As a laser physicist with forty years experience in psychic research, I am convinced that most people can learn to move from their ordinary, ego-based mind-set to a much more interesting perspective—one that is not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Eighth-century Buddhists understood this meditative skill as moving from conditioned awareness to spacious or naked awareness. . .  this skill . . . what we in the twenty-first century call remote viewing . . . is about learning how to quiet your mind and to separate the visual images of the psychic signal from the uncontrolled chatter of the mind.

Seeing and Thinking Nonlocally

My firm conclusion from decades of ESP research is that we significantly misapprehend the physical and psychological nature of the interconnected space-time in which we live. As I sit on my deck in Portola Valley looking out across San Francisco Bay, I feel that I can reliably experience the beautiful and spacious scene before me. But on reflection, I realize that this conviction is unfortunately based on neither a complete perception nor a correct understanding of what I am viewing. The internalized perception of nature before me is created, obstructed, and obscured by mental noise.

Mental noise is the ongoing chatter in our mind, together with our desire to name and concretize everything we see or experience. The great psychic Ingo Swann calls this noise analytical overlay (AOL) and says it comprises memory, imagination, and analysis—all of which we use to color and reconfigure our sights and experiences. The idea is that we give everything we experience all the meaning it has for us. Our assumption is that the outer world has no meaning inherent to itself. This illusion is what Buddhists call maya or samsara—and it can cause a lot of unnecessary suffering.

Remote viewing is not a spiritual path. However, living in a spacious and interconnected world such as I’m describing, one tends to be more open and compassionate than in a state of mind that is isolated and insulated. In exploring what physicists call our nonlocal universe, we begin to feel that the Buddhists have it right when they say again and again that “separation is an illusion,” that all is connected.

In this world of entangled or extended minds, compassion seems to me to be a natural conclusion. It’s an idea whose time has come—teaching that when one person suffers, we all suffer—because the data show that our minds are frequently telepathically connected to one another. And today, there are more than two million Google pages devoted to information about “remote viewing,” so at least some people are catching on to the idea that it is not difficult to do.

When I was first working on the development of the laser, about fifty years ago, I read a well-known psychology text that dealt briefly with psychic abilities, which was already a passionate interest of mine. The book was called Human Behavior: An Inventory of Scientific Findings. With regard to my favorite subject, it said:

The state of research in parapsychology can be summarized as follows: A small number of investigators, roughly thirty or forty, who have done a large number of studies are convinced that there is such a thing as extrasensory perception (telepathy, clairvoyance, etc). Whereas, the majority of psychologists, most of whom have not studied the subject, are not convinced [emphasis mine].1

When I first read this analysis, I thought it was some kind of sardonic joke. But unfortunately, it still pretty well represents the view of much of the contemporary scientific community with regard to psychic abilities . . . Some people like to read about miracles. Others prefer double-blind, published experiments showing at least five standard deviations from chance expectation (meaning that a particular event would happen by chance less often than one time in a million). I am offering here a manifesto from my personal experience with both kinds of evidence for ESP, based on two decades of government-supported investigations at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). I cofounded this program with laser physicist Dr. Harold Puthoff in 1972.

I believe in ESP because I have seen psychic miracles day after day in our government-sponsored investigations. It is clear to me, without any doubt, that many people can learn to look into the distance and into the future with great accuracy and reliability. This is what I call unobstructed awareness orremote viewing (RV). To varying degrees, we all have this spacious ability. I do not believe that ESP has metaphysical origins. I believe that it is just a kind of ability we strengthen by expanding our awareness to think nonlocally. It will become less mysterious as more of us become more skillful.

For example, while working for the CIA program at our lab in Menlo Park, California, our psychic viewers were able to find a downed Russian bomber in Africa, to describe the health of American hostages in Iran, and to locate a kidnapped American general in Italy. We also described Soviet weapons factories in Siberia and a Chinese atomic-bomb test three days before it occurred and performed countless other amazing tasks—all using the ability that our colleague Ingo Swann dubbed remote viewing.

An Accumulation of Evidence

There are presently four classes of published and carefully examined ESP experiments that are independently significant, with a probability of chance occurrence of less than one time in a million.

