Earthquake – Java Coast

Very Strong (damaging) earthquake along the Java coast, Indonesia

Last update: January 25, 2014 at 3:51 pm by By Armand Vervaeck

Update 15:30 UTC: Until now there are no reports of casualties. Meanwhile,  small aftershocks were felt in the region.

A mosque collapsed in the village of Kranggan

A mosque collapsed in the village of Kranggan

Update: Based on preliminary data report of  “Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana” – BNPB (“National Disaster Management Agency”), two mosques and 45 homes are damaged. Among the most affected cities we mention: Purworedjo, Banyumas, Kebumen, Cilacap, Magelang and Yogyakarta.

Update 07:38 UTC: A mosque in the village of Kranggan collapsed, damaging one neighbour building, No casualities there. Some more houses in Kranggan suffered some damage.

Update 07:26 UTC: Damage is now reported from various parts of south-central Java. One house in Purworedjo collapsed and others were damaged. Little damage, mainly cracked walls, is visible in parts of Yogyakarta. Rockfalls were observed in the hills around the town Kebumen, and in Tasikmalaya (western Java) the quake destroyed many windows. In many parts the people ran out of their houses in panic. Luckily there are no injuries so far.

Update : we do not expect serious damage out of this earthquake because of the distance and the depth of the hypocenter. The depth of the hypocenter is the reason that millions of Indonesians may have felt this earthquake.

Northeastern China Double Earthquake

Strong and very dangerous double earthquake in Changlin, Jilin / Nei-Mongol, China – Lots of damage

Last update: November 23, 2013 at 11:17 am by By

Update 11:19 UTC : Jilin Military immediately launched an emergency mechanism and organized more than 300 active duty, reserve militia and police officers into the emergency disaster relief. Fog, snow and temperatures down to -10 C are adding the to damage.

Update 09:44 UTC : 310 rooms collapsed, 16000 were severely damaged and  20000 with minor damage. No injuries or fatalities has been reported so far which is great as the strongest one happened during the nightly hours.

Update 09:24 UTC : The earthquake sequences are that damaging that a national disaster emergency response grade Ⅳ has been called !

Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 10.33.41

Update 01:31 UTC : The first reports from Songyuan City are mentioning some severely damaged houses in the epicenter area. The assessments from specialized teams (Chinese authorities are very experienced and quick rescue operations) are expected the coming hours.

Update 01:27 UTC : In China this earthquake is described as Songyuan City, Changchun, Jilin earthquake

Update 01:23 UTC : On the pictures below which are from the earthquake area (if the sources are right), one can see a) an aerial view of the landscape showing a lot of agriculture fields and suggesting a flat soft surface which is very vulnerable for earthquake waves. On other images (not shown) we have noticed oil pumps suggesting oil is being extracted in the area. We do NOT suggest however that the oil extraction has something to do with this earthquake.

Update 01:16 UTC : The whole area is unstable since also a double earthquake did strike on October 31. the magnitudes at that time were reported as 5.5 and 5.0, versus 5.3, 5.8 and 5.0 today.

Update 01:11 UTC : Adding to the misery will be snow coming soon

Update 01:09 UTC : Xinhua China early reports mention :  The epicenter was located at the juncture of Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County and Qian’an county, where two quakes of similar magnitude occurred on Oct. 31 and left 12 people injured. “The earthquake lasted for about 3 seconds. I felt it was more severe than the last time, and my house was partly damaged,” Li Wei, a resident in Yingtu Village of Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County, told Xinhua over the phone.
Li said his fellow villagers ran out of their homes for fear that their houses would collapse.

Update 00:56 UTC : The Chinese seismological Agency reports a Magnitude of 5.8 at a depth of only 9 km = very dangerous and collapsed rooms /houses can be expected

Very dangerous double earthquake in the greater Changlin area, China. These twin earthquakes happened after a similar 5+ earthquake yesterday (local time – today UTC). Based on the USGS data, an intensity of MMI VII is expected. This MMI will lead to further damage at houses and infrastructure.
The earthquake was very shallow based on the same USGS data.

Extreme Earthquake – Pakistan

Massive earthquake in Pakistan – At least 50 killed and 100′s injured

Last update: September 24, 2013 at 2:47 pm by By

Update 14:46 UTC : Normally well informed Iranian sources are now reporting an increased death toll of 50. More people remain below the debris which means that the death toll will climb further the coming hours.

Update 14:41 UTC : On the Gwadar coastline, the quake created a small island about half a mile into the sea near an area called ‘Jhanda’, according to Express News. The newly appearing island is said to have a mountainous terrain rising up to a hundred feet. A large crowd was seen gathering at the site to see the new island. This information has been given by normally well informed press sources however ER finds it hard to believe and looks for further confirmation.

Update 14:24 UTC : Around 30% of houses possibly destroyed in the worst parts of Arawan district.

