SAN DIEGO — In the western San Bernardino Mountains, near the highway that links Los Angeles and Las Vegas, scientists recently discovered a geological mystery: colossal rocks perched in precarious poses right next door to the San Andreas Fault.

It’s not the rocks’ balancing act that is perplexing, said Lisa Grant Ludwig, a scientist who presented this puzzle to colleagues this week here at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America. It’s how the rocks have managed to stay that way with such an aggressive maker of powerful earthquakes just a few miles away.

Rocks with seemingly acrobatic balance are seen all over the world. Meteorological and geological forces wash away the material around them, leaving the giant rocks balancedlike a top. There’s even a term for them: Precariously Balanced Rocks, or PBRs for short, said Ludwig, an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine.

“When you start to get into seismically active areas there are fewer and fewer,” Ludwig told OurAmazingPlanet. “And you don’t expect to see them right next to active faults —and you don’t, generally.”

Still standing

In fact, PBRs are used to verify earthquake hazard maps. “Quite some time ago it was recognized that wherever you see these things, it’s an indication there haven’t been a lot of really strong earthquakes because they haven’t been shaken down,” Ludwig said.

That’s what makes the San Bernardino PBRs so very strange. There are two pockets of more than a dozen of the gracefully balancing rocks, and some are only 4 miles (7 kilometers) from the fault.

Ludwig said that when a colleague brought her pictures of the rocks — and asked how they could possibly withstand the earthquakes that tear along the San Andreas Fault — she had to go see them for herself.

“I have spent most of my career documenting large earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault,” Ludwig said. “I could rock some of [the PBRs] with my hand.”

Seismic mystery

Subsequent dating research revealed that the rocks had been standing in their positions for millennia — in some cases as long as 18,000 years. “That’s a long time for something that is so close to a big fault,” Ludwig said.

It’s not clear why violent shaking has apparently spared the two small pockets near the fault where the rocks still stand. “I think it shows an area of complexity in the fault rupture,” Ludwig said, “and that is what a lot of my colleagues seem to agree on in the discussion.”

She said it’s something that researchers will be pursuing next. “We don’t have a good explanation,” she said.

What Dog Preferences Say About Us

What Your Dog’s Breed Says About You

Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua Tinkerbell may be more than just a purse accessory. According to new research, the breed of dog you choose can reflect your personality.

Owners of toy dogs, like Hilton and — believe it or not — Sir Isaac Newton, score high on a personality trait called openness, a measure of how intellectually curious, open to new experiences and appreciative of arts and culture a person is. Meanwhile, owners of famously friendly dogs such as the Labrador retriever are likely to be the most agreeable personalities around.

“We go for dogs that are a bit like us, just as we go for a romantic partner who is a bit like us,” study researcher Lance Workman, a psychologist at Bath Spa University in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience.

Workman and his colleagues are interested in how personality traits influence real-world behavior. They focused on dog ownership because earlier studies have found personality differences between dog owners and non-dog owners (dog owners tend to be more agreeable). In one study, Workman and his co-authors found that people are even able to match purebred dogs with their owners, suggesting that certain breeds are associated with certain types of people.

In collaboration with the Kennel Club, the researchers set up an online questionnaire for 1,000 owners of purebred dogs. The questionnaire measured what psychologists call the “Big Five” personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism, a measure of anxiety.

To simplify matters, they split the dog breeds into seven Kennel Club categories: gun dogs, such as the Lab or golden retriever; hound dogs, such as the greyhound; pastoral breeds, including German shepherds and collies; terriers, such as the Staffordshire bull terrier; toy breeds, including Chihuahuas; utility breeds, such as bulldogs; and working breeds, such as the Doberman.

The results revealed correlations between the type of dog and the owner’s personality.  People who own pastoral or utility breeds are the most extroverted of any dog owners. Owners of gun dogs and toy dogs were most agreeable. The most emotionally stable people tended to own hounds, including beagles and Afghans. Toy dog owners were also the most open and imaginative bunch.

