Between now and next weekend, a 20-year-old satellite – the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) – will make an uncontrolled re-entry through the Earth’s atmosphere. Pieces of the 6.5-ton satellite are expected to survive the fiery plunge and hit our planet. Trouble is, no one knows exactly where.
The chances of being hit by a falling satellite are small. Nick Johnson, chief scientist with NASA’s Orbital Debris Program, told Universe Today:
Numerically, it comes out to a chance of one in 3,200 that one person anywhere in the world might be struck by a piece of debris.
When you think about the seven billion people on Earth today, you see how vanishingly small the probability of being struck really is. After all, most of Earth is ocean, so chances are UARS will go from the fires of re-entry directly to a watery grave in the ocean depths. It’s also important to note that no injury has ever been caused by orbital debris during the half-century that we humans have been placing objects in Earth orbit.
Tongue-in-cheek debris map for UARS re-entry developed by The WeatherSpace.com
NASA says the satellite is likely to begin re-entry on September 23, 2011, give or take a day. Hurtling at five miles (eight kilometers) per second, they say it could land anywhere between 57 degrees N. latitude and 57 degrees S. latitude – basically, most of the populated world.
The satellite was launched in 1991 by the space shuttle Discovery. Designed to operate for three years, six of its ten instruments are still functioning, according to NASA’s UARS page. However, the satellite was officially decommissioned in 2005, at the same time that other satellites took over its work.
This isn’t the first time a massive satellite left orbit and made an uncontrolled re-entry back to Earth. In 1979, Skylab re-entered the atmosphere, causing some nail-biting before it finally struck safely in Australia.
Bottom line: Around September 23, 2011, NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) will make an uncontrolled re-entry through the Earth’s atmosphere. Pieces of the 6.5-ton satellite are expected to survive the fiery plunge through the atmosphere and hit our planet, but the precise location it will strike is unknown. NASA says there is a one in 3,200 chance that a person anywhere in the world might be struck by a piece of debris.

Supercells will return to Tornado Alley on Saturday
| Published on September 16, 2011 12:45 pm PT – By Kevin Martin – Senior Meteorologist – Article Editor and Approved – Warren Miller |

(TheWeatherSpace.com) — A storm system ejecting out of the Southwestern United States today will set the stage for severe weather across the plains on Saturday.
As of right now there are several dynamics coming into play that will promote severe thunderstorms with mainly a hail and wind threat. Strong instability along the dryline will promote rapid growth around the Texas and Oklahoma borders, west and southwest side of the state.
These storms will be developing in an area of increasing low level shear by the evening which could support a brief tornado chance. There are dynamics such as boundary layer stabilization that will diminish the tornado probability toward the evening and early night hours so again this window is very small.

They stretch from Syria to Saudi Arabia, can be seen from the air but not the ground, and are virtually unknown to the public.
They are the Middle East’s own version of the Nazca Lines — ancient “geolyphs,” or drawings, that span deserts in southern Peru — and now, thanks to new satellite-mapping technologies, and an aerial photography program in Jordan, researchers are discovering more of them than ever before. They number well into the thousands.
Referred to by archaeologists as “wheels,” these stone structures have a wide variety of designs, with a common one being a circle with spokes radiating inside. Researchers believe that they date back to antiquity, at least 2,000 years ago. They are often found on lava fields and range from 82 feet to 230 feet (25 meters to 70 meters) across.
“In Jordan alone we’ve got stone-built structures that are far more numerous than (the) Nazca Lines, far more extensive in the area that they cover, and far older,” said David Kennedy, a professor of classics and ancient history at the University of Western Australia.
Kennedy’s new research, which will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science, reveals that these wheels form part of a variety of stone landscapes. These include kites (stone structures used for funnelling and killing animals); pendants (lines of stone cairns that run from burials); and walls, mysterious structures that meander across the landscape for up to several hundred feet and have no apparent practical use.
His team’s studies are part of a long-term aerial reconnaissance project that is looking at archaeological sites across Jordan. As of now, Kennedy and his colleagues are puzzled as to what the structures may have been used for or what meaning they held.

