When cosmologists describe the formation of the Universe as occurring through the Big Bang – the logical question most people ask is “what happened before the Big Bang?” And the proper response to whatever explanation is given to that inquiry would logically be “oh, I see, well what happened before that?” This is much akin to asking what exists outside of the Universe – and it is an excellent line of inquiry because it forces our normally finite thought processes to ponder the nature of infinity. And perhaps most salient of all, it is an examination of the nature of causality and raises the question – What is time?

 This is a question that has evaded a clear and definite answer within physics right up to our modern day theories. Time is absolutely fundamental to most of our conceptions of reality, and yet there is no consensus about what exactly time is. In the theory of Relativity, Einstein showed that time is relative – replacing the Newtonian framework of absolute time, wherein events in the Universe take place within an unchanging frame-of-reference, yet do not influence it in anyway. Interestingly, this still seems to be the conception of time harbored by most individuals (scientists included) – even after Einstein’s theory suggested that our experience of time is only relative to our frame of reference, such as how fast we are moving (different velocities will experience an objective difference in the passage of time, with inertial frames of reference that are traveling at greater velocities experiencing a slower progression of time relative to slower moving ones – so called time dilation factors). As Einstein put it – “put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT’S relativity.” Not so difficult to understand after all?

Note, since photons are moving at the velocity c (the speed of light, 300,000 km/s) – this would suggest that time is “standing still” for these particles – relative to an observer traveling at sub-c.

Yet, saying that time is relative does not explain what time is. In his original publication– On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies – wherein the principle of relativity is proposed, Einstein explains his definition of time in the following way:

The “time” of an event is that which is given simultaneously with the event by a stationary clock located at the place of the event, this clock being synchronous, and indeed synchronous for all time determinations, with a specified stationary clock.

According to this definition, which is the basis for the theory of General Relativity, and hence modern physics – time is the correspondence of events with a particular configuration of the hands on a clock located at the place of that event.  While this definition certainly sufficed to describe the principles behind the relativity of time – there are many major assumptions within the definition. Because the logical question to ask is, what is a clock? What is a clock’s relation to the concept of time?  The answer to these questions is – yet again – that what we call time is the relative correspondence of the geometric configurations of objects in space. To a certain extent this makes sense as our entire conception of time is based on the Earth’s movement through space: its orbital rotation and revolution around the Sun, begging the question “does time perhaps arise from spin?”

Regarding what Physics has to say on the nature of time, it is being shown more and more that time is perhaps an emergent phenomenon. That is, it does not underlie events, as something fundamental to physical processes – it emerges from them. Indeed, many posited solutions to quantum gravity do not involve time as a physical parameter within the calculations – such as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, and more recently the geometric solution for particle interactions known as the Amplituhedron (see our article A Jewel at the Heart of Quantum Physics). For a truly enlightening exploration of the concept of time and a new theory regarding its nature, see the work of Julian Barbour, and his book The End of Time. Since this plays very predominantly into the framework of quantum gravity, understanding the nature of time may be instrumental to the unification of Physics – a Unified Field Theory.

When General Relativity was first quantized (becoming a theory of quantum gravity) in the 1960’s by John Wheeler, the result predicted a static state of the Universe, that is – no change, i.e. timelessness. This particular solution to the quantization of General Relativity is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The result seemed to be paradoxical – because how can the Universe be static and unchanging – when our every experience is of change. Like the seeming axiom, ‘the only thing that stays the same is change’.

Recently, an experiment has been performed with entangled photons that suggests time may be related to the quantum correlation – entanglement – of a subsystem with itself. A subsystem is much like the particular inertial frames of reference within General Relativity (an inertial frame of reference is an observer-dependent area that is defined as interacting uniquely from adjacent areas or systems). The static entangled photons appears to change to an internal observer when one of the photons is used as a clock to measure the evolution of the other. This is done by depriving the internal observer of an external clock, and only allowing the evolution of the subsystem to be determined by correlation measurements (such as changes in polarity). As the measurements are made, the internal observer becomes nonlocally correlated with the subsystem of photons, and this quantum spacetime interconnectivity makes it appear to the entangled observer that the photons have changed.