“It breaks down the stereotype that owners of toy dogs are airheads, basically,” Workman said.

The study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, is being presented this week at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference in London. The findings suggest that dog owners naturally gravitate toward hounds that fit their personality and lifestyle.

But the information might also come in handy for people just starting to pick out a furry pal, Workman said. The questionnaire could be developed to include not only personality concerns, but also practical ones such as living space. Prospective dog-owners would then have a data-based way to choose a breed — a method that could lead to fewer dogs sent to the pound, Workman said.

“You would type in these answers, and it would expand the 50 questions we’ve got to go into lifestyle, and it would say, ‘This is the dog for you,'” he said.

April 22-28

This is a week for knowing what is and what is not important.  The answers to these questions may surprise you. Your [priorities have been shifting in many different ways.  Because of everything else that has been going on, you have not been aware of all the deep changes that are happening within your energetic core.  This week, they will be brought forward as you make choices that are surprising to you.  Look at these, and spend time with them.  There is much that you can learn from that.  You may find that some of your favorites no longer attract you as they once did.  This includes people, foods, places, things, programs, etc.  The changes in energy that are happening cannot but affect your energy also.  Much of this is on a subtle level, but as things mount up, they come to the surface.  This week, that is what will be happening.  Be aware of Freudian slips and be alert for synchronicity.  There are hints in all of this.

On the larger scale, things will start out quietly this week, however as the middle of the week arrives, there will be an huge crescendo of activity in all areas.  This will take many b y surprise as much of it is unexpected, even unthinkable.  The Trickster is out this week making sure things log shots and log shots shoe-ins.  All of this can lead to uncertainty in politics, finance, travel, the weather, etc., etc., etc.  Look for an announcement that can shake up some tottering political situations.  Also, it appears that there can be some issues this week with communications and electronics.

Sunday, April 22:    Lime Green

This is a day in which resolution is in the air.  In order to benefit from this frequency, however, you will need to focus on what it is that you are wanting to resolve in your life.  At this time, you need to be a part of what is going on and to own it in all its various elements and permutations.  Step back and look at the big picture.  Let the pattern emerge.  There is more going on than can be seen from a single point of view.  Open up to your own unlimited potential, and you will find a hint of what is to come.  You are part of the process, so you will want to be aware of how it is moving forward.  By so doing, you can gain control and walk into your power.

Crystal Vibe:    Strawberry Rutile Quarts—The energy of this stone bring awareness and recognition on many levels and in different dimensions.  It is a gentle facilitator, needing you to be patient and understanding as things come to the fore.  Resonates with the Third Eye, Crown, and Upper Chakras.

Monday, April 23:   Royal L:avender

Happy Birthday, Emilie:    This is a day for dreams.  The current energy holds the promise that dreams can come true.  Take time to be with yourself, your innermost desires.  Take time to acknowledge your connection with Universal Consciousness.  Perspectives are shifting, and you will be seeing things differently.  The dimensions continue their leakiness as things pop in and out of view.  Be aware of things at the periphery today.  They have a message.  There is a sense that what once did not belong is not part of the whole picture.  By acknowledging this, you can find yourself opening to new ideas and inventions, people, places, and things as this day wears on.  Take time tonight to relax and meditate, whatever that means to you.  There is fulfillment in this.

Crystal Vibe:    Solution Crystal—-This stone vibrates to the fairy frequency.  It is a connector with the Elementals and the energy of Gaia. It opens to resolution and understanding.  Resonates with the Root, Crown and Ninth Chakras.