1. Remote Viewing. Princeton University Professor Robert Jahn (Dean of Engineering) and his associate Brenda Dunn oversaw two decades of remote-viewing experiments with Princeton students as subjects. Students in the laboratory were asked to describe their mental impressions of what they saw at a site where someone was hiding at a randomly chosen distant location. “These remote-viewing students had to fill out a thirty-item questionnaire to quantify their perceptions in this game of psychic hide-and-go-seek. Their findings—spanning several years and comprising a series of 411 trials—showed that it is no harder to remote view hundreds of miles in the distance than it is to describe a person around the corner. Furthermore, it is no harder to describe a randomly chosen hiding place to be selected in the next hour, day, or week than it is to describe a hidden event underway at the same moment. Modern physics would describe these phenomena as nonlocal, in that they are experimentally found to be independent of space and time. Nonlocality and entanglement, which were first described by Erwin Schrödinger in the late 1920s, are now hot research topics in modern physics. This intriguing phenomenon is explained very clearly and amusingly by Anton Zeilinger, one of the world’s leading experimentalists in quantum optics, in his 2010 book Dance of the Photons: From Einstein to Teleportation. Zeilinger writes:

Entanglement describes the phenomenon that two particles may be so intimately connected to each other that the measurement of one instantly changes the quantum state of the other, no matter how far away it may be . . . this nonlocality is exactly what Albert Einstein called “spooky”; it seems eerie that the act of measuring one particle could instantly influence the other one.2

Robert Jahn’s highly significant results were published in the Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1982 as a replication of our original SRI remote-viewing experiments published in the same journal six years earlier.3 These data show odds greater than a billion to one (1.8 x 10-11) against chance expectation—strong evidence for the existence of nonlocal mind.

2. Distant Mental Influence. In the 1970s and 1980s, William Braud and Marilyn Schlitz carried out nineteen successful experiments in what they called Distant Mental Influence on Living Systems (DMILS).4 In these experiments, a precursor to other distant-healing experiments supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the researchers showed convincingly that the thoughts of one person can affect the physiology (heart rate, skin resistance, etc.) of a distant person in another laboratory. Braud was able psychically to calm or excite the physiology of a person hundreds of feet away. Marilyn Schlitz is now the president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California. Braud, who is now teaching at the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) in Palo Alto, California, has published twelve of his highly significant formal experiments in an excellent book called Distant Mental Influence.5

3. The Ganzfeld. Over a span of thirty years, several researchers at five different laboratories here and abroad carried out telepathy experiments in which one person was in a situation of sensory isolation called ganzfeld, which is German for “whole field isolation.” This person was asked to describe his or her ongoing mental impressions of an interesting video clip being watched by a friend in a separate part of the lab. In a published meta-analysis of seventy-nine studies comprising hundreds of individual trials, the probability that the results of the experiments were chance was almost one in a billion (2 x 10-8), meaning that the isolated receiver was extraordinarily successful in describing what his distant friend was seeing.6

4. Feeling the Future. Recently, Professor Daryl Bem at Cornell University carried out a series of nine precognition experiments. In this remarkable five-year study, he showed that the future can affect the past in surprising ways. That is, the elephant you see on television in the morning can be the cause of your having dreamed about elephants the previous night: Saturday morning’s elephant caused Friday’s dream. We call that phenomenon retrocausality. For example, students in Bem’s experiments reliably favor and choose one of four possible pictures of people, even though they are shown that one only after they have made their conscious choice and even though the one shown has been randomly selected only after the students have chosen.

In 2010, Bem’s sixty-page paper presenting his meta-analysis of these retrocausal experiments was accepted for publication.7 This meta-analysis [which generated a firestorm of debate as reported by IONS’ Dean Radin and Cassandra Vieten] shows a statistical significance of more than six standard deviations from chance expectation (1.3 x 10-11), which equals odds of more than a billion to one against chance. I am entirely convinced by this analysis—and so is distinguished statistics professor Jessica Utts from the University of California–Davis. In all his experiments, Bem’s one thousand Cornell-student participants find themselves making free choices, guided again and again by the material they will see or experience in the future—but only after they have made their selection. Many people believe that precognition is the dominant phenomenon in all psychic functioning. All of Bem’s experiments have been carried out and published since the 1962 publication of the annoying Human Behavior: Inventory of Scientific Findings that I mentioned earlier. From his recent precognition experiments at Cornell and my own successful forecasting of silver commodity markets, it appears that we have the ability to expand our perceived “now” to include as much of the future as we choose to accommodate.

