Update 22:49 UTC : The earthquake was well registered at the nearby Pawani GNS Science seismograph.

Screen Shot 2013-07-08 at 00.49.03

Update 22:44 UTC : Hastings police senior sergeant Brian Smith said the quake caused buildings to shake and was the strongest felt in the region in many months.

A moderate M4.9 earthquake at a depth of 64 km (Geonet) was felt all over the North Island and even at some locations on the North of the South Island. The intermediate depth of the hypocenter is the main reason for it being felt that way in such a big radius.
This earthquake is not dangerous and will not generate any damage or injuries.
Geonet New Zealand has received +1000 felt reports – 95% claiming a light shaking

Nepal Large Earthquake

Dangerous earthquake in Rukum, Nepal injures 20, damages 14 houses

Last update: June 28, 2013 at 3:15 pm by By

Update 15:10 UTC : At least 20 people are reported to be injured in earthquake in Rukum, Nepal. Earthquake has damaged more than 14 houses in Rukum. Still have to wait for tomorrow morning for details. People rushed out of their houses in Salyan, Jajarkot, Rolpa and other neighboring districts.

Update 13:28 UTC
: We have just added the data of the Nepal National Seismological Center to the list. NSC has reported a Richter Magnitude ML 5.5. They are never disclosing the depth, at least not online. A same difference in data was seen at the earlier Rukum earthquakes. ER keeps his denomination as “dangerous”.

Update 12:59 UTC : Light to weak shaking has been reported from Dailekh, Pokhara, Birendranagar and Tulsipur

Update 12:33 UTC : On March 24 a similar, although a little weaker, earthquake struck the same area. Some prople had to be treated for minor injuries + a number of houses were damaged and others collapsed. Check our in-depth article about this earthquake here.

Update 12:30 UTC : the earthquake was well felt in Kathmandu as well as in Pokhara. We do not expect damage outside the perimeter we have referred to below.

Update 12:25 UTC : It will take many hours before we will be getting news from the epicenter area. We consider a radius of 20 km around the epicenter as a potentially dangerous landslide area

We do not immediately fear shaking damage from this earthquake, but we do fear dangerous landslides as the monsoon has began his yearly work in the Himalayas

Different epicenters are being reported by the most important seismological agencies.

Iran Earthquake – 6/21

Moderate earthquake in northern Iran (100 km from Tehran) generates minor damage (June 21, 2013)

Last update: June 21, 2013 at 9:28 am by By

The local Iranian press reports that ONLY … minor damage was inflected during this earthquake. As examples they are stating cracks in houses, fallen objects etc.  The damage was generated in the Firoozkooh area.
This earthquake shows one more time that even, what we consider as weak, earthquakes can generate damage in Iran. ISC reports Mn3.9 at a depth of 8 km. This earthquake occurred relatively close to Teheran (100 km). Teheran is one of the world capitals who have a very high risk of a major deadly earthquake

Australia Earthquake

Very Strong earthquake in a nearly unpopulated region of Australia

Last update: June 9, 2013 at 3:35 pm by By

Update : The earthquake was reasonably close to Yulara (about 100 km) – which had damage through an earthquake in 1989.

Update : These earthquakes are not uncommon in Northern Territory and South Australia with a similar earthquake occurring last year. Click here for more information about historic damaging quakes in Australia (CATDAT).

Update : USGS expects a very strong shaking close to the epicenter as a result of the very shallow depth of only 3,9 km. Luckily, there is no settlement with more than 1000 inhabitants.

A very strong earthquake with Magnitude 5.6 occured in the desert region near the border of South Australia and Northern Territory. This area is nearly unpopulated, so we do not expect any larger damage from this quake.

