Sound Frequency Therapy: A Closer Look

As a family nurse practitioner, I am always in search of non-invasive tools to help my clients return to optimal health. Many times, when I have been able to identify the health issue, it’s the remedy that proves illu­sive. I have welcomed opportunities to learn about energy medicine, in particular. Thus, I would like to begin this article with the teaching of Rudolph Steiner that inspired me to look deeper into the healing power of sound.

Magical Sounds of Spring

Rudolph Steiner once said, “It’s the song of the birds that calls forth spring.” These magical sounds bring about seasonal changes in tempera­ture and moisture. As I thought about Steiner’s words, I felt he was giving insight into the symphony of nature and the turn of the seasons. This, to me, was also an indication that the world sprung forth into form from heav­enly vibrations. Many cultures share myths of creation with some sonorous event.

Sound is a very broad topic, however, especially in the world of energy medicine. In this article, I will focus on what I have learned about how we can harness sound and vibration for healing.

Cymatics

I recently attended a lecture on vibrational medicine techniques by Mandara Cromwell, DCM. She was the first to introduce me to the history of sound healing and highlighted the work of Dr. Hans Jenny, a medical doctor and natural scientist who once taught at Rudolph Steiner’s school in Zurich. Dr. Jenny later went on to coin a new term, “cymatics” (“kymatics” in German), which he used to describe the study of sound wave phenomena. His invention called the “tonoscope” was the first in history to use technology to make sound frequencies visible.

You may have seen cymatics “do-it-your­self” plates on the Internet. The basic procedure involves sprinkling sand on top of a metal plate; then, as a violin bow is strummed on the side of the plate, the vibrating sand forms geometric patterns.

Jenny’s lectures focused on sound as the organizing and integrating pulse behind all mat­ter. The photos from his book Cymatics1 give a never-before-seen glimpse into the universe, showing that it is full of sound and vibratory patterns. Live footage of some of Jenny’s ex­periments, generating images produced by his tonoscope, is totally captivating.2

Jenny’s findings on sound creating form are even more insightful, particularly so when he begins to make the connection to the human form. He wrote: “Throughout the animal and vegetable kingdom Nature creates in rhythms, periods, cycles, frequencies, reduplications, serial phenomena, sequences, etc. This is the style in which natural structures are built, and it is ubiquitous. If we take a few examples, we shall see that this is the all dominant mode of appearance. Let us look at histology, the science which deals with the structure of tissue. The very origin of the word tissue, Latin to weave, is a significant comment on the prevailing con­ditions: cells are arrayed in rows, one pattern following another. . . and fibers continue in sin­ews which irradiate into the ligaments and bone organization. In the fields of the sensory cells, in the layers of the ganglion cells, and in the immensely complex communications between these systems, we still find that this principle of periodic seriality prevails.”1

Thanks to modern-day equipment devel­oped by British acoustics researcher John Stuart Reid, including something called the Cyma- Scope, it has been possible to continue Jenny’s early studies. Using advanced technology, the CymaScope creates spectacular visuals that al­low us to see images of the sound frequencies made by a healthy cell, and, by comparison, the sound and image made by a cancer cell.3

Looking at the sound of cells is a new aspect of the field of cymatics. It seems that when cells are in a healthy state, they produce images of great beauty. When they are not healthy, the sound frequencies of the cells begin to display distortion.

A STRESSFUL TIME

As a nurse practitioner, I observe patients, but also the general trends that have effects on the patient population. Our bodies are burdened daily with numerous toxins that challenge the immune system—through the food we eat, the air we breathe and the countless forms of en­vironmental toxins that constantly bombard us and break down our health potential.

Most healers in the world today would also agree that stress is one of the major underlying causes of disease and that long-term chronic stress leads to inflammatory processes that can accelerate the breakdown of the body’s immune system, resulting in a host of diseases. And most certainly, many negative aspects of stress have come into play with the pandemic. These include, especially, the challenge of viewing the devastation of the disease worldwide and the extended period of time we have spent trying to understand the disease and how it will impact us in the future.