Ordinary Magic

The term psi is derived from the Greek Ψ (psi), the twenty-third letter of the Greek alphabet, which means “psyche” or “soul.” Psi was coined in a parapsychological sense by biologist Bertold P. Wiesner and first used in print in 1942 by Robert Thouless. Parapsychologists prefer psi to ESP, because the termextrasensory perception implies the use of a sense that we don’t normally have—an extra sense, whereas in actuality there is nothing extra about psi, even though it is often repressed and even though, in fact, it transcends our usual ideas of the limitations posed by time and space. Psi is a gift we all have. It represents an amazing and unique opportunity for spaciousness that I am happy to share with all who will join me in this great adventure.

I had a brilliant friend named Dan Kubert, now deceased, who was a great polymath and a Harvard math professor. He was for some years a shut-in because of his poor physical health, but he would call me several times a week to chat. A year ago, he called to talk about a new proof for Fermat’s Last Theorem—the subject of a book we had both read. I told him I was sorry but I couldn’t talk with him that day because I was finishing a book I was reading for my book club. He immediately said, “That must be Anna Karenina”—a book which we had never discussed. I asked him why he named that particular book. He told me that as soon as I mentioned I was reading a book, he had a clear mental picture of the alluring Vivian Leigh as she appeared in the movie Anna Karenina. That was of course the book I was indeed reading. Dan was often startlingly psychic with regard to events in my life, both public and private. I attribute it to his very quiet lifestyle and his ability to focus his attention.

My point in telling this anecdote is that I believe each of us has the potential for vast psychic awareness that fills all of space-time. Not only do Hindu and Buddhist literature of the past two millennia describe the naturalness and availability of these abilities but also numerous laboratory experiments indicate that we have the opportunity to know anything upon which we fix our attention. In my experience and according to most other researchers, it appears that an experienced psychic can answer any question that has an answer. I cannot wait to see what the future holds when we fully open the doors of our perception!

When I say that I believe in ESP, it’s not as if I am saying that I believe in life on other planets elsewhere in the universe, which, although a statistical probability, remains unproven. Nor is it like saying that I believe in the ideal of social democracy. For in this latter case—while I affirm the desirability of freeing people from fear, poverty, and injustice and of supporting the inalienable right of all people to food, education, and health care—I am aware that many educated people seem to think otherwise. I may believe them to be profoundly mistaken, but it’s very hard to prove. To the contrary, however, when I say that I believe in ESP, it is as if I am saying that I believe in Maxwell’s equations (relating electromagnetism and light), quantum mechanics, or lasers—all of which are surprising and hard to believe but nonetheless absolutely true and scientifically provable. Indeed, the experimental evidence for ESP from a century of research is so strong and overwhelming that reasonable people simply should no longer doubt its reality. That powerful and undeniable evidence for extrasensory perception from laboratories around the world is the subject of this book.

For me, questioning reality and the exploration of psychic abilities are the essential next step in the greatest opportunity we have as a species—the evolution of consciousness.

Covering the back of South America’s waxy monkey tree frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagei) is a painkiller 40 times more powerful than morphine, and apparently, a racehorse prodder. The amphibian secretion has now shown up in the bloodstreams of 30 racehorses in four U.S. states, according to an article in the New York Times.

The substance, called dermorphin, blocks pain while increasing feelings of excitation and euphoria, all of which would prod a horse to run faster and harder despite injuries.

This isn’t the first time a useful substance has been found in frogs.

Frogs, like other amphibians, have highly permeable skin that allows them to breathe through their skin. This capability means their skin is also sensitive. As such, frogs have developed various skin secretions that kill microbes and other pathogens. These same secretions have useful human-health properties, from powerful antibiotic features to anti-cancer powers.

