Update 08:31 UTC : When you are reading these updates, we at ER are calling you a premium reader. The world has almost NO attention for even massive earthquakes who occur in remote less popular areas as PNG. For us at ER we do follow earthquakes all over the world precisely because we think every country on the globe has the right to be informed.

Update 08:30 UTC : Below the Geofon seismogram from the seismograph installed in Port Moresby, Eastern PNG. Pretty impressive picture.

Update 08:06 UTC : The focal mechanism image below (courtesy Geofon) shows a spreading mechanism (extension).  “Understanding Beach Balls” article. The PNG Solomon region is a very complicated tectonics area with a lot of very strong interaction among many plates and sub-plates.

Update 08:00 UTC : The buoy in the middle of the map (somewhat greater icon) is the activated alert with the reading of it (showing minor changes on the red line 15 second interval)

Update 07:50 UTC : Professor Max Wyss, who specializes in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities expects : NO expected injuries or fatalities due to shaking

Update 07:40 UTC : No reason to believe that shaking would be a problem as only 1000 people would have felt a strong shaking (the epicenter is off the coast). A very strong shaking is at least necessary for serious damage.

Update 07:35 UTC : We do fear for some Tsunami risk on the nearby islands. People are used to massive earthquakes in PNG and the Solomon Islands but tsunami’s are always a risk. A distance of 160 km means less than 10 minutes for tsunami waves but local people tend to immediately look for higher grounds if the feel very strong shaking like in this case.

Papua New Guinea Earthquake

Very Strong earthquake below New Britain, Papua New Guinea

Last update: April 30, 2015 at 11:39 am by By

Update 11:00 UTC : NO Tsunami (PWTC) –   * AN EARTHQUAKE WITH A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.8 OCCURRED IN     THE NEW BRITAIN REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA AT 1045 UTC ON THURSDAY APRIL 30 2015.
* BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA… THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT FROM THIS EARTHQUAKE

Update 10:56 UTC : ER expects not to hear from any damage from this earthquake, mainly because it happened in a jungle area without roads and very few villages. Additionally M6.6 is not very spectacular for PNG who gets regularly M7+ earthquakes. Houses in the jungle have also a lot of resistance against earthquakes

New Britain, PNG Earthquake 7/8

Very Strong dangerous earthquake below New Britain, Papua New Guinea

Last update: July 7, 2013 at 10:10 pm by By

Update 22:06 UTC : Landslides ara a real risk in this mountainous rain forest region.  The is a road connecting the epicenter area with the bigger towns to the north, but we think that this is a dirt road which will be probably severely damaged by landslides. Most of the populated locations in the area are tribal settlements who are living in wooden houses. these houses have a high degree of resistance against earthquakes.

Update 22:02 UTC : The image below shows the number of people living near the (USGS) epicenter.  Due to the depth of at least 50 km of the hypocenter, we believe that the strongest shaking will have taken place in a radius of 40 km and that there will be only a limited difference in shaking with this radius.

Update 21:57 UTC : Shaking intensities based on theoretical models and on the Magnitude and depth as provided by USGS :
MMI VI  (strong shaking)   Kandrian    1k
V    (Moderate shaking) Kimbe    19k
IV    (Light shaking) Finschhafen    1k
IV    Lae    76k
IV    Popondetta    28k
IV    Kokoda    6k
IV    Kokopo    26k

One earthquake was not enough for Papua New Guinea today. After the massive very deep earthquake East of New Ireland, another very strong earthquake hit New Britain. The seismological agencies are reporting a depth of 50 to 80 km, which is a big difference in damage risk.  USGS reporting a depth of 50 km is mentioning a MMI VII, very strong shaking in the epicenter area.