Knowing about the detrimental effects of stress on the immune system, I began to search for non-pharmaceutical tools that could help patients begin to manage their stress levels and possibly prevent or dis­sipate the inflammation that could lead to serious illness. I believe we need tools to offset the effects of stress, so we can better support the immune system. That is our real defense.

Throughout my nursing career, I have watched the western medical field struggle with using “a pill for an ill” and “cut it out” procedures, totally avoiding any other op­tions for patients. But in more recent years, I have witnessed the emergence of more integrative health approaches. I was fortunate to be in one of the first GAPS protocol trainings given by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, and I have learned much in my association with the members of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) as a chapter leader. The holistic orientation of the esteemed WAPF membership continues to help bring attention to the wisdom of previous cultures combined with today’s technologies.

Cellular Coherence

I have continued to further my education in the emerging area of energy medicine. Hence, my attendance at Mandara Cromwell’s lecture on sound. When I first began listening to Cromwell’s presentation, I already knew about the pros and cons of ultrasound— high frequencies that are inaudible—but I then realized that she was speaking of audible sound: sound frequency patterns that could entrain the cells of the body into a type of coherence or state of health.

The frequency patterns Cromwell works with are called “commutations,” so named by a British osteopath with the distinctive name of Dr. Peter Guy Manners. Manners, who passed away in 2009, spent some forty years research­ing therapeutic sound with other British and German scientists, striving to find the “prime resonant frequencies” that could most benefit the human form. These “codes” (combinations of five frequencies) were created to bring the body back into resonance with specific sound combinations.

Cromwell spent years studying with Man­ners, concluding with a doctorate in Cymatic medicine, and has since carried on with Man­ners’ body of work. Cromwell’s contributions to the field of vibrational medicine have included continued research and development of fre­quency patterning as well as the invention of the Acoustic Meridian Intelligence (AMI) devices. Her AMI 750 device applies the fully researched sounds to the body transdermally, through the portals of the feet or hands. The commutations (frequency patterns) are transported along the meridian pathways, long known as the “rivers of life” in Chinese medicine.

In my constant search for tools to improve our immediate environment by seeking “protec­tors” from electromagnetic fields (EMFs), I have wondered—if we can use tools to diminish and block EMF frequencies, why couldn’t we also use frequencies to heal? Thus, I was fascinated to hear Cromwell describe two published studies showing the regeneration of torn tendon tissue in horses using audible sound frequencies.4,5 The proof, revealed in the diagnostic ultrasound images, made perfect sense to me. The words of the “sleeping prophet,” Edgar Cayce, came to mind: “Sound is the medicine of the future.”

The Oral Health Connection

What happened next in Cromwell’s presen­tation is exactly what prompted me to write this article. She began discussing how oral health is related to degenerative conditions. … oral healthThere are more than eighteen hundred published stud­ies catalogued on PubMed linking oral health to serious illnesses and disease processes such as heart attacks, lung disease and cancer—and those are only the beginning of a much longer list.

Interestingly, ischemic conditions are some­times detected when dentists use 3D cone beam imaging or when the patient reports dental pain as a symptom, thereby revealing the underlying deteriorating condition. Cromwell presented numerous thermal images of preliminary re­search with participants who showed significant inflammation in the oral region linked to an ongoing disease process in the body.6 All par­ticipants received the AMI 750 dental health protocol through the feet. This combination of frequencies is known to diminish the inflamma­tory process in the body. Admittedly, it is diffi­cult to imagine that the whole body, particularly the oral cavity, can be affected by transmitting energy through the soles of the feet. But, we must remember, the principles of the AMI 750 come from one of the oldest medical systems in the world—Chinese medicine.

The next slides were of a patient reporting “tooth pain.” The visit to two dentists rendered inconclusive reports. The thermal images showed the oral and neck regions taken before and after a six-week protocol that used sound frequencies administered through the feet. This technique sends the healing frequencies via meridian pathways to the organ systems. Remarkably, the “after” images showed that the inflammatory process was greatly diminished, and the inflamed lymphatic system was free of the congestion indicated in the pre-protocol “before” images.