Since the drug can impact the outcome of horse races, the recent finding is a serious drug violation for the industry, the NYT reports.

In fact, on Saturday (June 17), stewards at Louisiana’s Delta Downs suspended quarter horse trainer Alvin Smith Jr. for six months after Dashin Forward — second-place winner in a race on May 26 — tested positive for dermorphin, according to nola.com of The Times-Picayune. The horse was disqualified and his winnings, more than $38,000, will be re-distributed.

The horse trainers or their suppliers are likely not squeezing loads of waxy frogs, and instead are likely getting their “frog juice” from synthetic creations of the substance, the NYT reports.

Figuring out the prevalence of dermorphin use in racehorses is tricky, as many states don’t even have the capability to test for it.

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game. As soon as you call out dermorphin, they will try something else. That is the daily battle that goes on,” Edward J. Martin, president of Racing Commissioners International, a trade association for racing regulators, said in the NYT article.

Cleveland Volcano in Alaska Erupting

New Eruption at Alaska’s Cleveland

Last night, I noted on Twitter that the Alaska Volcano Observatory had increased the alert status at Cleveland to Orange (from Yellow) – this came after a report that an explosive eruption had taken place. Thanks to Cleveland’s remote location, confirmation of the eruption is difficult, but pilot observation, shots from the Cleveland webcam and infrasound all suggests that an explosive eruption took place, with the pilot estimating the plume might have been as high as 10.6 km / 35,000 feet. The eruption appears to be fairly ephemeral (a standard behavior for Cleveland), as satellite images taken around the time that the pilot reported the ash plume show only thin ash around the volcano – this isn’t entirely surprising if the explosion was caused by a collapse of the dome at Cleveland’s summit.

This is pretty much all that is going on in the Aleutians right now – Iliamna, another volcano that showed some restlessness earlier this year, has settled in a pattern of low-level (yet above background) seismicity that leaves it at Yellow alert status. However, the Aleutian’s northern Pacific cousins in Kamchatka are definitely keeping busy, especially Shiveluch, where the volcano has been producing frequent ~6-8 km / 20,000- to 26,000-foot plumes.

We are now three to five generations removed from the rural backbone that strengthened America.  The world at large has undergone a similar transformation as the promise of easier work has created a migration to big cities.  These mega-cities could be seen as an experiment gone awry, as general well-being has declined, with suicide rates increasing across the world.  Crowded conditions and economic strife have led to rampant crime, pollution, corporate malfeasance, and a dog-eat-dog type of competition that can be described as a temporary insanity.

The economic crisis we are living through has been the final straw for many people, as promises of a better, easier, and more creative life seem to have been sold to us by carnival-style tricksters who are laughing all the way to (their) bank.

 

Here are the top reasons for becoming self-sufficient; these are based on fundamental, systemic concerns for why undertaking this life change will not be a fly-by-night fad, but rather a long-lasting means for personal independence.