The remarkable occurs when it is demonstrated that if the entangled photons are measured without becoming entangled with them – which is accomplished by measuring their global, or overall state instead of the correlation between them, as is done for the internal observer – it can be shown that no change has occurred. The experimenters utilize an interesting technique to accomplish measuring the state of the entangled photons without actually disturbing the quantum correlation between them. The experiment uses a form of quantum erasure, in which the measurement that normally destroys the quantum “superposition” of a wave-particle can be reversed through operations performed on an entangled counterpart.

One of the photons goes directly to a detector, while polarizing filters “mark” the other photon as it passes through a double slit mask. Marking the photon in this way will inhibit formation of a wave interference pattern. If however, the other entangled photon (which does not pass through a double-slit but instead goes directly to a detector) is passed through a polarizing filter it “unmarks” the entangled counterpart – which will then produce a wave-interference pattern. In this way, it is thought that the operation on the first photon removes, or erases, the measurement performed on the second by the polarizing filters – allowing for “self-interference” of the photon passing through the double-slits, which will then result in a wave-interference pattern. Hence the appellation – quantum erasure.

Recall that one of the entangled photons was utilized as a clock to measure the evolution of the second, and this produces entanglement of the observer with that system. However, if those measurements are coherently erased, through a quantum erasure, then the observer can in a sense measure the global configuration of the subsystem without becoming entangled with it. From this vantage perspective, the so called super-observer can now determine if the global state of the photons evolves. And remarkably, the results suggest that the super-observer can show that there is no evolution of the subsystem, simply by not becoming correlated with the entangled photons.

The photons remain unchanged and static even while the entangled measurement of their quantum correlation gives the internal observer an apparent change – but it is an apparition of time! While this is all accomplished with a very clever experimental design – it does demonstrate how the appearance of change, or time, can emerge even within a static, timeless Universe. In this sense, there is time, but it is only the appearance of change within subsystems that are strongly correlated together – but less so with the overall system, being the Universe itself, which at that global scale, according to their result, experiences no net change, and within this model would be eternal.

In Haramein’s model (Quantum Gravity and the Holographic Mass) time is a function of the relationship of orbiting bodies relative to each other leaving a memory imprint on the structure of spacetime (encoded in Planck information pixels). In fact, he is able to show that the Planck pixels volume-to-surface ratio relationship generate the mass/energy of objects. However, the rotational relationships of all systems in an infinite boundary division Universe or multiverse would all cancel out so that each center of rotation would be the stillness that centers the rotation of all other relationships to infinity. Therefore, the global collective scale sees no change, while the local scale is obviously continuously changing. One could think of this as the center of your experience being the infinitely unchanging present emerging from the continuous changes of the past and the possible path of changes of the future.

9/07 Asteroid Flyby

WEEKEND ASTEROID FLYBY: This Sunday, a house-sized asteroid named “2014 RC” will fly through the Earth-Moon system almost inside the orbit of geosynchronous satellites. At closest approach, Sept. 7th at 18:18 UTC, the 20-meter-wide space rock will pass just 40,000 km over New Zealand. This diagram from NASA shows the geometry of the encounter:

There is no danger of a collision with Earth.

Asteroid 2014 RC was discovered on the night of August 31 by the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona, and independently detected the next night by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope, located on the summit of Haleakalā on Maui, Hawaii.  Follow-up observations quickly confirmed the orbit of 2014 RC: it comes from just beyond the orbit of Mars.

The close appproach of this space rock offers researchers an opportunity for point-blank studies of a near-Earth asteroid. Even amateur astronomers will be able to track it. Around the time of closest approach, it will brighten to magnitude +11.5 as it zips through the constellation Pisces. This means it will be invisible to the naked eye but a relatively easy target for backyard telescopes equipped with CCD cameras

Assault on Common Core Keeps Coming: Research Called Into Question, Content Found Lacking

As the school year begins, Common Core standards and tests are taking a beating in education research, while public support for the standards continues to plummet.

The standards have been promoted as “research and evidence-based.” National Review reports, however, that a Common Core validation committee member said, “It was pretty clear from the start that nobody thought there was sufficient evidence for any of the standards.”

While the expert depicted the process as “inclusive” of various opinions, they noted that this alone does not meet the bar to constitute “sufficient research evidence.”

This committee member was not alone in his observations. Two UC Santa Barbara professors, Lorraine M. McDonnell and M. Stephen Weatherford, argued in a 2013 paper that Common Core’s producers were well aware of their research’s shortcomings: “They chose to downplay them because they would complicate the agenda at a time when a policy window was opening but might not be open for long.”