The next part of Cromwell’s presentation showed a slide of a woman with two crowns, a bridge and some ceramic fillings. Though the patient reported no symptoms, there was evi­dence of significant inflammation around all the areas where dental work had been performed. I had to wonder just how long it would take for this level of inflammation to manifest into a health condition. Certainly, stress and other body burdens would also play a huge part in whether the patient could continue to fight off this undesirable trajectory.

Many integrative health practitioners say you cannot heal your body until you fix your teeth. Though this may be true, the thought of using this type of sound could be a possible so­lution for people who cannot deal with all their dental issues right away—whether for safety reasons (such as identifying a safe schedule for the removal of insufficient dental work) or financial reasons. Could this therapy also be of use as a preventive measure to keep one’s health in balance?

Stimulating the Life Force

The information shared by Cromwell sug­gests that noninvasive sound may be able to help the body manage the burden of highly inflammatory processes and even undiagnosed infections. What I have observed, coupled with the thermographic images and numerous testimonials I have heard and read, is that not only is inflammation substantially reduced after using this type of audible sound frequency (with the AMI 750 device), but patients’ energy and “life force” returns in an astounding way. Of course, this is what we would expect when two of the body’s major struggles (stress and inflam­mation) are alleviated. Lowering stress and inflammation empowers our immune system, allowing us to begin to adapt to the challenges of the world much more effectively.

At this juncture, it certainly seems possible that noninvasive sound therapy may be able to create enough “life force” to fight off the onset of disease. With the therapeutic sound frequency protocols that have been developed, we may finally have the tools needed to fortify our sur­rounding fields and keep our cells vibrating at their optimum health. From the experiments in Dr. Jenny’s laboratory to the research of Reid, Manners and Cromwell, it is clear that it is time to take a closer look at the power of sound waves as a major force of healing and maintenance of overall health.

In the beginning was the word and the word was God. The Hebrew translation for word can also been interpreted as sound. If the word of God was a sound then, could that be the reason for this material creation? There are ancient mystics and sages who believe that the sound Aum or Om is the sound of creation. More recently, back in the 1960’s Swiss scientist Dr Hans Gerry researched the Cymatic frequencies and how they influence physical form. This exploration of the effects of Cymatic frequencies on matter came up with some breathtaking results and I have included the links below this article. Sound really does affect our physical condition in many ways, and this is what I want to explore with this article. Cymatics shows us that sound creates form, and can heal also.

Jonathan Reid is another Cymatic researcher, who is a musician and a scientist. Jonathan was researching these Cymatic patterns within the walls of the Kings chamber inside the Great Pyramid. He was experiencing great back pain while conducting the experiments, and later realised that the pain had disappeared and never came back, and it was the culmination of the sound frequencies that healed his back. We do use sound for healing in hospitals today in the form of ultrasound, which is used to heal tissue, can decrease swelling and gives a gentle massage to the affected area. So we already use sound in today’s modern world for healing and health, but all the possibilities have not been explored as yet. Let us go back in history and see where this was used then.

Pythagoras and Sound Healing

pythagoras and his soul adjustmentsPythagoras has been credited as being the Father of Mathematics, Geometry and Music. Pythagoras was actually a sound healer. He worked out that music is mathematics and he would perform what he called ‘soul adjustments’ with this music. Pythagoras used intervals, including the Fibonacci series, as a medicine for the body and the emotions. The Fibonacci series of numbers can be found everywhere in nature, and are looked upon as the building blocks of life. If we look at the scale of western music, a scale comprises of 8 notes, and the chord sequence of that note is the third and fifth note. The Fibonacci series starts at the beginning, which is zero, and then the next number is 1. Add zero and one together and you get one. Add one to that and you get two. Add one to two and you get three. Add two and three and you get five. Add three and five and you get eight and it goes up like that. So the numbers go up like this 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233 and so on. The Fibonacci series gives perfect balance in growth and movement, so therefore you get a balanced expansion. So now can you see that the first note, the third note, the fifth note and the octave (eighth note) is all part of the Fibonacci series in relation to a musical scale.

