Philip Hammond: “We know much more about the composition, direction and size of the plume than we did last year”

Flights in Scotland have been cancelled by a regional airline as volcanic ash continues to head towards the UK.

Loganair, based at Glasgow airport, has cancelled 36 flights on Tuesday as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) warns that disruption cannot be ruled out.

Analysts expect the ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano to reach Scotland and Northern Ireland by Monday evening.

The event comes a year after ash from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano spread across Europe, causing huge disruption.

Earthquakes Running Backwards

Scientists Find Odd Twist in Slow ‘Earthquakes’: Tremor Running Backwards

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2011) — Earthquake scientists trying to unravel the mysteries of an unfelt, weeks-long seismic phenomenon called episodic tremor and slip have discovered a strange twist. The tremor can suddenly reverse direction and travel back through areas of the fault that it had ruptured in preceding days, and do so 20 to 40 times faster than the original fault rupture.

Roswell Crash Confirmed?

One of the thousands of documents the FBI placed in its new online site (find out where) reportedly seems to confirm that aliens did land at Roswell, N.M., in 1947. (See where that is.) Conspiracy theorists have said for years that the U.S. government covered up its discovery of this in a field, saying instead it was a weather balloon.

Minus 200 Million…

What If 200 Million People Go Missing on Saturday?

Judgment Day
According Christian tradition, the rapture is the day when believers will ascend to heaven and be rewarded with everlasting life.

According to the predictions of Christian radio broadcaster Harold Camping, May 21 will be the day of the rapture, when God calls believers to heaven to live in everlasting paradise.

By Camping’s estimation, that means the Earth will be 200 million souls lighter by Sunday morning. [Infographic: A Brief History of Doomsday]

While there’s no reason to believe that Camping’s doomsday predictions are more reliable than the hundreds of failed end-of-the-world predictions throughout history, the loss of 200 million people all at once would be the largest single population decrease in human history. It’s safe to say the world would take notice — but the effects of such a mass disappearance would depend on where believers were concentrated.

Solar Filament

First there was “Dawn of the Dead.” Then there was “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (Quirk Books, 2009). Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are jumping on the zombie bandwagon.

Yes, that CDC. A post on the health agency’s blog titled “Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse” went viral this week, causing the blog’s servers to temporarily crash. The blog normally gets 1,000 to 3,000 hits per day, said CDC spokesperson Dave Daigle. Before the page went down on Wednesday (May 18), the post had garnered 30,000 hits. As of Thursday morning, 55,000 people had clicked on the post.

“We did not anticipate this type of reaction,” Daigle told LiveScience.

Panera ‘Pay-What-You-Want’ A Success

Year Later, Pay-What-You-Want Panera a Success

By JIM SALTER Associated Press
CLAYTON, Mo. May 16, 2011 (AP)

Rashonda Thornton looked up at the menu on the wall, ordered a Caesar salad and dropped a $10 bill in a box. Pretty generous, considering the meal at Panera Bread Co.’s café in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton sells for less than $7.

It was a year ago that Panera converted the Clayton restaurant into a nonprofit pay-what-you-want restaurant with the idea of helping to feed the needy and raising money for charitable work. Panera founder and Chairman Ronald Shaich said the café, operated through Panera’s charitable foundation, has been a big success, largely because of people like Thornton.

“Sometimes you can give more, and sometimes you can give less,” said Thornton, a teacher’s assistant. “Today was one of my ‘more’ days.”
