Panama Earthquake 12/08

Very strong dangerous earthquake near the coast of Panama (David)

Last update: December 8, 2014 at 7:18 pm by By

Update 18:57 UTC : Many aftershocks since today’s mainshock. The latest one being a M5.2 (see also seismogram below)

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 19.56.00

Update 17:28 UTC : At the time of writing this update we are happy to report that we could not find any damage

Update 09:55 UTC : USGS has decreased the Magnitude from M6.7 to M6.6, depth 18 km Epicenter (luckily) offshore.

Update 09:46 UTC : We like to bring good news too – No electricity outages are being reported, a good sign!

Update 09:35 UTC : The BURICA (peninsula) area might be the hardest hit during this earthquake as a very strong MMI VII shaking is expected there.  Below the expected shaking following the USGS agency.

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 10.41.41 Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 10.41.49

Update 09:35 UTC : Costa Rica authorities are mentioning a maximum shaking of MMI IV = light shaking = probably no damage. Costa Rica seismological agency is reporting a far weaker Magnitude of 6.1 vs M6.7 by USGS

Update 09:34 UTC : The David Fire Department is currently assessing the situation and is looking for eventual damage. We will report if anything is being found.

Update 09:16 UTC : Below the USGS shaking map. Max. expected shaking in the coastal towns MMI VI = strong shaking

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 10.21.42

Update 09:16 UTC : GEOFON automatic Focal Mechanism is showing a compression (thrust) type earthquake which means the the main movement will be vertical. The most dangerous earthquakes are lateral movement earthquakes which are called Transform Type earthquakes. The subduction type will weaken the damage outlook considerably.

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 10.19.09

Update 09:13 UTC : ER is almost certain that this earthquake will be damaging. The extend of the damage will depend on the earthquake type. It will take another 10 minutes before we are sure about that. We expect the David Panama district to be the hardest hit. Also the coastal area of Costa Rica may get his part of the slight damage.

Update 09:09 UTC : Although local tsunami waves are possible, the PWTC indicates that a Pacific Ocean and US West Coast tsunami is not likely. No alert has been issued for these areas. PWTC text : BASED ON EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION AND HISTORIC TSUNAMI RECORDS    THE EARTHQUAKE WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO GENERATE A TSUNAMI.

Update 09:07 UTC : Today’s earthquake is a lot stronger than the M6.0 earthquake from yesterday.

Last update: September 17, 2014 at 9:13 am by By

Update 08:45 UTC: Only light damage as broken glass, falling shelves and unsecured objects or damaged transformers reported.  No important damage or injuries currently.Update 08:40 UTC: Power is reported out at Mount Santa Rosa, Yigo and also in Dandan area were crews are working to safely fix a line as a result of the earthquake. In southern villages power has been mostly restored.

Update 08:25 UTC: A landslide was reported in East Agama, Uttam. Guam Police Department and Department of Public Works have been dispatched to follow up on the situation.

Update 07:27 UTC: The earthquake was downgraded to Magnitude 6.7. This makes it less dangerous.

Update 07:11 UTC: Pacific Daily News is reporting power outages from Talofofo to Malojloj and down to Bear Rock in Inarajan.
– Some residents have reported losing phone service after the quake.

Update 06:37 UTC
As reported by our readers, the USGS ShakeMap gives a strong intensity for the whole island. This can cause moderate damage to buildings. So far, no reports indicate any damage or destruction.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred only a few km north of Guam, according to preliminary USGS data. The hypocenter was located in a depth of approx. 130 km. This makes the earthquake less dangerous and reduces the chance for a tsunami. NO warnung was issued, althouth small, non-destructive waves along the coast of Guam can not be excluded.

The shaking of the earthquake was felt very strongly on Guam, according to reports we received.

Update : Due to the deep hypocenter, this earthquake will have been felt by millions of people who, if the data are right, will all of them have felt a weak or max. light shaking

Update : ER does not expect damage because of this earthquake. 2 main reasons for this : a) a deep hypocenter which means that strong shaking waves will  be weaker when they arrive at the surface and b) the epicenter below the sea floor (below land is always more dangerous)

Earthquake Between Puerto Rico & Dominican Republic

Strong deep earthquake close to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Last update: May 29, 2014 at 1:22 pm by By

Update May 29 13:19 UTC : Local reports are mentioning houses with cracks in Salva León de Higuey

Update 22:24 UTC : List of the most recent earthquakes closest to today’s epicenter. Interesting to see is that almost all of these earthquakes are very deep, this due to the movement of the Oceanic plate towards the south (she dives below the Caribbean plate).  The tectonics of this Caribbean area are very complex with a number of sub-plates as well as dangerous transform faults, like the one who generated the cruel Haiti earthquake. Transform faults are resulting in a mainly horizontal movement which can generate a lot of damage to not properly build houses.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 00.40.04

Update 22:24 UTC : Below the seismogram of this earthquake as recorded in Presa de Sabenta, Dominican Republic

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 00.17.08

Update 21:57 UTC : The main reason why this earthquake was felt in such a wide radius (Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic) is the depth of the hypocenter or breaking point. Although the radius is very wide, the concentrated shaking at the epicenter is luckily also a lot weaker. When this earthquake would have been shallower the risk on serious damage would have been a lot bigger.