10 Reasons to Become Self-Sufficient

  1. Freedom from market manipulation – The traditional market-driven investment vehicles are more and more obviously controlled by traders and banking institutions.  The debacle of the private Federal Reserve Bank is just the icing on the cake to a previous decade full of Ponzi-type schemes.  Now, the institutionalized looting of retirement money is being planned.
  2. Hedging against inflation – Have you noticed the price of goods lately?  Even Wal-Mart is silently raising its prices.  People might have a choice whether or not to buy stocks or gold, but people have to eat — the current increases in basic goods portend hyperinflation, and will not ease anytime soon.  Food shortages could make the problem exponentially worse.
  3. 3. Increasing health and wellness – It has now been revealed that some “organic” items have been falsely labeled.  In addition, a host of “GMO-free” brands have been exposed as deceptive.  GMO food lacks the nutritional value of what can be grown in the average backyard.  GMO mega-corporation, Monsanto, has a sordid history and has continuously trampled on our trust.  It is time that we do the work ourselves.
  4. Building community strength – We constantly hear people say, “I don’t even see my neighbors, let alone know anything about them.”  Of course not:  80-hour workweeks and grabbing meals-to-go doesn’t exactly promote community interaction.  With such little time to interact with our immediate community, it is no wonder why many people report feeling disconnected.   In these trying times, it is a local community that can offer the best support.
  5. Working for yourself – Working hours are increasing, pay is often decreasing, and corporate executives are taking bigger bonuses than ever.  This is leading to a prevailing disgust, as people are being forced to admit that they are living lives of near-indentured servitude.  Even for those not working in corporations, working for someone else is rarely as satisfying as creating and working for something where every minute you spend is yours alone.
  6. Having more free time – We have been taught to believe that life on a farm is arduous sun-up to sun-down drudgery where you collapse at the end of the day.  This is not so much the case anymore.  Sure, the setup of any farm or self-sufficient endeavor is often time-consuming and laborious, but new technologies and new skills of manufacturing food via permaculture and aquaponics are offering low-cost start up and minimal maintenance, as these techniques serve to create symbiotic systems that are remarkably self-governing.
  7. Generating food and energy security – The planet is running out of food and traditional energy. Climate volatility, market forces, GM foods, and rising costs of harvesting and transporting food are all conspiring to create food shortages even in the First World.  This trend will not reverse.  And our oil-soaked way of life is being threatened by mounting evidence that the oil lifeline could be disconnecting rather soon.  We should be looking to the air, sun, geothermal, and wave power to wean us from the energy grid.
  8. Acquiring an appreciation for life – As one gets closer to life-giving forces, there is a natural appreciation for how things come into being.  When you have created your garden, toiled there, selected the best for harvest, and have prepared that food for your family and community, the significance of what you have taken part in can be transformative.
  9. Restoring balance – Nearly everything in our society is at a peak, or is drastically out of balance.  The systems and governments to which we have looked for balance restoration are missing in action.  We must take it upon ourselves to restore our own financial and environmental balance sheet.  The best way to do that is to reduce our overconsumption.
  10. Becoming a producer, not a consumer – This is the best way to reduce your cost of living and increase your self-sufficiency.  In the U.S. over 70% of the economy is based on people buying things. This is a clear sign of imbalance and, by extension, it is not sustainable.  Furthermore, we also have seen corporations race to the bottom to find low-cost production on the backs of desperate people.  The exploitation of the Third World to clothe, feed, and entertain the First World is something that most people do not want to think about, but it is abominable. Again, new technologies are making it easier than ever to produce your own food, and even your own clothes.

As the cliche goes: Freedom is never free.  But it sure beats the alternative.

 10 Ways to Get to Self-Sufficiency

The global economic collapse has become an eye-opening experience for many people. The ongoing crisis continues to create more joblessness at a time when the cost of essential items like food and energy continue to rise.

Inflation is only expected to continue due to excessive printing of money to compensate for the bursting economic bubbles, which were arguably created by printing too much money with artificially low interest rates in the first place.

The 2008 price shocks in oil followed by the financial collapse have led many people to begin taking measures to become more self-sufficient.  And recently the ominous signs of food shortages, the weakening dollar, and the rising price of oil all point to a similar atmosphere as 2008.  Some have taken steps to conserve electricity, reduce spending and consumption, while others are planting kitchen gardens and installing solar panels on their homes.  Even living off the grid is becoming a mainstream concept for those seeking independence.

Indeed, becoming more self-sufficient is proving to make common sense whether one anticipates more hardship to come or not. Sure, many of us would love to live completely off the grid without giving up everyday comforts, but this is not practical for most of us.  However, there are many steps that can be taken to move towards self-sufficiency which can be relatively painless and quite rewarding.