Last week, Jason Richwine at National Review Online delved into a compendium of Common Research, and identified just two papers out of 60 that presented research on the standards’ effect on test scores. The studies were tenuous at best and openly admitted the narrow nature of their findings.

In addition to the research behind the supposed benefits of imposing nationwide standards, Common Core’s suggested content is also under scrutiny. Supporters argue that suggested content in Common Core is irrelevant, since the standards allow schools to choose their own curricula. But opponents contend that the new standards and the tests created for them will inevitably shape a national curriculum.

A new study, authored in part by Sandra Stotsky, one of the only validation committee members who refused to sign off on the standards, attacks Common Core’s approach to U.S. history.

Stotsky said that the Common Core program “dramatically reduces the amount of classic American literature and poetry students will read in favor of non-fiction or so-called ‘informational texts.’”

Common Core authors also call for reading historical documents out of context to encourage an unbiased reading. Stotsky’s study vigorously disagrees with this approach, which it characterizes as an attempt to “shoehorn little bits and pieces of decontextualized U.S. history texts.”

Meanwhile, one historic anti-Common Core vote has been reversed: A Florida school board revoked its decision to opt out of Common Core-aligned testing Tuesday. After the initial decision to dump the tests, school officials lashed out at the vote and insisted it would wreak havoc on the school system.

Anti-Common Core parents at both the original vote and at Tuesday’s meeting attended dressed in red to signify their protest. After the testing was reinstated, one parent declared, “8:30 in the morning, I’m looking at a room full of red. They will not be deterred.”

Since 45 states adopted the standards in 2011, enticed by the promise of federal Race to the Top funds, five states with conservative governors have repealed the standards or instituted a review of them.

NaturalNews) On March 24 of this year, I wrote a story entitled Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 now clearly a government cover-up: All evidence contradicts official story.

In that story, I wrote:

…it now seems increasingly likely that the Flight 370 aircraft has, indeed, been delivered to a rogue nation where it is being transformed into a weapon. Whoever took control of Flight 370 now has a massive stealth weapon which an incredibly long flight range. This aircraft can now be outfitted with nuclear weapons and dispatched to almost any desirable target anywhere in the world, including cities like New York and Washington D.C., unfortunately.

Today, U.S. intelligence officials repeated my warning almost word for word.

As Bill Gertz of the Free Beacon is now reporting, 11 commercial airliners have gone missing in Tripoli, and U.S. intelligence officials are now openly warning that those jets could be weaponized to launch terrorism attack on U.S. cities.

“…western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa,” reports the Free Beacon. “Intelligence reports …included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.

Read that again and you will see that the military intelligence warning is almost a word-for-word description of what I wrote here on Natural News over five months ago, including the exact sequence and names of two U.S. cities.

When I first wrote my story earlier this year, I remember being criticized for suggesting such “wild conspiracy theories.” (Only incredibly stupid people use the phrase “conspiracy theory” as a flippant condemnation because, of course, all terrorist attacks are conspiracies by definition.)

As Natural News readers have since learned, a huge number of things I write about here on Natural News are months or years ahead of their time. They sometimes seem strange or unusual at first glance, but more often than not they turn out to be very credible and almost prophetic.

Intelligence officials are concerned about jetliner attacks on 9/11

“The official said the aircraft are a serious counterterrorism concern because reports of terrorist control over the Libyan airliners come three weeks before the 13th anniversary of 9/11 attacks and the second anniversary of the Libyan terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi,” reports the Free Beacon.

There are numerous ways in which a commercial aircraft could be outfitted with weapons and launched against major U.S. cities. I will not detail them here for obvious reasons, but as a qualified aircraft pilot and a high-IQ laboratory director, I can immediately think of at least five specific airborne threat tactics which the U.S. needs to defend against. I hope they’ve thought of them all and are taking necessary precautions. Although in all seriousness, there are some attack scenarios which are virtually impossible to stop.

Aircraft squawk identifiers, for example, can easily be spoofed. That’s not any sort of top secret information: every qualified pilot knows this. In nearly all aircraft, in fact, the pilot simply types in whatever squawk code he wants. It’s a four-digit code, and “1200” is a generic VFR squawk code used by hundreds of general aviation aircraft on any given day. Unfortunately, an inbound jetliner with evil intent could quite readily request traffic vectors for a large U.S. airport and actually be guided right into the final approach glide slope by air traffic control.