Update 14:20 UTC : We expect the fatalities and injured number still to rise sharply. Our own estimates are better than scenarios of other theoretical engines. Part of the reason is the time of the day the earthquake occurred. We are estimating less than 1000 fatalities based on the current epicenter, Magnitude and depth data.

Update 14:16 UTC : A M5.5 aftershock will probably create more damage and will be possibly life threatening for those buried under the rubble of the collapsed houses. All people who got safely out of their houses will surely not enter them anymore for some time.

Around 200000 people are without power and are in the worst affected epicentral area. This is around 45 times less than the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.

32 dead and 54 injured. Balochistan has imposed emergency measures. We are still waiting for confirmation of these figures.

Screen Shot 2013-09-24 at 16.06.15

Balochistan earthquake (Courtesy: The Tribe)

30 dead and 54 injured. Balochistan has imposed emergency measures.

The weather will be around 22 degrees at night, to 35 degrees in the day for the coming week with no rain. Shelter will need to be provided accordingly as well as water supplies.

Many injuries are confirmed.

Around 400 fatalities are expected using theoretical studies and the current USGS shakemap. There still exist huge uncertainties of course.

Nearly 100% of buildings are adobe in this region according to Maqsood and Schwarz (2008). In their mean vulnerability index – this region came up one of the highest in Pakistan. Thus, it can be said that the vulnerability of such housing is high.

A lot of damage has occurred in the Khuzdar district in the Arawan area

The economic losses will be less than $1 billion USD. It is likely they will be around $100 million USD, however further modelling will be done in the coming hours.

Still at 10 fatalities.

Another M5.8 aftershock has struck the area .

The sparse population (about 50 times less populated than that of the epicentral region in Kashmir 2005) and time of day (4.30pm local time), will have reduced casualties significantly. 10 people however are reported dead currently.

It should be remembered that this is a rural area and thus the population is sparse. Given the length of the fault break, it is likely that Arawan district was quite heavily hit. .

Mw7.7 and 20km depth has been reported from USGS..

Update:- As a yardstick – the Pakistan earthquake of 2005 was Mw7.6 and at 10km depth. The fault break for Mw7.8 should be of the order of 150-180km long using scaling laws..

Update:- The duration of the quake was close to 2 minutes .

Update:- At least 2 people have been killed.

Update:- Many houses have collapsed, and no power is reported in parts of Balochistan. It is unknown the extent of these collapsed houses.

Update:- M7.8 and 15km depth has been given by IIEES.

Update:- The maximum intensity in Karachi has been around III so it is highly unlikely that there will be any damage there.

Update:- A number of aftershocks have occurred which is making life difficult for inhabitants. An M5.9 and M4.7 earthquake have been the largest so far, however it can be expected that aftershocks will plague the region in the coming hours and days.

No damage has been reported in Iran. Dubai in the UAE reported swinging of buildings.

Update: PAGER is predicting in excess of 1000 fatalities using a theoretical model. Internal models are predicting less than 1000 fatalities, (around 440) but with huge differences currently due to the uncertainty of intensities (and differences in magnitude)

Update: The earthquake occurred at 16:30 local time, which is one of the best times for an earthquake to strike… many people will hopefully been out of the house and out of schools, and agricultural workers will still hopefully have been outside.

Update: Roofs of schools in Arawan district collapsed.

Update: Pakistani news report that a lot of houses were damaged in Arawan area. Many people were injured and are on the way to hospital.

Update: Reports from Pakistan indicate that a lot of houses in western Pakistan were damaged. We expect more damage, also in other parts of Pakistan.

Update: USGS rose the Magnitude to 7.8 again. The quake was also felt in UAE and Oman. So far, we don’t have any reports from greater epicenter area.

Update: Panic was spreaded in Dehli and other Indian cities. People ran to the streets.

Update: According to PAGER, 16.000 people living in the area of strongest shaking.  105.000 in area of Intensity VII and VIII.

Update: USGS has changed the value from M 7.8 to M 7.4, still very dangerous. The quake was also felt in parts of India.
USGS ShakeMap shows a violent shaking in epicenter area, which is only sparsely populted with some villages (Balochistan Region).

A massive very dangerous earthquake with M 7.5  occurred in southern Pakistan.

Very Strong earthquake out of the Piura coast in Northern Peru

Last update: August 12, 2013 at 10:36 am by By

Update 10:34 UTC : IGP Peru reports the following intensities, in line with other agencies :
MMI IV (light shaking) at Paita
MMI III-II (weak to very weak shaking) at Talara and Sullana

Update 10:25 UTC : based on the current (preliminary) data, earthquake-report.com expects this earthquake to be harmless but small damage like cracks in walls, fallen tiles etc are always possible.

The earthquake who occurred far enough out of the coast to be harmless for the coastal area has been reported with a (theoretical) max. light shaking on the coast. Minxian, Gansu, CHina Deadly Quake

Deadly earthquake near Minxian, Gansu, China – at least 95 killed and +1000 injured – Update July 24

Last update: July 24, 2013 at 2:22 pm by By

Update : the expected shaking at some Chinese cities based on the data from USGS (M5.9). Chinese have M6.6 but deeper than USGS which may after all have the same intensity.

