry about our problems we generate more momentum for them, and we find ourselves further and further away from the solutions we need.

Though many of us understand that negative thinking causes problems, changing our thoughts is still often easier said than done. Our thoughts move at a very quick pace and come without much effort, so “thought control” can be a bit tricky.

It is important to remember that even though you are able to change many of your intentional thoughts, you will have still have some unwanted unintentional thoughts here and there, and that’s ok. A few negative thoughts won’t ruin your life, so please give yourself some leniency on this one, especially in the beginning.

With that being said, when we find ourselves completely obsessing about a problem, we can do some deliberate distraction, and this can have a very profound effect over the situation at hand.

The next time you find yourself worried or anxious about a problem, simply tell yourself something along the lines of “I can solve this problem later, but right now I am going to focus on something a bit more uplifting.” Then, find an activity to do that brings a a little more joy into your life.

You could watch a funny movie, call a good friend, or practice a hobby that makes you happy. You could also listen to uplifting music or do some light exercise.

Distraction is a great habit to develop because it gets you pointed in the right direction vibrationally. If each time you find yourself obsessing, you take a step back and distract yourself into a higher vibration, you will generate a habit that helps you bounce back from negative thoughts quickly in all areas of your life.

With practice, it will become your default behavior to distract yourself when your thoughts become too negative. When positive distraction becomes your automatic response to obsessive negative thinking, you will see a powerful change in the quality of your reality.

3. Acting out of fear:

Our actions have the ability to affect our vibration and our beliefs. Not only are our actions a reflection of our vibration and how we feel inside, but they also have the power to change our vibration and how we feel inside.

For example, perhaps you’ve heard that when you are feeling down you can simply practice smiling to improve your mood a bit. Even though the smile isn’t genuine, the simple act of smiling mirrors itself inside with an emotional boost.

This works because our our moods and our actions work together in tandem. Altering our moods will change our behaviors, and altering our behaviors will also change our moods. Therefore, by changing our behaviors regarding a problem, we change the way we feel about the problem, and then the problem manifests differently in our reality.

For this reason, the actions we choose to engage in have a tremendous effect on the circumstances we are attracting. When we are struggling with the same issue repeatedly, we can usually find some behaviors that indicate fear of the problem. By reducing and eliminating these fearful behaviors, we can consciously alter our beliefs and vibration regarding the subject.

For example, if I have been struggling to stay healthy, it is possible that I am behaving as if I am afraid of getting sick. Perhaps I have been obsessively washing my hands, taking immunity vitamins and avoiding all of the sick people in my life. In turn, this negative, fearful focus (ironically) draws sickness closer to me.

Why is this? It’s because I am sending a message to the universe that is screaming “I am afraid I am going to get sick!”

Again, we get what we focus on, whether it’s something we want or not! When we take fear-based actions to avoid sickness, all the universe knows is that we are thinking about getting sick. So, though these actions are taken with the intention of reducing illness, in many cases they actually increase illness.

It’s always a good rule of thumb to evaluate our choices in our actions, especially when things aren’t going our way. When we are attracting repeated unwanted events it’s wise to pause and ask ourselves if we are running toward what we want or running away from what we don’t want.

It doesn’t matter which direction we are running in. As long as we are running we are strongly focused and therefore in the mode of attraction.

Now, this isn’t to say you shouldn’t wash your hands, wear a seatbelt or take your vitamins. If these actions make you feel better about the situation, by all means do what you have to do. Feeling protected is a higher vibrational place than feeling exposed and vulnerable is, so if taking a protective action helps you feel safe in the moment go for it.

That being said, if you find you are making great efforts to avoid your fear, these obsessive actions are absolutely part of the problem. Like obsessive thoughts, obsessive actions are dangerous because they indicate a strong focus on the unwanted.

Always remember, the greatest protection you will ever have is vibrational alignment. When you are projecting a very high vibration, you are 100% safe, and will only attract wanted events and circumstances. If you feel that you need protection on a regular basis, take some steps to raise your vibration and work to lessen your dependency on protective actions.

So when you find yourself trapped in Groundhog’s Day and the same problem is popping up repeatedly, take some steps to evaluate and adjust your approach. Avoid talking about the problem, distract yourself from obsessive thoughts and reduce the tendency to act out of fear.

This three-pronged approach will slow (and eventually stop!) the negative attention that is drawing the same problem in your life again and again.

As a final note, please remember it’s always best to crawl before you walk. Go easy on yourself if at first you struggle to stop talking about a persistent problem, or if your thoughts or actions are still worrisome and fearful. We aren’t aiming for perfection here, we’re simply trying to slow down the negative momentum.