Tuesday, April 24:    Pale  Gold

Things are stirring beneath the surface today.  Take time to look below what is out in front of you.  Much is being communicated without words or actions.  Emotions and feeling lie close to the surface.  You can be moved to tears or find yourself laughing at the slightest thing.  This might confuse you a  bit, but let it go.  The current energy is calling for just being in the moment.  Do not try to read into things.  They are just what they are.  You are jsut what you are.  This is a good day for doing some personal work, writing, journaling, drawing, meditating, whatever fulfills your creative urge.  Then put it aside.  You are giving yourself a message, a treasure, that you will better understand in a few days.

Crystal Vibe:    Tibetan quartz—-This mineral assists actively in the realization of creative potential.  It activates the healing energies that are imminent in Nature and opens them for those who are requesting aid.  Resonates with the Navel and Tenth Chakras.

Wednesday, April 25:    Lavender

There is a calm in the air today.  It is best to take advantage of it to tie up some loose ends, to have conversations that you have been putting off, to get some perspective in terms of what it is that you are attempting to manifest in your life.  There is help out there on many levels, some physical, some dimensional, some spiritual.  This is a day when you can create something.  It is good to start out the day grounded and centered and with a firm intention.  While the calm allows for things to happen more easily, it can also lead to dreaminess and lack of concentration.  By intending your day you can get a lot accomplished.

Thursday, April 26:    Light Blue

The senses will be very active today, and it is this fact that will make you realize that you have been hearing more, seeing more, smelling more for some time.  Pay attention to the evidence of the sense ofr  it has messages to bring you of the changes that are at hand.  You can find that you are seeing into more than even before, and this can include personal relations, business endeavors, etc.  Trust your intuition today.  There can be some times when you will need to respond quickly and your intuition can guide you in the most appropriate path.

Friday, April 27:    Pink Flesh

This is a day you make all for yourself and all by yourself.  Be thoughtful and heart-full in your choices for they will reflect WHO you are.  You may, therefore, discover some unusual things about yourself.    This is not a day for paying attention to or taking cues from others.  Doing so can confuse the growth process that is going on right now.  Look through your own eyes.  Use your own discretion.  Follow your own intuition.  You are moving forward in your process.  Yes, interaction happens, but you can distance yourself from the stuff of others.  See if for what it is and give it back to them

Current Solar Activity

SUNSPOT GENESIS: The solar disk is peppered with sunspots and at least three of them are crackling with C-class solar flares. Make that four. A new sunspot, AR1465, has just broken through the stellar surface to join the action. Cai-Uso Wohler photographed the emergence from his backyard observatory in Bispingen, Germany:

NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of an M-class flare during the next 24 hours. As the youngest and least stable of the sunspots, AR1465 is the most likely source. Stay tuned for solar activity

FACTS RIP 4.18.2012

Facts, 360 B.C.-A.D. 2012

In memoriam: After years of health problems, Facts has finally died.

By Rex W. Huppke, Chicago Tribune reporter

April 19, 2012

A quick review of the long and illustrious career of Facts reveals some of the world’s most cherished absolutes: Gravity makes things fall down; 2 + 2 = 4; the sky is blue.

But for many, Facts’ most memorable moments came in simple day-to-day realities, from a child’s certainty of its mother’s love to the comforting knowledge that a favorite television show would start promptly at 8 p.m.

Over the centuries, Facts became such a prevalent part of most people’s lives that Irish philosopher Edmund Burke once said: “Facts are to the mind what food is to the body.”

To the shock of most sentient beings, Facts died Wednesday, April 18, after a long battle for relevancy with the 24-hour news cycle, blogs and the Internet. Though few expected Facts to pull out of its years-long downward spiral, the official cause of death was from injuries suffered last week when Florida Republican Rep. Allen West steadfastly declared that as many as 81 of his fellow members of theU.S. House of Representatives are communists.

Facts held on for several days after that assault — brought on without a scrap of evidence or reason — before expiring peacefully at its home in a high school physics book. Facts was 2,372.