Another researcher into Sound healing is Jonathan Goldman. He also has researched heavily into the use of sound by the ancients and has made many great discoveries. He also realised while working in an anechoic chamber that the nervous system has a sound, and that sound could be affected by tuning forks. Einstein spoke about the Universal Energy Field and explained that this is the only reality. In modern life today we are being detuned from that field and we all need to find ways to tune us back up. Sound healing is a great way of doing this. We have seven energy vortex points that run up the spine of the body, known in Eastern philosophies as the chakra system and these can all be opened and tuned by tuning folks. The tuning of the chakra system simply runs up the C scale in musical terms. C, D, E, F, G, A and B. C is the root chakra, D is the sacral chakra, E is the solar plexus chakra, F is the heart chakra, G is the throat chakra, A is the third eye chakra and B is the crown chakra. Once you start to work with these chakras and sound, your reality starts to look different. I found this to be an amazing journey.

wake up your chakrasAnother way to affect the human condition through sound is the use of binaural beats. Binaural beats are created by playing two different tones in each headphone, no less than 1 Hz and no more than 30 Hz, and the brain will process these two beats by filling in the difference between the two frequencies. If you have 400 Hz in one earpiece and 410 Hz in the other earpiece, you are creating a binaural beat of 10 Hz in your brain. The five cognitive states your brain operates in are Gamma (over 40 Hz), Beta (13 – 39 Hz), Alpha (7 – 13 Hz), Theta (4 – 7 Hz) and Delta (<4 Hz). As the frequencies decrease, cognitive focus and alertness decrease. You will start to move to more meditative states depending on what Binaural beat you are listening to. I have been working with Doctor Tomasz Kopec, who is known for his research into Open Focus Theory, and we have come up with an exercise that is designed to help you get into a meditation state very easily. We have combined one of Tomasz’s exercises with music tuned to the relative chakra with a binaural beat placed in the background. So while being guided by the exercise, you will have the binaural beat also working to get you into the desired state, and some music to ease you through the gaps in the exercise. You may get it the first time, or it may take a few attempts, but you should feel refreshed and relaxed after the exercise.

We have four exercises in this series. The first exercise is just a general exercise and the binaural beat is based on the pulse of the earth, the Schumann pulse, which is 7.8 Hz. This is also the frequency of the Alpha state for the brain, which is wakeful relaxation. This is the desired frequency for rest and digest, which is a human state this modern world doesn’t seem to allow us to visit very much. Here is a very simple exercise you can use daily for your body to get into that healing zone. The first exercise has been designed by Doctor Tomasz Kopec to diffuse your attention. The other three exercises are designed to go up the chakra system, so the second exercise is the sacral chakra, the third exercise is the heart chakra and the fourth exercise is the third eye chakra. These exercises with the relevant binaural beat and sounds used for the tuning of the chakra will enable you to open up the three most powerful chakras in your system and release the full potential of you as a human being. Our world is becoming more and more obsessed with the physical body. We are being dragged into this material world by the meme we live in, and by choosing to wake up your energy body, you will be making a great change for yourself. You will start to wake up the senses, see the mad world for what it is and start to realise that you need to wake up, pay attention and do something about changing yourself, and changing the world around you. More and more people are starting to take these steps, and the results are wonderful to see. Here is the link to the first free exercise below.