Every time you choose higher vibrational thoughts and actions you reduce negative attraction, so pat yourself on the back for your achievements and give yourself a pass when you slip up. Eliminating an established negative attraction requires some practice and, of course, some patience with oneself.

On Past Life Regression

Advancing Past Life Regression


The leading book in the field of past life regression has long been Dr. Brian Weiss’ Many Lives, Many Masters. Nine out of ten people who contact me for regression have read it. It stands as most people’s sole reference point. Without it, I don’t know that past life regression would have survived its initial surge in popularity in the 80’s and 90’s. Published in 1988, it remains a compelling tale of therapy and healing over 25 years later. The power of the story displayed the potential of the tool, though it did not tell us what to do with that power.

Over the last few decades, a handful of competent professional manuals, handbooks and journals have been printed, though few have revitalized the thinking that was presented decades ago. Many gifted practitioners have offered their methods in a clinical and procedural manner, replete with structured theories on specific times and places which occur before and after life that are inherently spiritual. The name itself, “Past Life Regression,” suggests a succession of past lifetimes, which can render the interpretation of regression experiences as something other than past lifetimes — or something more — as anathema.

Like meditation, sex and rollercoasters, past life regression is an experience. Having and sharing these experiences is often so intoxicating and evocative, you can easily lose yourself in devotion to it. Talking about these experiences is akin to describing music. You just have to hear it.

Interpreting Spiritual Information

When leading a workshop, I’ll sometimes ask, “Who here considers past life regression spiritual information?” Generally, everyone will raise his or her hand. Then I’ll ask, “What is spiritual information?” To which most people will look around and sit quietly until I admit that I do not know either.

My journey into the interpretation of spiritual information began in Turkey in 2007 when I was told that I would have what I wanted and it would come easily. She was an Istanbul local named Ferme, reading my coffee grinds. Before a reading of coffee grinds, you drink a cup of Turkish coffee which is generally a dark, rich, semi-sweet equivalent to an espresso, and when finished turns the cup over on its saucer, spilling the grinds. Ferme was studying to become a regression therapist under my father, the late Dr. Jeffrey Ryan.

Hypnosis and past life regression are the family business. English was not Ferme’s first language. When she told me “You’ll have what you want and it will come easily,” it was immediately followed by a rush of dopamine to my head confirming the good news. Until some time later when I began to consider its usefulness (and my naiveté), along with all the other information occupying this nebulous area of my understanding. The advice from psychics and intuitives, the passing commentary of therapists and teachers, the interpretations of astrologers and tarot readers, the wisdom of mystics and seers, my father’s words… How do we know what is useful? How do we measure truth without the benefit of mathematics?

I don’t claim to know the answers to these questions. They are philosophical and somewhat rhetorical. As the words are examined, I’m reminded that language is simply a set of symbols or tools. How then do we interpret the symbols? How do we use the tools?

I take no position — professionally or personally — on which of my client’s experiences are real and which are unreal. I do not see it as my job to qualify my clients and student’s experiences for them.

I do help them to interpret the information. I do offer my opinions and guidance where I think it will illuminate. My “belief” in reincarnation is a small observation with large implications. All I see around me are cycles of life beginning, ending and beginning again. Why would we be any different? Perhaps Voltaire said it best centuries ago: “It is not more surprising to be born twice than once; everything in nature is resurrection.” I make no claim to understand how it works, nor do I disqualify anyone else’s beliefs, but it does appear to me this happens.

About Past Life Regression

During a past life regression you are ideally in a deep state of relaxation that is easy, present, open and aware. The guidance you receive during the average regression will be much like a guided meditation, and will usually begin with progressive relaxation or guided imagery. In this state you will be walked through a series of immersive experiences that may or may not be memories of past lifetimes. The “memories” themselves should be produced by your subconscious mind, and appear to you as if they were being revealed (the dodgy nature of memory notwithstanding). Your attention rests with the senses as you explore the scene. Questions are asked and connections are made to and from the past; the origins of a phobia are finally understood, the roots of a difficult relationship are discovered, loved ones who have passed are reconnected with.

Practitioner methods vary widely depending upon where they trained, who with, the purpose of the regression, as well as their personal preferences, among other things. As with meditation, there is no right way or wrong way. Past life regression is a balance between technique and artistry, guiding the experience confidently and remaining open, intuitive and spontaneous. The practitioner provides the context for the experience; the client provides the content of the experience.