Earthquake – Phillipines

Strong very dangerous earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines (near Kabacan, Carmen, Libungan, President Roxas and Midsayap)

Last update: June 1, 2013 at 4:26 pm by By

Update 15:54 UTC : We get gradually a better view on what is happening as we have received a number of reports from Kabacan which is less than 30 km from the epicenter. these reports are confirming the strong expected shaking + also the many aftershocks (at least 10).
Kabacan Experience reports :
– still experiencing very strong aftershocks. almost 10 aftershocks already (Very Strong shaking indicated)
– in only split of seconds, earthquake for 3x (strong shaking indicated)
– Lasted for less than a minute (Very Strong shaking indicated)
– Both swinging and bouncing motion (Very Strong shaking indicated)
In Libungan, a location 35 km west of the epicenter, the power was out shortly
– I opened the door, got out of the house. Very strong,  even our dogs panicked. its 10:28pm on our clock, followed by slight shaking at around 10:55pm .we are viewing PGT but power was off for few minutes.
– Cannot avoid panicking as I was so afraid.
Another location with rather high Shaking values is Midsayap :
– my family was so afraid it is very strong earthquake i easily carry my grand ma because of too nervous all i want is to escaped inside the house carrying my lola a very impressive adrenalin rush
– Strong shaking, swaying of framed pictures on wall.., really caused fear among us.
– I’m worried for our house is not concrete. We’re not able to stand and look for safest place.
– So afraid. It was a sudden shake but really strong.
– it was a strong earthquake, i and my kids seek refuge at the lawn where it is open and the safest place for us.

Update 15:54 UTC : The earthquake occurred at 22h local time. At this time a day, more people are at home and therefore more vulnerable to collapsing residential buildings.
Landslides: The maximum slope in the area of the earthquake is 49.865% and the maximum altitude is 2804 m. Since this is a medium slope, the risk of earthquake induced landslides is medium.
There are no Hydrodams in the greater epicenter area (gdacs data)

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 17.53.37

Update 15:31 UTC : No information yet from the epicenter area. The earthquake occurred at 22:10 local time, which means probably in the dark. Normally it takes a few hours before Civil Defense reports are starting to come in.

Update 15:16 UTC : Preliminary Focal Mechanism as reported by CPPGeophysics

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 17.20.47

Update 15:16 UTC : Carmen is a 1st class municipality in the province of Cotabato, Philippines. According LGPMS (as of 2009), it has a population of 65,670 people in 13,325 households. (source Wikipedia)

Update 15:12 UTC : GDACS reports the following locations close with their distance to the epicenter : The earthquake happened 87km from Davao. The nearest populated places are: Wangay (17km), Mlang (16km), Imbuc Rancheria (18km), Kayaga (12km), Lamiaon (18km), Kinudal (7km), Linao (15km), Carman (5km), Miuban (19km), Tubac (17km), Manarapan (7km), Simoney (6km), Kibudtungan (12km), Datu Santilla (17km), Liliongan (18km). The closest civilian airport is Awang (70km).

Update 15:15 UTC : So far, we have not received any I Have Felt It reports from the direct epicenter area (President Roxas or Carmen).

Update 15:12 UTC : The USGS picture below shows scary data – A MMI VII (very strong) shaking is expected to be felt by 110,000 people !

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 17.12.26

Update 14:54 UTC : The Phivolcs epicenter map below shows the main faults cris-crossing the many islands but surprisingly not a main fault near the epicenter of today’s earthquake

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 16.54.55

Update 14:54 UTC : Phivolcs Philippines is just like us expecting damage as well as aftershocks.
The shaking intensities as reported by Phivolcs are as follows (at ER we think that the shaking will be stronger, more like USGS predicts):
Intensity IV – Matalam, North Cotabato
Intensity III – Tacurong City, Marawi City; Kidapawan City; Cotabato City; Cagayan de Oro City
Intensity II – Davao City; Valencia City; Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte
Important : the Phivolcs Shaking values are NOT MMI values but are according their own scale which is as follows :
II : Slightly Felt – Felt by few individuals at rest indoors. Hanging objects swing slightly. Still Water in containers oscillates noticeably.
III : Weak – Felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings. Vibration is felt like one passing of a light truck. Dizziness and nausea are experienced by some people. Hanging objects swing moderately. Still water in containers oscillates moderately.
IV : Moderately Strong – Felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objectsswing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard.

Update 14:44 UTC : We have just changed the title of this page from ‘dangerous into ‘very dangerous. The main reason is the very populated area and new data from local Phivolcs (Philippines seismological agency). they have reported a Magnitude of M5.7 at a extremely shallow depth of 5 km and thats really bad news for an radius of 25 km around the epicenter.

