Massive (scary) Alaskan earthquake in an unpopulated area

Last update: June 24, 2011 at 10:26 am by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell 2 Comments

Earthquake summary : A terrifying strong earthquake occurred at 6:09 PM near the remote Alaskan Aleutian Islands.  The epicenter of the earthquake was on top of the subduction slope. The energy of this massive earthquake was weakened due to the depth of the epicenter. There was never a widespread Tsunami danger for this earthquake. To read the full story as it happened, we advise our readers to start at the bottom of the page (earthquake data) and to continue going up.

UPDATE 08:45 UTC : We thought it may be interesting for our readers to show how the Alaskan plate tectonics work. The star is the epicenter of the earthquake. Map screen shot courtesy Google Earth.
The Pacific plate is subducting the North American plate by 70 to 80 mm a year!!

IPSO Predicts Large Extinction of Marine Life

Solutions

MULTIPLE OCEAN STRESSES THREATEN “GLOBALLY SIGNIFICANT” MARINE EXTINCTION

A high-level international workshop convened by IPSO met at the University of Oxford earlier this year. It was the first inter-disciplinary international meeting of marine scientists of its kind and was designed to consider the cumulative impact of multiple stressors on the ocean, including warming, acidification, and overfishing.

The 3 day workshop, co-sponsored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), looked at the latest science across different disciplines.

The 27 participants from 18 organisations in 6 countries produced a grave assessment of current threats — and a stark conclusion about future risks to marine and human life if the current trajectory of damage continues: that the world’s ocean is at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history.

Pneumonia jabs for the over-65s are to be scrapped by the Government because they do not save lives.

Millions of pensioners have been vaccinated with a one-off jab that was supposed to give ten-year protection against an infection that causes pneumonia.

GMO’s in the Rice Field

Genetically Engineered Rice is a Trojan Horse: Misled by Bill Gates and Monsanto

genetically modified riceThe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has approved $20 million in new monies toward the development of “golden rice” — an untested, highly controversial GE (genetically engineered) crop that threatens biodiversity and risks bringing economic and ecological disaster to Asia’s farms.

The leader of the Golden Rice project is Gerald Barry, previously director of research at Monsanto.

Sarojeni V. Rengam, executive director of Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), has called the rice a “Trojan horse.” According to Rengam, the rice is “… a public relations stunt pulled by the agri-business corporations to garner acceptance of GE crops and food. The whole idea of GE seeds is to make money.”

Eye Compass?

21 June 2011 Last updated at 11:35 ET

Fruit fly scanning electron micrographThe cryptochrome protein comes in more than one type – and the human one can perform as the fly’s

A light-sensitive protein in the human eye has been shown to act as a “compass” in a magnetic field, when it is present in flies’ eyes.

The study in Nature Communications showed that without their natural “magnetoreception” protein, the flies did not respond to a magnetic field – but replacing the protein with the human version restored the ability.

Despite much controversy, no conclusive evidence exists that humans can sense the Earth’s magnetic field, and the find may revive interest in the idea.

Although humans, like migratory birds, are known to have cryptochrome in their eyes, the idea of human magnetoreception has remained largely unexplored since pioneering experiments by Robin Baker of the University of Manchester in the 1980s.