I’m not sure there are any security measures in place to detect terror intentions in time to stop the aircraft from deploying weapons above U.S. cities. I do know the U.S. military will scramble fighter jets to escort suspicious aircraft, but even their engagement protocols might actually make things worse in some circumstance. For example, what if the commercial jet is loaded with “dirty bomb” radioactive waste material? Shooting down the jet would only cause those materials to be dispersed into the air, potentially worsening the incident rather than de-escalating it.

As U.S. intelligence authorities no doubt realize, if a flight crew of terrorists is willing to die in order to deliver their weapons, there is not much which can be done to stop them. You can’t force an aircraft to land unless you physically shoot out the engines, in which case you are risking a massive explosion of the entire aircraft and whatever might be onboard. Shooting out the engines, after all, will often result in a fiery explosion for the simple reason that all the jet fuel is stored in the wings. And those wings aren’t bulletproof. At best, the U.S. military might hope to shoot down an enemy aircraft over a relatively uninhabited area, but such outcomes necessitate early detection and confirmation of the threat.

MH370 plus 11 more commercial jets are now missing

So what we have now is a grand total of 12 large commercial aircraft that have gone missing (that’s MH370 plus 11 more that have gone missing from Tripoli). We have terrorist organizations around the world that are openly seeking to destroy America. On top of that, certain nations and terror groups obviously have easy access to weapons materials from several different fronts (biological, chemical, nuclear, etc.).

Senior military intelligence believes U.S. cities might be targeted by these weaponized aircraft on September 11. I don’t think they have any specific intelligence claiming such attacks will take place, but they recognize the threat (as do I). With twelve jets, twelve U.S. cities could be simultaneously targeted by whatever weapons of mass destruction the terrorists can come up with. If only half of those attacks made it through, a six-city attack would still be absolutely devastating to America (which is what the terrorists want).

Because of flight path proximity, the most likely cities to be targeted by terrorists flying commercial jets would reside on the East Coast of the United States. Therefore, it’s only logical to conclude that the most likely city targets would include New York, Washington D.C., Boston, Miami, Philadelphia and so on.

Be careful on 9/11

Whatever your plans for the next couple of weeks, be cautious on 9/11. This is a date on which terrorists wish to strike America because of the psychological impact of the date. Striking on precisely 9/11 sends a message that the United States can’t even stop terrorists on the most likely day of terror.

Hopefully nothing bad will happen on 9/11, and I’m not trying to scare anyone away from existing plans. But if you have a choice, you might be wise to consider staying out of East Coast cities on that day, just in case.

Or, if you really have to be in the city, double check your own preparedness supplies. Do you have potassium iodide or iodine supplies in case of nuclear terrorism? Do you have a face mask in case of chemical or biological terrorism? Do you have food, water and medicine supplies at home? These are wise things to keep prepared at all times — but especially so when the likelihood of a terrorism attack is heightened for any reason.

Right now, you’ve got about a week to get prepared before 9/11, just in case. I’m not suggesting anyone panic, but right now would be a good time to double check your preparedness lists and make plans to go out and acquire anything you’re missing before the coming weekend.

Stay safe by staying prepared for all emergencies

Personally, I believe it is only a matter of time before a large U.S. city is hit with a devastating terrorism weapon. I hope and pray such violence never takes place, but I also know that there are horrendously evil people (and nations) in our world, and I know that America has many enemies which are trying to destroy her.

I am sending extra prayers to all the crew aboard America’s nuclear sub fleet, because those subs stand as the last-ditch defense against global nuclear war. The very fact that we have stealth subs cruising around the oceans, carrying nuclear-tipped ICBMs, is a powerful deterrent to America’s enemies. And if we didn’t have those subs, we would be in a far worse strategic situation right now. As a person who is “anti war,” I am also strongly “pro nuclear submarines” because it is those subs that help prevent wars from taking place by forcing America’s enemies to consider the devastating cost of retaliation.

Stay safe, everybody. The idea of 12 missing commercial airliners in the hands of terror groups who hate America should be more than enough cause for you to double check your preparedness plans before 9/11.

Astrology: Chiron Symbolism

The moon is void of course this morning and will be entering Sagittarius shortly, where it will then be applying to make the 1st quarter Moon by tomorrow morning.