“It’s very depressing,” said Mary Poovey, a professor of English at New York University and author of “A History of the Modern Fact.” “I think the thing Americans ought to miss most about facts is the lack of agreement that there are facts. This means we will never reach consensus about anything. Tax policies, presidential candidates. We’ll never agree on anything.”

Facts was born in ancient Greece, the brainchild of famed philosopher Aristotle. Poovey said that in its youth, Facts was viewed as “universal principles that everybody agrees on” or “shared assumptions.”

But in the late 16th century, English philosopher and scientist Sir Francis Bacon took Facts under his wing and began to develop a new way of thinking.

“There was a shift of the word ‘fact’ to refer to empirical observations,” Poovey said.

Facts became concrete observations based on evidence. It was growing up.

Through the 19th and 20th centuries, Facts reached adulthood as the world underwent a shift toward proving things true through the principles of physics and mathematical modeling. There was respect for scientists as arbiters of the truth, and Facts itself reached the peak of its power.

But those halcyon days would not last.

People unable to understand how science works began to question Facts. And at the same time there was a rise in political partisanship and a growth in the number of media outlets that would disseminate information, rarely relying on feedback from Facts.

“There was an erosion of any kind of collective sense of what’s true or how you would go about verifying any truth claims,” Poovey said. “Opinion has become the new truth. And many people who already have opinions see in the ‘news’ an affirmation of the opinion they already had, and that confirms their opinion as fact.”

Though weakened, Facts managed to persevere through the last two decades, despite historic setbacks that included President Bill Clinton‘s affair with Monica Lewinsky, the justification for PresidentGeorge W. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq and the debate over President Barack Obama’s American citizenship.

Facts was wounded repeatedly throughout the recent GOP primary campaign, near fatally when Michele Bachmann claimed a vaccine for a sexually transmitted diseas ecauses mental retardation. In December, Facts was briefly hospitalized after MSNBC’serroneous report that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney‘s campaign was using an expression once used by the Ku Klux Klan.

But friends and relatives of Facts said Rep. West’s claim that dozens of Democratic politicians are communists was simply too much for the aging concept to overcome.

As the world mourned Wednesday, some were unwilling to believe Facts was actually gone.

Gary Alan Fine, the John Evans Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University, said: “Facts aren’t dead. If anything, there are too many of them out there. There has been a population explosion.”

Fine pointed to one of Facts’ greatest battles, the debate over global warming.

“There are all kinds of studies out there,” he said. “There is more than enough information to make any case you want to make. There may be a preponderance of evidence and there are communities that decide something is a fact, but there are enough facts that people who are opposed to that claim have their own facts to rely on.”

To some, Fine’s insistence on Facts’ survival may seem reminiscent of the belief that rock stars like Jim Morrison are still alive.

“How do I know if Jim Morrison is dead?” Fine asked. “How do I know he’s dead except that somebody told me that?”

Poovey, however, who knew Facts as well as anyone, said Facts’ demise is undoubtedly factual.

“American society has lost confidence that there’s a single alternative,” she said. “Anybody can express an opinion on a blog or any other outlet and there’s no system of verification or double-checking, you just say whatever you want to and it gets magnified. It’s just kind of a bizarre world in which one person’s opinion counts as much as anybody else’s.”

Facts is survived by two brothers, Rumor and Innuendo, and a sister, Emphatic Assertion.

Services are alleged to be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that mourners make a donation to their favorite super PAC.

Sunspot AR 1460

GROWING SUNSPOT: What a difference a day makes. On April 16th, sunspot AR1460 did not exist. Twenty-four hours later it was twice as big as the planet Earth. This April 17th movie from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory shows sunspot genesis in action:

The sunspot’s magnetic field is still too simple for strong flares, but if the expansion continues apace, instabilities could develop that lead to explosions. Readers with solar telescopes should keep an eye on AR1460.