The following are 10 suggestions that can lead to independent living:

  1. Reduce your debt: Especially get your credit card debt under control, since it is entirely corrupt.  Call your credit card companies and ask for a work out plan similar to what they received from the taxpayer bailout.  If they don’t cooperate to your satisfaction, there are some reasons not to pay at all.
  2. Reduce your consumption: Evaluate your current budget and determine absolute necessity. Push your comfort level to find areas where you can scale back, and then identify comforts that you’re willing to sacrifice.
  3. Reduce energy use: Change light bulbs, have entertainment systems plugged into a splitter that can be shut off completely to reduce phantom charges, etc. Carefully plan shopping trips and other transportation needs.
  4. Store energy: Always have back-up propane storage and a large wood pile for a rainy day. Investing in a generator of some kind (even a solar generator) will be money well spent.
  5. Invest in food storage: With a falling dollar and rising food prices, why not create a food savings account?  Get some good books, dehydrators and vacuum sealers for storage methods. Best storable food items are grains (rice, beans, flour), canned goods, seeds, and some prepackaged items.
  6. Produce your own food: Replace your lawn with a garden, fruit trees, and keep chickens. Go on hunting and gathering adventures for nuts, fish, and wild game.  Store extra garden seeds!
  7. Learn new skills: Surf the Internet, read books, and take courses in practical skills like gardening, cooking with whole foods, composting, carpentry, alternative energy, natural health and wellness etc.
  8. Start a side business: Turn your passion or hobby into a small side business to make some supplemental income.  Who knows, it may become your path to full financial independence.
  9. Install alternative energy: Start with small installations like a solar hot water system, a solar freezer, a solar attic fan, or a wood stove etc. If you have limited funds, tip-toe your way to independence.
  10. Suggest solutions for your community: Start or join a local cooperative for food, products, and services.  Engage your local community in discussions to take steps for self-sufficiency. Share your story and build support.

These steps will save money as we move closer to the ultimate prize of independence.  Each action we take to live more simply frees us from the control systems put in place to make our lives more complicated, more toxic, and less independent.

This was recorded as the largest quake in Victoria since the 1903 Warnambool events (Mb 5.3), however the 1969 event of Ml5.3 and 1982 event of Ml5.4 are also in the same ballpark. The Seismological research center of ES&S still has the earthquake recorded as an Ml5.5.

A number of foodstock losses will also occur at various supermarkets with many items being thrown off the shelves.

A number of houses have recorded damage in the form of cracks to walls, ceilings and in other concrete as well as other minor damage such as fallen tiles.

Still waiting for further damage reports from the ground, with at least 25 potential instances of damage being recorded at this point through the SES. VicSES has implemented a Quake safety awareness and response program “QuakeSafe” in the past few years.

Update 13:05UTC:

Residential property has sustained minor damage from the tremor. Some residential properties in Moe and some in the La Trobe Valley appeared to be the hardest hit.

“There’s been cracks in walls, damage to ceilings and windows, and possibly some building damage so far” said SES Spokesman Lachlan Quick talking to news services in Australia.

The instance of damage from further afield in Moe has brought the potential estimated damage bill to between $0.7 and 4.1 million AUD from rapid loss estimation packages but further calibration is required on the intensities from the ground before any concrete estimate can be released.

Summary 13:00UTC:
– A shallow Mb5.3 earthquake struck just after 20:53 (8:53pm) local time around the Latrobe Valley at Childers, south of Trafalgar.
– Over 35 calls have been put into the Victorian SES for assistance.
– No major damage reported as yet.
– Around 7000 people live in the VI intensity area, with many more in the V intensity area.

Update 12:56UTC: Anyone living in or near Childers with Internet access would be very much appreciated to submit a felt report. Thankyou to all Victorians for their responses – it really helps us to pinpoint the damage area!

Update 12:50UTC: Just to show the effect of this quake around 10-12 km away from the epicenter in Trafalgar – “Have experienced lighter tremors in this area before i.e. Mid Gippsland eminating in South Gippsland Region, but this was clearly the most dramatic…. Previous ones were around 4.3. Whole house shaking with this one i.e. quite violently more of a 5 or above and accompanying strange sound/noise. All the neighbours ran out into the street afterwards. Felt at first like a sudden wind”.

From Mirboo North – “Shaking and noise lasted about 20 seconds? I have never felt anything so violent in my life.”

From Moe – “Was in the car, felt like people jumping on it. Got home stuff over the floor and cupboard doors opened.”