Nabro is an Eritrean volcano with NO historic eruption record
UPDATE 14/09 – 10:16 UTC :
OGA, the Djibouti Seismological Agency reports renewed seismic activity below the Nabro volcano. Seismic activity does not mean necessarily that the volcano will erupt again (we see nothing unusual – nor visual or infrared).
The picture below shows the tremors which occurred between September 9 and September 11.
3 of the 4 quakes are too deep to be related to an eventual upcoming eruption.
The seismic activity continued now and then since the volcano calmed down several weeks ago.
The magnitude 4.3 struck below the volcano on the 10th of September.
2011-09-11 18:53:39 3.1 Eritrea – depth 600 meter
2011-09-10 20:05:48 4.3 Eritrea – depth 5.3 km
2011-09-10 06:29:35 2.7 Eritrea – depth 10.72 km

On September 13, 2011 at 09:29:28 AM a weak tremor of 2.6 magnitude occurred below the crater of Mt Rainier, the Washington volcano.
This does not mean at all that the volcano will erupt, but this tremor below the crater is one of the strongest since many months. Activity is centered below sea level below the crater (+5,000 meter below the summit
Update : the magnitude and depth has been changed by USGS to 2.4 @ a depth of 1 km (0.6 miles)
Todays tremor is by far the biggest since many months.
Typically, up to five earthquakes are recorded monthly near the summit. Swarms of five to ten shallow earthquakes over two or three days take place from time to time, predominantly in the region of 4 km below the summit (near sea level), and are thought to be caused by the circulation of hot fluids beneath Mount Rainier.
Seismic swarms (not initiated with a mainshock) are common features at volcanoes, and are rarely associated with eruptive activity.

Al Gore take your Global Warming to another planet you scammer
| Published on September 13, 2011 12:00 am PT – By Kevin Martin – Senior Meteorologist – Article Editor and Approved – Ron Jackson |

(TheWeatherSpace.com) — Al Gore is yet again planning on pushing the agenda for his theory on global warming with a 24 hour event on September 15th through 16th. Gore states that we are killing the planet, making it warmer.
As a meteorologist this is absurd and quite honestly the most irresponsible non-thought of theory I’ve ever seen and I’ve been following this for years. Al Gore is in it for business and money and nothing else.
Humans in business do not just push the agenda to help the cause. When will people that follow him realize that he pushes it for a cause, and the planet is not it….
Al Gore says we are killing the planet yet records have shown a warming period over 300 years ago. I do not believe the car was invented, nor factories for that matter!
The planet goes through cycles. We live on average of about 70 years, some living shorter and longer than others. However because we do not live 1000 years we cannot see the evolution of the planet’s natural cycles.
We are not the cause of this “global warming”, Al Gore’s pockets for power and money is. Al Gore cares nothing about you, or I, or anyone else for that matter. Al Gore is a businessman and cares only for what he can take from you.
Carbon Tax was the last straw with me. His companies and investments would make billions if it ever went through. Taxing you for air? Who the heck does this guy think he is? I for one would never allow it and I hope the American people reading this finally understand who Al Gore really is. Nothing more than a liar, a cheat, and a scammer..
While other networks are afraid to put out the truth in fear, I am not. Never be afraid to speak the facts staring at us in the face.
The point of this article is not to slam Al Gore for his “theory” … but to show you that Carbon Tax is absurb and you should not stand for it. I am up for theories and differed opinions but I am not up for someone scamming the world just so he can benefit off it.

Ferry routes have been cancelled and more travel disruptions on roads and rail are expected as Britain is battered by the worst storm in 15 years.
The remnants of Hurricane Katia have crossed the Atlantic and hit Britain’s coastline with winds of up to 80mph and heavy rain, leading forecasters to put out urgent weather alerts.
Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North East, North West and parts of the Midlands and Wales will be affected as the storm prepares to make its way eastwards.
Battered: A large wave hits the sea front at Clevedon, Somerset, today as the tail end of Hurricane Katia struck the UK’s coastline
the Environment Agency has also issued several flood alerts for inland and coastal areas.
Increasing wind speeds as the hurricane approached forced the cancellation of high speed ferries to France from Portsmouth.
Brittany Ferries said it was scrapping its high speed ferries on two crossings scheduled from Portsmouth to Cherbourg today.
