Indonesia Volcanology Centre and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG)prohibits people to approach Krakatau volcano within a radius of 2 kilometer. Krakatau has been seismically overactive since Tuesday.
On September 30 PVMBG increased the alert status from 2 to 3 (on a scale from 0 to 4).

Although nothing uncommon happens visually at the moment (Krakatau has small explosive eruptions many times a day all year), the number of volcanic earthquakes is very high since Tuesday.

The PVMBG specialists who are guarding the volcano are saying however that a violent eruption generating a tsunami is highly unlikely at this alert level (krakatau is an island and a huge part of the volcano is below sea level). Many coastal villages in the Sunda strait are very scared that this volcano with a violent past will explode again. Scientists can  predict volcano eruptions fairly good today. GPS recordings which show an eventual deformation of parts of the volcano are giving a good hint in the potential danger.
The inhabitants of the coastal villages have been told by the scientists that they should calm down because a major eruption like the 1883 is highly unlikely at this moment.

Dukono volcano (North Halmahera regency, Indonesia) activity increased on September 6, 2011 in sending volcanic ash clouds as high as 800 meters in the sky.
The capital town of the Halmahera regency lies at the port of Tobelo, approx. 15 km from the volcano (population approx. 15,000).
Residents were asked to evacuate at least about two kilometers from the foot of the volcano.
The volcano observation post at Mount Dukono, told the press that dozens of volcanic earthquakes occurred every day.
The eruption can be seen from Ternate, and island and biggest city in the area (has also an airport).
The volcano is currently in PVMBG Alert status III (local sources) although the official PVMBG site is still showing a II alert status (alert status range from 1 to IV).
North Halmehara is part of the province of North Maluku (Moluccas)

Update: Soputan Volcano, Indonesia

Soputan volcano Sulawesi, Indonesia : New eruption on 14-15/08/2011 + alert level increase + eruption and damage videos

Last update: August 15, 2011 at 8:17 am by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell

UPDATE 15/08-07:20 UTC : The eruption is still going on but is weakening a little bit.  Visual observation of the volcano has detected  at least 40 debris avalanches around the craters. This means that volcanic activity is still continuing. The safety No-Go radius has been widened yesterday to  6 km. The closest village just outside the dangerous perimeter is Desa Kota Menara.

UPDATE 14/08-17:30 UTC : A couple of minutes ago “TheBuracho69″ has uploaded a video of the eruption on YouTube. The quality is not super, but the video footage shows very well the strength of the ash cloud. The last images are showing the strongest part of the eruption

UPDATE 14/08-10:26 UTC : The local government of Garut regency, West Java has started the planning of evacuation routes. The government does not want to improvise if the alert status would go up further to level IV (the alert level remains at III since yesterday).
Garut Regent HM Aceng Fikri, said that thevillages of Citeureup, Bayongbong andCisurupan located along the River Cibeureum,  will probably be exposed to a possible direct impact of volcanic activity.
The villages are located approx. 7 kilometers from the crater of Papandayan volcano. Additionally, the local government will be ready with all necessary relief aid and equipment if an evacuataion would be imminent.  As the Papandayan volcano has an explosive history, people are scared for destructive Lahars and pyroclastic clouds.
lahar is a type of mudflow or debris flow composed of a slurry of pyroclastic material, rocky debris, and water. The material flows down from a volcano, typically along a river valley.

Major Indonesian Volcano Alert

18 Indonesian volcanoes on alert status

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sun, 08/07/2011 1:05 PM

Eighteen Indonesian volcanoes are on “alert” status, two of which are at Alert Level 3, which is called “Siaga”, the Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center says.

Center head Surono said Sunday in Jakarta the erupting Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi and Mount Ibu in North Maluku were the two volcanoes at Siaga status.

The center has adopted four levels of alert status: “Normal” (Level 1), “Waspada” (Level 2), “Siaga” (Level 3) and “Awas” (Level 4).

Surono said the conditions at Mt Lokon and Mt Ibu were currently considered most worrisome because they had been consistently erupting searing clouds affecting a radius of 2.5 kilometers.

He added, however, that the eruptions had not yet endangered people living around the volcanoes.

“The eruptions are heading west, while people are concentrated in east,” he said as quoted bytempointeraktif.com.

Surono added that 16 other volcanoes were at Level 2 alert status, “Waspada”, including Mt. Papandayan and Mt. Guntur in West Java.

“Locals have reported several quakes,” he said.

Surono said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had summoned him on Saturday to report the volcanoes’ status and the center’s preparations to anticipate possible disasters.

Indonesia’s Mt. Lokon Erupts Twice

Double eruption at Indonesia volcano: vulcanologist

(AFP) – 1 day ago

JAKARTA — An Indonesian volcano erupted twice on Monday following its biggest eruption in weeks over the weekend, a government vulcanologist said, forcing people to remain in safety shelters.

“The two eruptions happened within ten minutes which sent a column of ash and smoke up to 600 metres (1,968 feet) into the air,” government vulcanologist Freddy Korompis told AFP from a monitoring post.

The 1,580-metre Mount Lokon experienced its biggest eruption on Sunday with huge clouds of ash propelled 3,500 metres (11,500 feet) into the sky.