The sun is meanwhile applying to oppose Chiron this week. Since I rarely mention Chiron it might be a good day to discuss the chirotic archetype.

It’s good to know a few basic things about the story of Chiron…

Chiron was a centaur and a masterful healer and teacher of the healing arts (including astrology!). Centaurs were wild and often unpredictable creatures, half man and half horse, and mostly ruled by their lower halves (though there were also highly civilized centaurs..they were rare!). Centaurs were known to crash parties, and to be completely unruly savages. Chiron stood out among them because of his birth…he was an immortal, given his horse half by his father Cronos (Saturn).

As the story goes, Chiron was accidentally wounded during a fight between the centaurs and one of his students, Heracles. The fight was caused in large part because of alcohol (wine). Though Chiron had nothing to do with the fight, he was accidentally wounded in the thigh by one of Heracles poisoned arrows (which had venomous blood from the hydra on the tip). Injured by his own student with a mortal poison, Chiron was suddenly in a precarious position….he would now have to live forever (immortal) with an incurable suffering (the mortal poison of the hydra).

Chiron decides that he will offer himself up in the place of Prometheus and trade his immortality for Prometheus’ life. Prometheus (for those who don’t know the story) had been chained by the gods to the side of a cliff for stealing the fire of the gods on behalf of humanity. The gods agree to Chiron’s offer, and after Prometheus is set free they also decide to release Chiron into the heavens and make him into a constellation (an important signal for all astrologers!).

At the heart of this story is an incredible teaching that gets lost with all the hype about the phrase “wounded healer.” This phrase should be put onto the temporary “ban list” of astrological jargon. Because the real message of this story is about chaos versus reason, about guilt and innocence by association, and the division between the gods and humanity or between mortality and immortality.

First Chiron is a centaur. He belongs to a class of half men and half animals. They are unpredictable…sometimes highly civilized, and other times, especially around alcohol, highly volatile. Like the image of the centaur in the Sagittarius constellation, centaurs are an image of the basic human dilemma…the primitive qualities of instinct, hunger, and the death and sex drive (the libido we might say), versus the “higher” rational faculties. The Sagittarian dilemma is almost always about the desire to expand and evolve “upward” against the lower aspects of animal nature…hence the Sagittarian relationship to religion, higher philosophy, and travel, as well as the classic Sagittarian hedonism or “party animal” side. Chiron is an immortal in the centaurs midst…we might say he is somewhat “above” the classic daily dilemmas of centaurs. And yet, once wine is involved (the classic centaur downfall) and the other centaurs go bananas, Chiron is accidentally wounded. He is brought “down” by their comparative “lower” qualities. It doesn’t seem fair at all. And in fact, it’s his own student that ignorantly shot him (can we see the symbolic resonance with the Gospel stories here?!). Doubly unfair!

But here’s the thing about “fairness.” Life isn’t always fair. Not even to the gods. And all this talk about wounded healing doesn’t mean much unless we can grasp this part of the myth. LIfe isn’t always fair…not even for the gods.

Prometheus is another great example of the unfairness of life. By all accounts he thought it was “unfair” that the gods should have higher knowledge (fire) and the humans should be left out in the dark. So he steals the fire and brings it to the people, but he’s punished by the gods as a result. Prometheus is therefore the perfect mythic character for Chiron to take the place of, specifically because Prometheus is a human who didn’t believe it was fair that the gods were “higher up” than the humans, while Chiron, an immortal and a god, is someone who needs something that only a human like Prometheus has….the ability and willingness to die for something “higher” than himself.

The message of the story of Chiron, who is placed into the sky as a constellation after trading his godhood for Prometheus’ life, is again that life is not first and foremost about fairness. Nor is it as simple as humans striving toward the perfection of the gods. We learn by Chiron’s situation that there is something about mortality, something about the “poison of the hydra” (an image of deep humanity), that can set even a god free from the burdens of his immortality (normally THE coveted prize!).

This story isn’t working on us unless it offends something of our higher sensibilities…unless it squashes something of our spiritual ambition, points to an all together human place that nags on painfully…a place we keep trying to fix, evolve, or enlighten…

With Chiron its this exact spot…this point where we feel most flawed, truly “less than” some image of the gods, that we have to start imagining as the entry point for what the gods most desire.