Physicists Questioning Time as the Fourth Dimension

Physicists continue work to abolish time as fourth dimension of space

Apr 14, Physics/General Physics

Light clocks A and B moving horizontally through space. According to length contraction, clock A should tick faster than clock B. In a new study, scientists argue that there is no length contraction, and both clocks should tick at the same rate in accordance with special relativity. Image credit: Sorli and Fiscaletti.

(Phys.org) — Philosophers have debated the nature of time long before Einstein and modern physics. But in the 106 years since Einstein, the prevailing view in physics has been that time serves as the fourth dimension of space, an arena represented mathematically as 4D Minkowski spacetime. However, some scientists, including Amrit Sorli and Davide Fiscaletti, founders of the Space Life Institute in Slovenia, argue that time exists completely independent from space. In a new study, Sorli and Fiscaletti have shown that two phenomena of special relativity – time dilation and length contraction – can be better described within the framework of a 3D space with time as the quantity used to measure change (i.e., photon motion) in this space.

The scientists have published their article in a recent issue of Physics Essays. The work builds on their previous articles, in which they have investigated the definition of time as a “numerical order of material change.”

The main concepts of  – that the speed of light is the same in all inertial reference frames, and that there is no absolute reference frame – are traditionally formulated within the framework of Minkowski spacetime. In this framework, the three spatial dimensions are intuitively visualized, while the time dimension is mathematically represented by an imaginary coordinate, and cannot be visualized in a concrete way.

In their paper, Sorli and Fiscaletti argue that, while the concepts of special relativity are sound, the introduction of 4D Minkowski spacetime has created a century-long misunderstanding of time as the  of space that lacks any experimental support. They argue that well-known  experiments, such as those demonstrating that clocks do in fact run slower in high-speed airplanes than at rest, support special relativity and time dilation but not necessarily Minkowski spacetime or length contraction. According to the conventional view, clocks run slower at high speeds due to the nature of Minkowski spacetime itself as a result of both time dilation and length contraction. But Sorli and Fiscaletti argue that the slow clocks can better be described by the relative velocity between the two reference frames, which the clocks measure, not which the clocks are a part of. In this view, space and time are two separate entities.

“With clocks we measure the numerical order of motion in ,” Sorli told Phys.org. “Time is ‘separated’ from space in a sense that time is not a fourth dimension of space. Instead, time as a numerical order of change exists in a 3D space. Our model on space and time is founded on measurement and corresponds better to physical reality.”

To illustrate the difference between the two views of time, Sorli and Fiscaletti consider an experiment involving two light clocks. Each clock’s ticking mechanism consists of a photon being reflected back and forth between two mirrors, so that a photon’s path from one mirror to the other represents one tick of the clock. The clocks are arranged perpendicular to each other on a platform, with clock A oriented horizontally and clock B vertically. When the platform is moved horizontally at a high speed, then according to the length contraction phenomenon in 4D spacetime, clock A should shrink so that its photon has a shorter path to travel, causing it to tick faster than clock B.

But Sorli and Fiscaletti argue that the length contraction of clock A and subsequent difference in the ticking rates of clocks A and B do not agree with special relativity, which postulates that the speed of light is constant in all inertial reference frames. They say that, keeping the photon speed the same for both clocks, both clocks should tick at the same rate with no length contraction for clock A. They mathematically demonstrate how to resolve the problem in this way by replacing Minkowski 4D spacetime with a 3D space involving Galilean transformations for three spatial coordinates X, Y, and Z, and a mathematical equation (Selleri’s formalism) for the transformation of the velocity of material change, which is completely independent of the spatial coordinates.

Sorli explained that this idea that both photon clocks tick at the same rate is not at odds with the experiments with flying clocks and other tests that have measured time dilation. This difference, he says, is due to a difference between photon clocks and atom-based clocks.

“The rate of photon clocks in faster inertial systems will not slow down with regard to the photon clocks in a rest inertial system because the speed of light is constant in all inertial systems,” he said. “The rate of atom clocks will slow down because the ‘relativity’ of physical  starts at the scale of pi mesons.”