Update 14:41 UTC : The village of Carmen is at only 4 km from the epicenter (USGS data). The shaking lasted from 5 seconds to even a minute like some people reported. If a shaking of 30 seconds to a minute is confirmed, this will be bad news, as the longer the shaking is lasting the more chance there is for damage.

Update 14:35 UTC : The image below (Google Satellite View) is showing an additional reason of fear : A lot of farming fields left of the river and near the USGS epicenter (Which differs a lot from the initial EMSC epicenter). USGS is locating the epicenter very close to Carmen.

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 16.35.28

Update 14:32 UTC : The shaking map below shows why we are calling this earthquake dangerous. An MMI very strong shaking is (theoretically) expected by USGS.

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 16.31.52

Update 14:28 UTC : USGS has reported a depth of 18 km and a Magnitude of M5.6.
President Roxas is a location of 10,000 inhabitants at only 14 km from the epicenter (EMSC epicenter location)

A strong earthquake occurred in the middle of Mindanao.
Earthquake-Report.com calls this earthquake as very dangerous for damage and/or injuries, the main reason being the shallow depth and the chance on landslides.

Strong earthquake in the Caucasus (150 km from Sochi, Russia)

Last update: May 28, 2013 at 8:20 am by By

Update : The same area had very strong earthquakes in 1905 (M6.4) and in 1963 (M6.7). the current earthquake may have the benefit to have released a lot of the culminated stress. The location of the epicenter is close to Dombay, a tourist village with approx. 700 inhabitants. The village is popular with skiers and hikers.

Update : The earthquake and some aftershocks were clearly felt in Sochi, the location of the next Winter Olympics. Some Sochi residents left their homes and spent some time in the open air out of fear for aftershocks. The Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 8 km north of the Lower Arkhyz (Karachay-Cherkessia).

Earthquake – Panama/Costa Rica Border

Strong moderately dangerous earthquake near the Panama / Costa Rica border area

Last update: May 27, 2013 at 4:43 pm by By

Update 16:38 UTC : After searching our many sources we are happy to report that NO damage or injuries have been reported by local press or authorities. If you have signs of the contrary, please let us know by filling in a comment or IHFI report. Thank you.
The most logical reason for a possible harmless outcome will be the depth as reported by Ovsicori Costa Rica (35 km).

Update 11:07 UTC : Ovsicori Costa Rica is reporting a Magnitude of M6 BUT at a depth of 35 km. this depth makes the earthquake still moderately dangerous but less dangerous than the initial USGS data.

Update 10:54 UTC : Most shaking exposed villages / cities in the epicenter area :
MMI VI (strong shaking) : Guabito 6,000 inhabitants, Changuinola 23,000 and Sixaola 2,000
MMI V (Moderate shaking)  : Barranco 1,000 and Almirante 8,000

Screen Shot 2013-05-27 at 12.54.41

Update 10:15 UTC : Falling objects and telephone problems in Costa Rica (nothing abnormal !!). Power outtage in Perez Zeledon

Update 10:09 UTC : The main reason why this earthquake is more dangerous than normal Costa Rica Pacific earthquakes is that the fault type is different (transform vs subduction). Transform faults are more dangerous. The area around town Guabito might be the most dangerous. Many villages, soft soil and probably not the most resistant buildings.
In the direct vicinity of the epicenter are mainly rocky hills and not many villages, but the village of Prucsco is located in a softer soil valley.

A strong earthquake occurred in the middle of the Costa Rica / Panama night at a shallow depth of 12 km (preliminary value). It was well felt in both countries.
This earthquake maybe dangerous as it was strong and shallow.
The earthquake happened on the Atlantic Coast, a rather unusual location for such strong earthquakes.
Earthquake-Report.com calls this earthquake Moderately Dangerous for injuries and damage.
The MMI VII shaking which is expected by the USGS calculations is confirming our expectations.

Very strong dangerous earthquake in south-eastern Uzbekistan

Last update: May 26, 2013 at 1:14 pm by By

Update 12:07 UTC : One person from Bulungur (Uzbekistan) has just written at the EMSC site in russian language, that the shaking was very strong, all the objects fall down, there are big cracks in the walls, a lot of chimneys collapsed, windows are broken, people are afraid to return home. Bulungur is 44 km South from the EMSC epicenter. The local press is however in Sunday rest as the reports from them are very limited.