Update 21:46 UTC  : USGS has increased the Magnitude again to M5.8 at the same depth. Below the shaking intensities for the most important cities close to the epicenter.

Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 23.39.01 Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 23.39.10

Update 21:39 UTC : USGS has recalculated the Magnitude and has set it now to M5.7 at a depth of 91 km. USGS projects a max. Moderate shaking in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic and a weak shaking in Puerto Rico.

Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 23.33.51

Update 21:35 UTC : The earthquake will surely NOT generate a tsunami.

Update 21:32 UTC : The preliminary earthquake Magnitude values are in between 5.3 and 5.8 at a depth of 100 km. This means that there is only a limited chance on serious damage. The deeper the hypocenter is, the less chance on damage.

Moderate earthquake at intermediate depth near Tokyo, Japan

Last update: May 13, 2014 at 12:44 am by By

Update 00:13 UTC : In 1923 a M7.9 earthquake struck at a depth of 35 km to the south west of the current epicenter. This earthquake killed 142,000 people. In other words this is a highly dangerous area.

Update 00:07 UTC : The hypocenter depth can be called normal as the heavier Oceanic Pacific plate dives below Honshu, Japan (see image below).Screen Shot 2014-05-04 at 23.30.57

Update 00:01 UTC :  Question from ER for the people living in Tokyo who have felt the earthquake and having a Earthquake Warning App or alert – How much time was there in between the alert and the shaking? Thanks for replying with the form below.

Blue bullets - earthquakes at intermediate depth - Green : even deeper

Update 23:51 UTC : JMA Japan reports a Magnitude of M4.9 at a depth of 80 km. Max. shaking intensity is JMA 4
JMA 4 means : * Most people are startled.
* Hanging objects such as lamps swing significantly.
* Unstable ornaments may fall.
Based on all these data we can conclude that this earthquake will be harmless.
The earthquake happened at 08:35 local time.

The Overall Color-Scope 5/3-15

May 4-15:   The theme of these days is Unchartered Waters. Things have shifted so that everything is new. There are no maps, so proceed based upon your inner knowing and the wisdom of the heart’s connection to the Universe.

Overall Color for these Days:   Fibrous White

This is a time for knowing the difference between Have-to-Do and Want-to-Do. You are in a place now where certain decision are waiting to be made and they turn upon your knowing the difference between these two things One is the old way; the other is the new way. Which will you choose? There is neither right nor wrong here. There will be times in your future to work again with this concept, however it might be a bit more difficult. Ask yourself whether there is there a melding of the two. Perhaps, however you must reconcile these within yore own soul. The melding is part of the morphing, the changing from then to NOW. Things take time within this dimension, and we are aware of that. There is no strict timeline here. These things are hinted at to point to what is available to you and let you know that should you wish, they are there for you Now. These days will bring many issues up before you. You will be seeing things in a new light, and you will actually feel your perspective shifting. You can go from one choice to another even within minutes. As this happens, it is good to be with the one choice then the other to see them for how they fit WHO you are. There is much to be known right now about your self. Be gentle with yourself these days. Take time. Do not rush. Leave worry behind. When it arises just accept the fact that it is there for you to get embroiled in should you choose, but if you choose not to, then breathe, breathe in light, know you are light, and know that everything will work out. These are difficult times, but you have the power, the strength, and the knowing to move forward. And know that there is always guidance for you should you ask. If you are confused by the signals that come your way, then go within and feel what is right. Feel what harmonizes with WHO you are, and you will know.