Change your energy

Our energy body, or you may have heard of it as a light body, can carry the physical body. Indeed it does especially in the Western world with our bad diet, additions and habits. When you begin to wake up to your energy or light body, you understand that if you want to work at an optimum, these two bodies should work in tandem with each other. So both of these bodies need good fuel, exercise and the proper rest to work properly. Our exercises will help you to rest and you may not notice the change in you at first, but, with time, I am sure you will start to feel the difference. This world is a wonder and if we all start to experience it from that understanding, then things will change automatically for the better. We all need love. We all want to avoid suffering. We all want a better world. So rather than staying in systems that do not serve humanity as a whole, let us rid the ones that no longer work that are being controlled from the shadows, and make the ones stronger that do. The first steps are easy really. Choose love or choose fear. We believe these exercises will help you make steps to find the real you inside, where you can now start to build the life you want, and then start to help others build the life they want around you. So what is good for me is good for you. It is a very simple principle in theory, so why not put it into practice. The time is now and a new world is waiting for us when we reach the numbers to make the true change this world is crying out for. Turn on, tune in and chill out. Yeah!!!!!!

Absolutely everything is frequency. You cannot have an experience on this planet without attracting it through frequency. Every emotion, including love and hate tunes into a specific frequency. Health has a frequency. Disease has frequency. Your organs are each tuned to a specific frequency as is your entire body which resonates at its own frequency. You are a symphony of frequencies while you project yourself through this universe and create your physical reality. You are a master of your energy, and thus you are able to control everything you are, everything you do, everything you experience. From the day you are born until the day you die, nothing will ever change the fact that you are both a frequency emitter and receiver in flux with your internal and external environment.

DNA possesses two structural characteristics of fractal antennas, electronic conduction and self symmetry. Electrical conduction allows the movement of electrically charged particles within the body and that flow produces our life force.

Life itself as we know it is inextricably interwoven with geometric forms, from the angles of atomic bonds in the molecules of the amino acids, to the helical spirals of DNA, to the spherical prototype of the cell, to the first few cells of an organism which assume vesical, tetrahedral, and star (double) tetrahedral forms prior to the diversification of tissues for different physiological functions.

The molecules of our DNA, the cornea of our eye, snow flakes, pine cones, flower petals, diamond crystals, the branching of trees, a nautilus shell, the star we spin around, the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of timeless geometric codes.

Our human bodies on this planet all developed with a common geometric progression from one to two to four to eight primal cells and beyond.

The universe is more than 99.999% empty space, including our own bodies. All physical things are made of atoms which are mostly empty space. If the nucleus was the size of a marble, the electrons would be specks of dust a half mile away. Every physical thing has that much empty space in it. Inside that empty space is intelligence and frequency.

Almost everywhere we look, the mineral intelligence embodied within crystalline structures follows a geometry unfaltering in its exactitude. The lattice patterns of crystals all express the principles of mathematical perfection and repetition of a fundamental essence, each with a characteristic spectrum of resonances defined by the angles, lengths and relational orientations of its atomic components.

Note that each larger (or smaller) section is related by the phi ratio, so that a power series of the golden ratio raised to successively higher (or lower) powers are automatically generated

Fibonacci ratios appear in the ratio of the number of spiral arms in daisies, in the chronology of rabbit populations, in the sequence of leaf patterns as they twist around a branch, and a myriad of places in nature where self-generating patterns are in effect. The sequence is the rational progression towards the irrational number embodied in the quintessential golden ratio.

The world and the universe around us are filled with sacred geometry and the golden ratio. From seashells to the human body, from the cosmos to the atom, all forms are permeated with the shapes found in sacred geometry.While sacred geometry theories can be verified mathematically, it is also a field which holds much interest to many different religious communities who can find that it holds deep spiritual meaning for them. Scientists, archaeologists, mathematicians, and many spiritual seekers study sacred geometry as well.

The human genome is packed with at least four million gene switches that reside in bits of DNA that once were dismissed as “junk” but it turns out that so-called junk DNA plays critical roles in controlling how cells, organs and other tissues behave. The discovery, considered a major medical and scientific breakthrough, has enormous implications for human health and consciousness because many complex diseases appear to be caused by tiny changes in hundreds of gene switches.