Update 09:24 UTC : We can bring you an amateur video posted on YouTube from todays earthquake as it was witnessed in Tashkent (200 km from the epicenter)

Update 08:39 UTC : Preliminary Focal Mechanism for this earthquake shows a reverse faulting (2 plates pushing upon another and breaking). No more news at this moment. We continue our search for more details.

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 10.09.44

Update 07:56 UTC : The data update is giving the following changed shaking impact on the population (the VII and VI ares can generate damage / injuries, especially on older buildings) :

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 09.55.59

Update 07:52 UTC : The MMI shaking values for the closest cities are now as following (updated USGS data)
VI   (strong shaking)  Bulung’ur  27000 people
V    (moderate shaking)  Jomboy    14000
IV    (Light shaking)  Daxbet    8000,  Chelak    17000,  Jizzax    153000 and  Samarqand 319000

Update 07:48 UTC : New updated data from USGS are reporting a recalculated Magnitude of 5.8 at a depth of 19 km (instead of 26). The Max. MMI shaking is up now from VI to VII. This is the new shakemap based on the updated data

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 09.50.41

Update 07:38 UTC : Samarkand reports that the cellular network went down, but no damage known as yet. This is good news, and probably means a different hypocenter and magnitude to that being calculated.

Update 07:30 UTC : Although USGS and other Uzbek newspapers are defining this quake as an intensity 5 (V) earthquake, this is not the case, as the depth and magnitude, if correct, will create at least an intensity VII, and possibly worse.

Update 07:28 UTC : In Navoy, picture frames fell, and it was felt around V (this is also 125km from the epicenter). Not good news.

Update 07:24 UTC : Using Tashkent as IV-V, it appears as though the shaking at the epicenter could be around VIII.

Update 07:18 UTC : Data arriving from our readers are telling us that there might be serious damage near the epicenter as this earthquake was well felt in Tashkent and even more in Dushambe , both at 200 km distance from the epicenter

Update 07:10 UTC : A ER reader writing us from Touristic (Historic) City Samarkand (approx. 40 km to the South West) writes us :
Lots of people panicked, cellular network was down and unresponsive for about 15 mins, no damage yet known

Update 07:06 UTC : The village below is at only 2 km from the epicenter as reported by the USGS and is surely at risk for eventual damage. We have no name of it.

Village at only 2 km north-east of the epicenter (USGS epicenter)

Village at only 2 km north-east of the epicenter (USGS epicenter)

Update 06:58 UTC : The settlement of Mardsham-Bulak is right above the epicenter as reported by USGS.

Update 06:58 UTC : What concerns us a little bit is that the epicenter is located below farmland, which means mostly soft soil. Soft soil has the capacity to distribute a more dangerous shaking wave than a rocky underground.

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 08.56.34

Lets hope for the sake of the people living in the epicenter area that USGS is right with his data and expectations.

Update 06:55 UTC : The earthquake was felt as far as Almaty

Update 06:52 UTC : The depths of the epicenter are varying seriously in between the different reporting agencies. 26 km (USGS) – 10 km (also a value as “we are not sure” by EMSC) and 16 km (Geofon)

Update 06:50 UTC : The current earthquake is (luckily) far away from yesterday’s epicenter which was close to Tashkent.

Update 06:45 UTC : We expect at least damage in the settlements around the epicenter, but as far as we get reports at the moment it is still too soon the know where  the exact epicenter is situated. At this moment we conclude away from the bigger cities

Update 06:42 UTC : Maximum shaking as expected by USGS is MMI VI = strong shaking

Update 06:37 UTC : USGS indicates far better numbers than the preliminary data from EMSC and Geofon – A Magnitude of M6.0 at a preliminary depth of 26 km.

Update 06:32 UTC : The main cities at risk are Koytash and Gallaorol.
Jyzzakh, a city with a population of 150,000 people being just out of our dangerous perimeter which we call at this moment at approx. 20 km. As there is still uncertainty about the perimeter this conclusion is still very temporary.