Regulation and certification within the field are both commendable and dubious. I know countless inspiring therapists who do this work actively fighting to raise and maintain professional standards. And I know snake oil salesmen who have polluted the field. All forms of professional and spiritual competition are present, to equally dramatic and comedic effect. Even Dr. Weiss’ story in Many Lives, Many Masters mentions his own censure from the American Medical Association when he became vocal about past life regression. While giant strides have been made and many battles won, in my experience misconceptions and fearful thinking still pervade popular beliefs, especially concerning hypnosis.

Past life regression dates back centuries, though it has only been clinically studied for the past four decades, beginning with Ian Stevenson’s 1974 book Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation, in which he examines the spontaneous recall of previous lives by young children. It is self-evident that this phenomena deserves study and attention, as the insights it offers into the nature of consciousness, and the potential it offers for healing, are both grand and real. It is also clear that these experiences act as metaphors for what we’re experiencing in the present, which in turn points to other possibilities.

Perhaps these experiences connect to the unconscious through metaphor in a manner similar to dreams. Perhaps symbolic reasoning — the uniquely human ability that allows us to use language, exchange money, and comprehend layers of meaning — offers a meta-narrative for the expression of dominant themes in your life at the present moment.

During the past life regression experience, we appear to access a great storytelling machine that pulls out characters, connections and conflicts from an archetypal, Jungian collective unconscious. At the same time, it can be a tremendous creative aid for storytellers. Among my greatest joys have been working dynamically with creative professionals and artists who use past life regression in this fashion.

Moving Past Past Lives

As I see it, in order to advance past life regression the possibility space must be expanded. The groundbreaking discoveries of 40 years ago are reductive today. Regression taps into parts of the brain and the unconscious that we are only beginning to understand. The narratives that arise are immersive, surprising — simultaneously strange and familiar. The act of exploring these states and interpreting them requires great care.

I suggest to my clients and students that they resist the temptation to place their experiences “into a box.” Instead of deciding that what they saw was definitely a past life, or not (or a half-recollection of a book, or a film mixed with a dream…), we should first accept that these stories change as we do. They act as your own personal mythology, and offer new wisdom over time, just like Aesop’s Fables. If we limit our thinking and determine that the experience is definitively this or that, we limit our capacity to learn from it.

As we guess at what occurs after life, I’m often reminded that past life regression is neither a time machine nor a fixed perspective. My sense is that we do not travel into the past or future. But our minds do, all the time. There remains only one time and place where change can happen, and that is in the present. If any one of us somehow managed to possess all the wisdom in the universe, we could still only use it right now.

A teacher once told me that an ocean of knowledge simply cannot fit into the teacup of the mind. In my own practice and in my experiences of past life regression, I’ve come to see the investigation of the afterlife as a rich and seductive area of study, as well as a distraction where the truth can only be guessed.

The imperative, as I see it, is to continue these explorations into our consciousness, our selves. Tools like meditation, hypnotherapy and regression therapy remain mysterious. They are misunderstood largely because we lack a common vocabulary to discuss them and their efficacy. Today, when oceans of knowledge literally do exist on the Internet, available on our phones, studies into projections of the self, non-duality and cycles of life can be undertaken in any living room or on any park bench. We can learn to work with our brains, aligning our habits and diets to optimize relaxed learning states. We can use the past as a school and meditate peacefully in waking daily life, exploring the territory with one shared map.

In the Car, with My Dad

I was a teenager returning home from a past life regression workshop that my father had led. We were driving to Morristown, NJ. It was probably a Sunday. I had been with him all day as he worked with a group of about 20 people, leading them in and out of deep trance states and exploring what may be memories of past lives. I was half assistant/half participant.

After a pause in the conversation he said, “I’m kinda looking forward to dying.” Incredulous, I asked what he meant. He responded “I want to know if there are past lives or not.” My father served for a time as the President of the Association for Past Life Research and Therapies.

It remains thrilling to me, the candid omission of a spiritual teacher, expressing his uncertainty in private conversation with his son. The conversations I have with my clients, students, friends and family feel to me as if I’m still in the car with my dad. There we can comfortably express our doubt and marvel together at the mystery. If past life regression has taught me anything, it’s that we are all in this together.

Wayne was a wise teacher and and inspiration for many millions of people around the globe – including the editors at CLN.  See: “Dr. Wayne Dyer Passes at Age 75: The World Loses a Great Spiritual Leader”

I had the honor of  seeing him speak live on three occasions.  I remember him saying that we should live our lives like the popular children’s song, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”:

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

I really loved Wayne. Other than life itself, he has been my greatest teacher.

I’m sure he’s in a good place now and feeling the love from his multitude of fans.