As scientists delved into the “junk” — parts of the DNA that are not actual genes containing instructions for proteins — they discovered a complex system that controls genes. At least 80 percent of this DNA is active and needed. Another 15-17 percent has higher functions scientists are still decoding.

Most of the molecules in the body are electrical dipoles. These dipoles electronically function like transducers in that they are able to turn acoustic waves into electrical waves and electrical waves into acoustic waves.

A number of membrane proteins as well as DNA consist of helical coils, which may allow them to electronically function as inductor coils. Biological tissues may possess superconducting properties. If certain membrane proteins and the DNA actually function as electrical inductors they may enable the cell to transiently produce very high electrical voltages.

Chronic disease occurs when voltage drops below a certain voltage. Cells then don’t have enough energy to work correctly and amount of oxygen in cells drops, switching from aerobic (oxygen- available) metabolism to anaerobic (oxygen diminished) metabolism.

The natural properties of biomolecular structures enables cell components and whole cells to oscillate and interact resonantly with other cells. The cells of the body and cellular components possess the ability to function as electrical resonators.

Professor H. Frohlich has predicted that the fundamental oscillation in cell membranes occurs at frequencies of the order of 100 GHz and that biological systems possess the ability to create and utilize coherent oscillations and respond to external oscillations.

Because cell membranes are composed of dielectric materials a cell will behave as dielectric resonator and will produce an evanescent electromagnetic field in the space around itself. This field does not radiate energy but is capable of interacting with similar systems.

The applications of certain frequencies by frequency generating devices can enhance or interfere with cellular resonance and cellular metabolic and electrical functions. The changes in the degree that water is structured in a cell or in the ECM will affect the configurations and liquid crystal properties of proteins, cell membranes, organelle membranes and DNA.

Healthy tissues have more structured water than unhealthy tissues. Clinicians who recognize this fact have found that certain types of music, toning, chanting, tuning forks, singing bowls, magnetic waters, certain types of frequency generators, phototherapy treatments and homeopathic preparations can improve water structuring in the tissues and health when they are correctly utilized. The cells of the body are composed of matter. Matter itself is composed of atoms, which are mixtures of negatively charged electrons, positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons. When an electron is forced out of its orbit around the nucleus of an atom the electron’s action is known as electricity. An electron, an atom, or a material with an excess of electrons has a negative charge.

There are multiple structures in cells that act as electronic components. If biological tissues and components of biological tissues can receive, transduce and transmit electric, acoustic, magnetic, mechanical and thermal vibrations then this may help explain such phenomena as:

1. Biological reactions to atmospheric electromagnetic and ionic disturbance (sunspots, thunder storms and earthquakes).

2. Biological reactions to the earth’s geomagnetic and Schumann fields.

3. Biological reactions to hands on healing.

4. Biological responses to machines that produce electric, magnetic, photonic and acoustical vibrations (frequency generators).

5. Medical devices that detect, analyze and alter biological electromagnetic fields (the biofield).

6. How techniques such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and laser (photonic) acupuncture can result in healing effects and movement of Chi?

7. How body work such as deep tissue massage, rolfing, physical therapy, chiropractics can promote healing?

8. Holographic communication.

10. How electrodermal screening works

11. How some individuals have the capability of feeling, interpreting and correcting alterations in another individual’s biofield

Electric fields need to be measured not just as strong or weak, but also as low carriers or high carriers of information.

The Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist Pjotr Garjajev and his colleagues also explored the vibrational behavior of the DNA. The bottom line was: “Living chromosomes function just like solitonic/holographic computers using the endogenous DNA laser radiation.” This means that they managed for example to modulate certain frequency patterns onto a laser ray and with it influenced the DNA frequency and thus the genetic information itself.

Because electric fields conventionally defined as strong thermally may be low in biological information content and electric fields conventionally considered as thermally weak or non-ionizing may be high in biological information content if the proper receiving equipment exists in biological tissues. Weak electromagnetic fields are: bioenergetic, bioinformational, non-ionizing and non-thermal and exert measurable biological effects. Weak electromagnetic fields have effects on biological organisms, tissues and cells that are highly frequency specific and the dose response curve is non linear. Because the effects of weak electromagnetic fields are non-linear, fields in the proper frequency and amplitude windows may produce large effects, which may be beneficial or harmful.