A quick example: I have Chiron in Taurus, right on my ascendant. For me it’s always been the feeling that my concern with how I look, physically, appearance wise, and whether or not I have a socially pleasing (Venus ruled) persona is a kind of lesser or lower quality about me…like my desire to look and appear pleasing is a tremendous curse or vanity that I simply can’t get rid of…

I once had an ayahuasca ceremony where I had a visionary experience with Chiron in Taurus on my Ascendant…the gist of the message was pretty simple: this is something you’re not going to change about yourself. You’ll find more peace if you accept it and then do your best to look and appear socially pleasing. The nagging feeling that you ARENT these things (that you aren’t socially/physically pleasing) won’t necessarily go away, nor will your feeling that you should not be preoccupied with such subjects…but your sense of humor about all of this will grow, your ability to suffer the suffering of it with more creativity will grow, and you’ll naturally help others to deal with the same complex situation.

This is what we astrologers mean by “wounded healer,” I think. It’s not that you’re MORE special because of your suffering, or not that you first must suffer before you become some kind of enlightened being. No. We need to let this kind of jibber jabber go. Wounded healing is a phrase that implies paradox. There is something about you that is NOT as high as it should be…and yet it’s in exactly this “lower” place that the GODS need something from you. In truth, the gods need and want to care about things like social and physical appearance. In truth the gods need vanity and recklessness and all our other “lower animal” faults. We’re so quick to say, “it’s the heart that matters, not what’s on the outside.” But this cliche misses the Chirotic mark (which looks like a skeleton key, by the way!). For Chiron there is nothing under the human sun that may not be necessary or valuable for the sake of the healing of the gods or for the god/human relationship. We’re always so quick to think it’s about the healing of the humans TOWARD the divine or TOWARD the gods. Chiron is a fantastic reminder, a revolution in the field of archetypal awareness, that the healing can flow in reverse. The gods frequently go “lower” in order to get something they need for the sake of their own healing, or release. Chiron’s death creates a NEW archetypal awareness…in much the same way the death and resurrection of Christ in the gospel stories creates a new religious paradigm…not of final “divine” redemption for humans from their “sins,” (too bad its been twisted that way! just like the ‘wounded healer’ twisting of Chiron!) but of the death of a god whose healing could only come through human mortality, chaos, and complexity. The real gospel message is that a sickly god was healed through an entirely human situation, including a brutal human death. That same god, resurrected like Chiron, becomes a new myth that goes directly into the stars….in fact the birth of the highly chirotic Jesus was heralded by eastern astrologers who followed a “star” to his birth place.

To close…as the Sun moves to oppose Chiron this week, look at your life and look at where you feel most “human,” most lowly, most in need of some “higher” quality. Imagine that it’s in this exact place that a wounded GOD is receiving a HUMAN healing. I know for me, and I suspect for many people, this sickly god is rather Christian in nature. Regardless, how can we allow this sickly god to receive its human healing…no longer fighting so intensely with this aspect of our humanity?

Prayer: Help me to reconcile the god in me to the humanity in me. Not through some kind of hedonistic extreme, but through a gentle, persistent, good humored and imaginative acceptance of all that resides in the depths of my soul.

People Looking Like Their Pets

Why do people look like their pets? It’s in the eyes.

A recent study finds that people can pair pet owners with their dogs simply by looking at photos of their eyes, but scientists aren’t sure how we’re able to do this.