He also explained that, without length contraction,  exists but in a different way than usually thought.

“Time dilatation exists not in the sense that time as a fourth dimension of space dilates and as a result the clock rate is slower,” he explained. “Time dilatation simply means that, in a faster inertial system, the velocity of change slows down and this is valid for all observers. GPS confirms that clocks in orbit stations have different rates from the clocks on the surface of the planet, and this difference is valid for observers that are on the orbit station and on the surface of the planet. So interpreted, ‘time dilatation’ does not require ‘length contraction,’ which as we show in our paper leads to a contradiction by the light clocks differently positioned in a moving inertial system.”

He added that the alternative definition of time also agrees with the notion of time held by the mathematician and philosopher Kurt Gödel.

“The definition of time as a numerical order of change in space is replacing the 106-year-old concept of time as a physical dimension in which change runs,” Sorli said. “We consider time being only a mathematical quantity of change that we measure with clocks. This is in accord with a Gödel view of time. By 1949, Gödel had produced a remarkable proof: ‘In any universe described by the theory of relativity, time cannot exist.’ Our research confirms Gödel’s vision: time is not a physical dimension of space through which one could travel into the past or future.”

In the future, Sorli and Fiscaletti plan to investigate how this view of time fits with the broader surroundings. They note that other researchers have investigated abolishing the idea of spacetime in favor of separate space and entities, but often suggest that this perspective is best formulated within the framework of an ether, a physical medium permeating all of space. In contrast, Sorli and Fiscaletti think that the idea can be better modeled within the framework of a 3D quantum vacuum. Rather than viewing  as a medium that carries light, light’s propagation is governed by the electromagnetic properties (the permeability and permittivity) of the quantum vacuum.

“We are developing a mathematical model where gravity is a result of the diminished energy density of a 3D quantum vacuum caused by the presence of a given stellar object or material body,” Sorli said. “Inertial mass and gravitational mass have the same origin: diminished energy density of a quantum vacuum. This model gives exact calculations for the Mercury perihelion precession as calculations of the general theory of relativity.”

LYRID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is approaching the debris field of ancient Comet Thatcher, source of the annual Lyrid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on April 21-22; a nearly-new moon on those dates will provide perfect dark-sky conditions for meteor watching. Usually the shower is mild (10-20 meteors per hour) but unmapped filaments of dust in the comet’s tail sometimes trigger outbursts 10 times stronger. [video] [Lyrid chat]

Awe-Inspiring Eruption on the Sun

SPECTACULAR EXPLOSION (UPDATED): Magnetic fields on the sun’s northeastern limb erupted around 17:45 UT on April 16th, producing one of the most visually-spectacular explosions in years. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths:

The explosion, which registered M1.7 on the Richter Scale of solar flares, was not Earth-directed, but it did hurl a CME into space. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather have analyzed the trajectory of the cloud and found that it will hit NASA’s STEREO-B spacecraft, the Spitzer space telescope, and the rover Curiosity en route to Mars. Planets Venus and Mars could also receive a glancing blow.

This event confirms suspicions that an active region of significance is rotating onto the Earth-facing side of the sun.

UPDATE: Using data from SDO, Steele Hill of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has assembled a must-see movie of the event. The movie shows the explosion unfolding at 304 Angstroms, a wavelength which traces plasma with a temperature around 80,000 K.

Magical Thinking: It’s good for you!

Hugh Pickens at Slashdot gives us this gem:

“Natalie Wolchover says even the most die-hard skeptics among us believe in magic. Humans can’t help it: though we try to be logical, irrational beliefs — many of which we aren’t even conscious of — are hardwired in our psyches. ‘The unavoidable habits of mind that make us think luck and supernatural forces are real, that objects and symbols have power, and that humans have souls and destinies are part of what has made our species so evolutionarily successful,’ writes Wolchover.