Homeopathy is an example of use weak field with a beneficial electromagnetic effect. Examples of a thermally weak, but high informational content fields of the right frequency range are visible light and healing touch. Biological tissues have electronic components that can receive, transduce, transmit weak electronic signals that are actually below thermal noise.

Those healthy biological organisms have coherent biofields and unhealthy organisms have field disruptions and unintegrated signals. It is said that frequency and thus vibration is the variable of dependence. The genetic wave information from DNA, recorded within the polarizations of connected photons, being quantum-nonlocal, constitutes a broadband radio wave spectrum correlated by means of polarizations with the photons.

There is at present on our planet, a great schism in belief regarding resonant frequency. There are those who believe that yes, we all vibrate to the same frequency, whether it is the vibrational rate of the energy points or the vibrational rate of the liver. And many of these are people who believe they have indeed figured out the vibrational rate of the various organs, other bodily parts and etheric fields have invented instruments, made tapes or created machines which will somehow project the correct resonant frequency back in to the body to heal what ails you.

Then, there are others who believe that we are all unique vibratory beings; that the frequencies of our organs and bodily systems may be different and are not the same.

One fact will always remain…we are all energy bounded by frequency. How we interpret ourselves and our universe is guided by the one elusive concept that scientists still find mysterious, yet intriguing. Until that day comes when more research is devoted to how frequencies affect our entire existence, the answers to those mysteries will remain unanswered.

Cymatics – The Science of the Future

What is a Cymatic water-sound-motion?

Water in a round cup, that is oscillating up and down with a certain frequency, will react on this impulse with waves on her surface. The water oscillates up and down in the middle, like when a stone is thrown in a pool. Like there a ringwave will grow out, and is been followed by other circular waves, all with the same centre, so concentric.

Ernst Chladni

In 1787, the jurist, musician and physicist Ernst Chladni published Entdeckungen über die Theorie des Klangesor ( Discoveries Concerning the Theory of Sound). In this and other pioneering works, Chladni, who was born in 1756, the same year as Mozart, and died in 1829, the same year as Beethoven, laid the foundations for that discipline within physics that came to be called acoustics, the science of sound. Among Chladni´s successes was finding a way to make visible what sound waves generate. With the help of a violin bow which he drew perpendicularly across the edge of flat plates covered with sand, he produced those patterns and shapes which today go by the term Chladni figures. What was the significance of this discovery? Chladni demonstrated once and for all that sound actually does affect physical matter and that it has the quality of creating geometric patterns.

What we are seeing in this illustration is primarily two things: areas that are and are not vibrating. When a flat plate of an elastic material is vibrated, the plate oscillates not only as a whole but also as parts. The boundaries between these vibrating parts, which are specific for every particular case, are called node lines and do not vibrate. The other parts are oscillating constantly. If sand is then put on this vibrating plate, the sand (black in the illustration) collects on the non-vibrating node lines. The oscillating parts or areas thus become empty. According to Jenny, the converse is true for liquids; that is to say, water lies on the vibrating parts and not on the node lines.

Lissajous Figures

In 1815 the American mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch began studying the patterns created by the intersection of two sine curves whose axes are perpendicular to each other, sometimes called Bowditch curves but more often Lissajous figures (see left and below images).

This after the French mathematician Jules-Antoine Lissajous, who, independently of Bowditch, investigated them in 1857-58. Both concluded that the condition for these designs to arise was that the frequencies, or oscillations per second, of both curves stood in simple whole-number ratios to each other, such as 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and so on. In fact, one can produce Lissajous figures even if the frequencies are not in perfect whole-number ratios to each other. If the difference is insignificant, the phenomenon that arises is that the designs keep changing their appearance. They move. What creates the variations in the shapes of these designs is the phase differential, or the angle between the two curves. In other words, the way in which their rhythms or periods coincide. If, on the other hand, the curves have different frequencies and are out of phase with each other, intricate web-like designs arise. These Lissajous figures are all visual examples of waves that meet each other at right angles.