If you were provided with photos of a random set of people, as well as separate photos of those people’s dogs, chances are, you could match up the right person with their pet.
How? Scientists think it has something to do with the eyes — they’re just not sure what exactly that something is.
Sadahiko Nakajima, a psychologist at Japan’s Kwansei Gakuin University, has been trying to figure out how people are able to match pets with their owners at a rate greater than chance could account for.
He considered the obvious: Maybe men are simply more likely to own large breed dogs. Perhaps women with long hair are more likely to have dogs with long, floppy ears.
However, even when experiments are designed to exclude these superficial characteristics, people are still able to match strangers with the correct pets.
In a 2009 study, Nakajima found that participants could not only match photos of pet owners with their dogs by facial appearance alone, but they could also recognize which randomly paired dog-and-owner photos were fake.
This clued Nakajima in that something about facial appearances was giving participants hints at which dog belonged to which person, so he designed an experiment to determine what part of the face was responsible.
He created test sheets that each included 20 sets of dog-human pairs. One sheet featured actual dog-human pairs while the other had randomly matched pairs.
dogs look like owners experimentThe photos were basic headshots cropped at the shoulders, and the photos sets included an equal number of male and female owners, as well as a variety of dog breeds.
The 502 Japanese undergraduate students who participated in the study were randomly assigned to one of five different groups. Each group received test sheets that had been “masked” in a different way.
In one, the humans’ eyes were covered, and in another, the dogs’ eyes were. One also showed only both the dogs’ and humans’ eyes, while another covered their mouths.
The control group received photos that showed the full faces of the humans and the dogs.
Those who saw the unobstructed faces were quite good at determining which human-dog pairs were fake, and 80 percent were able to select the real-life human-dog pairs.
The group that received the photos with concealed mouths were also fairly good with 73 percent making the correct matches.
However, when the humans’ eyes or dogs’ eyes were covered, participants’ ability to select the right human-dog pairs fell to statistically chance levels.
But those in the eye-only group proved to be almost as good as selecting the real-life human-dog pairs as those who viewed the unobstructed faces. Seventy-four percent chose the correct pairs by looking at the eyes alone.
This finding was so surprising that Nakajima duplicated the study with an entirely new batch of participants and this time, 76 percent picked the right pairs.
As Nakajima notes in the study, because all the human models were Asian, they all had similar dark-colored eyes, so there must be something else — some shared look — that clues people in to what dog belongs to which person.
He’s not sure what it is about the eyes that communicates a shared bond, but this isn’t the first study that’s found people are able to extract psychological cues from the eyes.
In fact, a 2009 Tufts University study found that participants were able to discern a stranger’s sexual orientation simply from looking at photos of people’s eyes.

After the mummified remains of a beautifully adorned, 5th-century BC woman were discovered in Siberia’s Altai Mountains in 1993, the find was heralded as “one of the most significant archeological discoveries at the close of the 20th century.” But recent earthquakes and floods in the region have locals believing that removing the ice princess from her pallid slumber may have angered her, as well as opened some kind of ghastly gate to the underworld, reports the Daily Mail.
The superstition has garnered so much momentum that the Council of Elders in Altai, a group representing native Siberians in the region, has passed a vote to rebury the mummy’s remains, a decision apparently accepted by local governor Alexander Berdnikov. A ban has already been imposed on further archeological digs in other burial mounds in the area.
The irrational fervor comes at the heels of recent flooding — the worst seen in over 50 years — and earthquakes that have imperiled the region. According to the local Altai peoples, who are not genetically related to the mummy (also known as Ooch-Bala), the purpose of the elaborately decorated corpse in her burial chamber was “to bar the entrance to the kingdom of the dead.” Now that she has been removed, an entrance to the underworld has been left open.
“Naked and defenseless, Ooch-Bala is freezing from inexplicable shame,” claimed campaigners. “Who puts the naked corpse of their mother on public display? She knocks into our heart, seeking compassion. She is cold from evil indifference.”
Aside from objecting to the mummy’s original exhumation, the native people in Altai also objected to plans to display her in a glass sarcophagus in a museum within the city of Gorno-Altaisk.
The mummy, also known as Princess Ukok or the Siberian Ice Maiden, is particularly significant because of the highly artistic tattoos that adorn her body, which reveals much about her ancient culture.
“Compared to all tattoos found by archeologists around the world, those on the mummies of the Pazyryk people are the most complicated, and the most beautiful,” said Natalia Polosmak, the researcher who originally excavated the mummy. “More ancient tattoos have been found, like the Ice Man found in the Alps — but he only had lines, not the perfect and highly artistic images one can see on the bodies of the Pazyryks.”
Princess Ukok’s tattoos include fantastical mythological animals like a deer with a griffon’s beak, a Capricorn’s antlers that are decorated with the heads of griffons, and a spotted panther with a long tail and the legs of a sheep. She was also buried with six horses, saddled and bridled — possibly representing her spiritual escorts to the next world. The elaborate burial is likely a symbol of her high status, possibly as a folk tale narrator, a healer or a holy woman.
The museum is reluctant to give in to the superstition that these remains are infected with a mummy’s curse, but it seems likely that this beautiful mummy will eventually be reburied, left to decay in the permafrost.

A pilot and his co-pilot have spotted a mysterious orange and red glow over the Pacific Ocean.