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 02.36.57

Update : The Chinese seismological authority has reported a M6.6 at a depth of 20 km, an even grimmer perspective than the M5.9 from USGS on which the data below have been calculated. There is no reason not to believe the data from the Chinese as they are highly specialized in earthquakes.

Update : USGS expects a very strong MMI VII shaking for approx. 19,000 people, a strong shaking for 150,000 people and a moderate shaking for 379,000 people.

Update 13:46 UTC : Good and important news from the earthquake region. The ministry of transportation has ended all repair work at the National and Provincial roads in the earthquake region. This will enable relief and rescue trucks to transport the necessary equipment closer to the epicenter area.

Update 12:51 UTC : Something ER just learned now in reading the earthquake responsive : Veterinary emergency task group that works closely together with the Ministry of agriculture to assess asap all animal related topics, like prevent dead animals becoming sources sickness, getting abandoned animals to their owner, helping farmers manage their stock. This service is extremely important in rural areas where animals are often the only wealth of the owner. The teams include also veterinarians.

Update 12:15 UTC : Just like it happened in the Sichuan earthquake a couple of months ago, the Central Disaster Management team has taken over the lead in the rescue and relief efforts. Premier Li Keqying will overview personally every effort going on for rescue and relief. Earthquakes in China are divided into different categories. Some do only need local county response, others Province and the very big ones are managed by the Central Government.
An earthquake which is managed buy the Central Bejing Government has all possible power to engage whatever means possible. Army, police even temporarily allocation of civilian aircraft lies in their power.
We can make sure to our readers that this response is by far the most efficient in the world. Will it be perfect ? Never, but since we cover almost every earthquake in the world who needs assistance, we know what we are talking about. Congratulations to the Chinese response teams.

Update 11:19 UTC : A video from a China News channel with a reporter in the earthquake damaged areas (can be slow to load)

Important Update 10:22 UTC :
Sad to report that the victim numbers are increasing by the hour (these are all “at least” numbers):
– 75 people are now confirmed as being killed
– 14 have been recorded as missing
– 584 people are being treated for all kinds of injuries
– Chinese seismologists have said that the shaking intensity near the epicenter must have been VIII or “severe shaking”

Update 10:30 UTC : The experts of the China Earthquake Network have given more details about the technicalities behind the quake. They speak about the influence of stronger earthquakes the last 10 years on the faults that triggered this earthquake. The fault is likely a North South direction fault. Ano no major earthquake happened in this area since 1900 (see also our bottom map), stress has accumulated and has been released now. Perfectly normal are telling the scientists. 405 aftershocks so far, some of them +5. They expect this to go on for at least a week with +5 still possible. For that reason they ask people to be super-careful and not to live in damaged houses. For those camping in the open, they ask people to be careful and look at the terrain at all sides, mainly to avoid secondary geological elements like landslides, flash floods, etc.

Update 10:15 UTC : To imagine better the destruction the earthquake has inflicted, the picture below.
At least 14 people are still missing.

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 12.18.06

Update 10:00 UTCWeather during and immediately after an earthquake is incredibly important both for the chance on landslides and the way rescue has to be organized and relief goods to be distributed.  Bernhard Mühr from KIT Karlsruhe has made a short study on what to expect in the earthquake area until the end of July. The conclusion of this in-depth weather forecast : very good considering the monsoon period.

There is a strong gradient in precipitation from Lantschau southward. The districts hit by the earthquake, Minxian and Zhangxian, expect significantly more rain than Lantschau. The  monthly rain amounts during the summer months are about twice as much (~100-150 mm).
The districts in many places have rugged terrain, narrow valleys are located between mountain ranges that rise to more than 3000 meters.
Monsoon rains often are associated with thunderstorms and are of great intensity. These downpours frequently lead to sudden rise of river levels, flooding and might trigger landslides.

Rain forecast
The latest GFS-model run (July 22, 2013, 00 UTC) doesn’t show much rain for the next 8 days in the affected area. Widespread and large rain amounts are not to be expected. However, in unstable monsoon airmasses localized rain areas and thunderstorms might occur any time.  Their intensity can be large and thus cause problems with river levels and landslides at places.

Update 09:34 UTC : The number of injured persons has increased to 462 (from 412)
As we have expected it fropm almost immediately after the earthquake hit, landslides have also been triggered. At least 10 houses have been buried in Meixian, Minxian county.

Update 08:51 UTC : Chinese are far better pupils if it comes to earthquake preparedness than most other countries in the world. One example : once out of the building, most people evacuate to the middle of the street or in open places.

Update 08:47 UTC : A picture we will see more and more in the future. Death toll will decrease considerably in the future due to earthquake resistant (new) houses and apartment buildings. The villages in the rural areas do not have the money to build this way and people are in great majority still living in very old primitive houses. Conclusion : less and less fatalities in (modern) cities and only a fraction less in rural areas.