As I pondered the connection between these figures and other areas of knowledge, I came to think about the concept that exists in many societies and their mythologies around the world, which describes the world as a web.

 

For example, many of the Mesoamerican people regarded the various parts of the universe as products of spinning and weaving: “Conception and birth were/…/ compared with the acts of spinning and weaving; all the Aztec and Mayan creation and fertility goddesses were described as great weavers.”(1) A number of waves crossing each other at right angles look like a woven pattern, and it is precisely that they meet at 90-degree angles that gives rise to Lissajous figures.

Hans Jenny

In 1967, the late Hans Jenny, a Swiss doctor, artist, and researcher, published the bilingual book Kymatik -Wellen und Schwingungen mit ihrer Struktur und Dynamik/ Cymatics – The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations. In this book Jenny, like Chladni two hundred years earlier, showed what happens when one takes various materials like sand, spores, iron filings, water, and viscous substances, and places them on vibrating metal plates and membranes. What then appears are shapes and motion- patterns which vary from the nearly perfectly ordered and stationary to those that are turbulently developing, organic, and constantly in motion.

Jenny made use of crystal oscillators and an invention of his own by the name of the tonoscope to set these plates and membranes vibrating. This was a major step forward. The advantage with crystal oscillators is that one can determine exactly which frequency and amplitude/volume one wants. It was now possible to research and follow a continuous train of events in which one had the possibility of changing the frequency or the amplitude or both.
The tonoscope was constructed to make the human voice visible without any electronic apparatus as an intermediate link. This yielded the amazing possibility of being able to see the physical image of the vowel, tone or song a human being produced directly. (se below) Not only could you hear a melody – you could see it, too!
Jenny called this new area of research cymatics, which comes from the Greek kyma, wave. Cymatics could be translated as: the study of how vibrations, in the broad sense, generate and influence patterns, shapes and moving processes.

The Creative Vibration

What did Hans Jenny find in his investigations?
In the first place, Jenny produced both the Chladni figures and Lissajous figures in his experiments. He discovered also that if he vibrated a plate at a specific frequency and amplitude – vibration – the shapes and motion patterns characteristic of that vibration appeared in the material on the plate. If he changed the frequency or amplitude, the development and pattern were changed as well. He found that if he increased the frequency, the complexity of the patterns increased, the number of elements became greater. If on the other hand he increased the amplitude, the motions became all the more rapid and turbulent and could even create small eruptions, where the actual material was thrown up in the air.

The shapes, figures and patterns of motion that appeared proved to be primarily a function of frequency, amplitude, and the inherent characteristics of the various materials. He also discovered that under certain conditions he could make the shapes change continuously, despite his having altered neither frequency nor amplitude!

When Jenny experimented with fluids of various kinds he produced wave motions, spirals, and wave-like patterns in continuous circulation. In his research with plant spores, he found an enormous variety and complexity, but even so, there was a unity in the shapes and dynamic developments that arose. With the help of iron filings, mercury, viscous liquids, plastic-like substances and gases, he investigated the three-dimensional aspects of the effect of vibration.
In his research with the tonoscope, Jenny noticed that when the vowels of the ancient languages of Hebrew and Sanskrit were pronounced, the sand took the shape of the written symbols for these vowels, while our modern languages, on the other hand, did not generate the same result! How is this possible? Did the ancient Hebrews and Indians know this? Is there something to the concept of “sacred language,” which both of these are sometimes called? What qualities do these “sacred languages,” among which Tibetan, Egyptian and Chinese are often numbered, possess? Do they have the power to influence and transform physical reality, to create things through their inherent power, or, to take a concrete example, through the recitation or singing of sacred texts, to heal a person who has gone “out of tune”?