On the larger scale, expect to see and hear more reports of sightings of ET crafts. There is a great deal of worry within the communities of the Universe as to where the Blue Planet is going right now. They are cooperating with Gaia and will continue to monitor the conditions here. They will not take any direct action unless they are asked by the Planet herself to do so. Politics will be confused and confusing as politicians say one thing and contradict themselves in the same sentence. There is much uproar going on right now within the political world in all countries. New alliances are forming, some of them under the surface. People are becoming more vocal and are seeing through the sham that has been presented to them as freedom and fact. Truly, as The Many has said, this is a time for the Individual. People are recognizing kindred spirits, some in individuals that formerly they would have nothing to do with. Communities of spirits and like-minded are arising. Then there are those you will see in these days who are turning away from it all, with their fingers in their ears, refusing to accept that change is happening, and not the kind the politicians were speaking of. This is a change that is fueled by the true desires of the people that is based upon real knowing and compassion. Things are getting rocky, and will get rockier, but it is all part of creating something new. There will be more Earth movements and shifts. The current in the Earth that has been reworking and rechanneling itself will begin to be seen as tornadoes, volcanoes, and quakes shake things up. There are winds that will come out of nowhere, whirling at hurricane force in places that are not used to such things. There will be a lull in the high areas of the world, but then things will quickly progress to weather patterns that are out of season. More landslides can occur as the earth shifts and moves. There is a momentum within the events of man that is being stirred up through the Gaia connection. You will be seeing more of this during these days.

Earthquake – Santa Cruz Islands Area

Very Strong earthquake – Santa Cruz Islands Region on April 18, 2014

Another Earthquake in Nicaragua

Very strong but this time DEEP earthquake (not an aftershock) in Nicaragua

Last update: April 11, 2014 at 10:19 pm by By

Update 22:17 UTC: The mayor of Nagarote says 6 homes collapsed due to this quake.

Update 22:05 UTC: Live TV from the area shows a lot of superficial damage done by both quakes (yesterday’s and today’s)

Update 21:57 UTC: Radio Nicaragua is reporting 2 collapsed homes.

Update 21:41 UTC : A new aftershock just happened but people felt it as weaker than the mainshock we are discussing on this page.

Update 21:24 UTC : damage is being reported in the National University of Engineering in Managua
– The Cathedral of Managua was slightly damaged
– Nicaragua seismological agency reported that the depth of the earthquake was 101 km, 1/3th less than the other reporting international agencies. Thius shallower depth can explain the additional damage, even with a deep earthquake.

Update : More broken water pipes are reported in Managua, Nicaragua

Update : a landslide is reported at the Xiloa volcanic lagoon (source RT)

This earthquake is not to be called an aftershock of the M6.1 earthquake who happened on April 10.
Compared to the 6.1 earthquake who was extremely shallow, this one is a normal subduction earthquake which should normally be called harmless. After the M6.1 however, this earthquake can also generate some additional damage

Georgia Earthquake

Moderate earthquake in Georgia / South Carolina, USA – some slight damage expected / reported

Last update: February 15, 2014 at 6:00 am by By

Why earthquakes in this area of the United States ?
Earthquakes in the Inland Carolinas Region
Since at least 1776, people living inland in North and South Carolina, and in adjacent parts of Georgia and Tennessee, have felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from infrequent larger ones. The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.
Earthquakes in the central and eastern U.S., although less frequent than in the western U.S., are typically felt over a much broader region. East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S. earthquake usually can be felt as far as 500 km (300 mi) from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 40 km (25 mi).

Screen Shot 2014-02-15 at 06.53.02

Faults
Earthquakes everywhere occur on faults within bedrock, usually miles deep. Most bedrock beneath the inland Carolinas was assembled as continents collided to form a supercontinent about 500-300 million years ago, raising the Appalachian Mountains. Most of the rest of the bedrock formed when the supercontinent rifted apart about 200 million years ago to form what are now the northeastern U.S., the Atlantic Ocean, and Europe.
At well-studied plate boundaries like the San Andreas fault system in California, often scientists can determine the name of the specific fault that is responsible for an earthquake. In contrast, east of the Rocky Mountains this is rarely the case. The inland Carolinas region is far from the nearest plate boundaries, which are in the center of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea. The region is laced with known faults but numerous smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected. Even the known faults are poorly located at earthquake depths. Accordingly, few, if any, earthquakes in the inland Carolinas can be linked to named faults. It is difficult to determine if a known fault is still active and could slip and cause an earthquake. As in most other areas east of the Rockies, the best guide to earthquake hazards in the seismic zone is the earthquakes themselves. (Source USGS)

Update : An Edgefield Water Utility representative said the floor of Edgefield County Hospital may be cracked. No evacuation has been made as of yet. An over flow of the Edgefield Co. water towers was scheduled previously. It has nothing to do with the earthquake.

Update : Residents of High Point, more than 150 miles from the epicenter, reported feeling the earthquake. The tremors were also felt in much of northern Georgia and even in southeastern Tennessee.