The strange lights were spotted south of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka during the flight of a Boeing 747-8 from Hong Kong to Anchorage, Alaska.

And while no explanation has yet been given, it’s thought that they may have originated from the explosion of a huge volcano under the surface of the ocean.

WHAT CAUSED THIS MYSTERY GLOW?

After the initial vertical lightning bolt it was thought the phenomenon could have been a thunderstorm, but that was ruled out when none were reported in the area.

The predominant theory at the moment is that the lights were caused by an underwater volcano.

Such eruptions are not unprecedented; on 21 November 2013 an submarine volcano famously created a new ‘island’ off the coast of Japan.

Another explanation is they were caused by lights from fishing boats.

Last week astronaut Reid Riseman was left baffled by a similarly bizarre green flurry of lights (shown below) off the coast of Bangkok.

It is thought those lights were in fact created by fishing boats. The offshore illumination comes from enormous arrays of bright green LED lights used to attract squid and other sea life to the surface.

However that explanation has been ruled out for the latest mystery glow, as more than 50 boats would be needed to produce light of this magnitude – but no fleet of fishing boats was thought to be operating in the area.

Dutch pilot JPC van Heijst explained on PBase how, five hours into the ten-hour flight, they spotted an intense flash of light like a lightning bolt, directed vertically up in the distance.

This was then followed by a deep red and orange glow 20 minutes later.

And the experience left van Heijst somewhat perturbed, owing to the lack of an explanation for what happened.

‘Last night over the Pacific Ocean, somewhere South of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka I experienced the creepiest thing so far in my flying career,’ he said.

There were no thunderstorms on their route or weather-radar, suggesting the lightning did not originate in a storm.

The glow is also a mystery; similar lights have been spotted from squid-fishing-boats, but van Heijst says this ‘would not make sense in this area’.

‘The closer we got, the more intense the glow became, illuminating the clouds and sky below us in a scary orange glow, in a part of the world where there was supposed to be nothing but water,’ he continued.

‘The only cause of this red glow that we could think of, was the explosion of a huge volcano just underneath the surface of the ocean, about 30 minutes before we overflew that exact position.’

He was then nervous of encountering an ash-plume in the middle of the night, but fortunately they did not encounter anything of the sort.

Before the flight they had heard via radio about earthquakes in Iceland, Chile and San Francisco.

But despite their being a few volcanoes on their route, they had had not been alerted to any new activity – although this doesn’t necessarily include unseen underwater volcanoes.

Together with his co-pilot van Heijst says they felt ‘everything but comfortable’, while no other aircraft were nearby to confirm the sighting.

‘We reported our observations to Air Traffic Control and an investigation into what happened in this remote region of the ocean is now started,’ he added.

‘Now I’m just hoping that if a new island has been formed there [from the eruption], at least it can be named after me as the official discoverer.

‘That would be pretty cool!’

Re-seasoning Rusty Cast Iron Pans

Sandblasting? Steel wool, wire wheel, potato? Seasoning? Yep, it all works.

Here’s an article using a potato:

What You Need

Materials
The end chunk of a potato (enough to be able to hold firmly)
Course salt
A rusty cast iron skillet
A little vegetable oil (canola or olive will do)

Equipment
Gloves (optional, but recommended)

Instructions

1. Place your rusty skillet in the sink and sprinkle a couple tablespoons of salt into it.

2. Take your chunk of potato and start scrubbing. The moisture from the potato will be enough to help the salt dig in to the rust.

3. The salt will get dirty very quickly. You may choose to rinse out the pan to survey your progress. If there is still rust, add more salt and repeat Step 2.

4. Continue to the sides, edges, bottom and handle of your pan.

5. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

6. Place pan on stove burner, this will help dry any remaining moisture.

7. Once dry, put a small amount of vegetable oil in the pan and rub it in with a paper towel.

8. Keep pan over low heat for at least 30 minutes.

9. Let skillet cool. Make sure to wipe off any excess oil before storing your skillet. If you leave extra oil in the pan it can turn rancid.

10. Every time you use your pan, after you’ve cleaned it (I never use soap, but that’s up to you), put the pan on a low burner and repeat the oil and paper towel step. It’s best to store your pan in the oven, but it worked much better when stoves had pilot lights that stayed on (thus keeping ambient moisture away from your pans).