Update 12:48UTC: For people interested in the economics of the region, East Gippsland has a $1.72 billion GDP mainly due to the manufacturing and construction industry. The area affected however, is slightly west of this area, and has a capital stock of around $65 million with less than 1% damage expected, meaning that there is likely to be less than $1 million damage at this stage based on historic statistics, if any! Trafalgar used to have a cheese factory but was closed in 1990, meaning the cruel fate seen to the cheese in Italy, will not occur here.

Update 12:44UTC:  VICSES has recieved 35 requests for assistance so far from the broader Gippsland area and parts of metropolitan Melbourne.

Update: At least 7,000 people would be within potentially damaging area. With the main towns being Yarragon (1100+), Trafalgar (2600+) and Mirboo North (2000+) within this area. The larger towns/cities of Moe-Newborough, Morwell, Yarragul and Leongatha are far enough away to have only very slight to no damage.

Update: The quake would have been felt for around 30 seconds looking at the following seismogram of the event. The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) have received 20 requests for assistance in the broader Gippsland area and parts of Melbourne. No significant damage has as such been recorded however. Mirboo North could also have sustained cracks in houses.

Update: It has also been felt at about Intensity V in Morwell. Childers is expected to have an intensity of VI or VII.

Update: The epicenter was located about 10km south of the Princes Highway, the main truck and transport route around Australia.

Update: Mb5.3 as recorded by Geoscience Australia – also SW of Moe. This will cause slight damage such as broken windows and cracking in the immediate area. It has been recorded near the village of Childers near Yarragon North. This is located south of Trafalgar. Being dark given that it is winter in Australia, it will be difficult to evaluate the damage.

It should be said that the earthquake hypocenter location has not been finalised from Geoscience Australia yet.

Update: The 1922 earthquake was the last earthquake to cause damage in Victoria with a magnitude higher. Since the 1800s, there have been at least 15 damaging earthquakes in Victoria of significance, the last being in 2009. The famous Warnambool earthquakes of 1903, and the Selwyn Fault quake of 1932 have been the most famous. – CATDAT Damaging Earthquakes Database.

Update: Ml5.5, 10km depth. Residents have recorded shaking of up to 40 seconds, with some soft soils in the area meaning shaking would have been felt longer than expected for such a magnitude.

Update: USGS has the epicenter out near Trafalgar, SW of Moe. Felt reports from Trafalgar would be appreciated.

Update: The earthquake has been given as Ml5.5 by some sources. The earthquake is far enough away from power stations to not have any problems, but some local lines may be affected.

Update: Victorian Police say they have received a number of calls in relation to the tremor. They say they do not have any reports of major damage which is expected with the intensities seen. The news caused immediate panic on the internet. The Geoscience Australia website crashed as people flocked online to see what had happened. We will keep you posted.

Update : This earthquake has been felt at a V intensity at Moe-Yallourn, IV at Morwell, III in Melbourne and other areas. It is likely to have caused some minor damage near the epicenter.

Update : Moe and Latrobe Valley is a famous coalmining and electricity production industry area. In addition, they have had earthquakes recently near Mt. Baw Baw of the same magnitude in 1996, Ml5.0.

So we all make false starts.  Sometimes things seem to be just the way we want them to be.  We feel that we have it all in order, and then something pops up, and plans have to change.  This is okay, and actually, kind of fun from time to time, but this week, it is going to be a theme.  And after a while, it can become really annoying.  So, best option, just let all your plans for the week go and take each day, each moment, as they come.  There are things there that can open you to some stuff you felt deep within but were not quite ready to face.  This week, it is okay.  You are ready for the unexpected.  There is laughter in this.  Perhaps a few tears, and a rearranging of priorities and a total tossing out of the stuff that was always crap, but it has been crap you kept because……..  You can fill in the dots.  They are falling away anyhow.  Take some time to look in the mirror and love WHO you are.  You are opening up many of those mysteries of yourself that you kept under lock and key.  Again, laughter.  When you see them, realize what they are, you can see the why of keeping them hidden.  And, hey, it is not necessary.  You are WHO you are, and for you that is the best WHO ever.

 

On the larger scene, there will be false starts also.  Unfortunately some of them, because of egos and agendas will not have an happy ending, rather they can escalate into some really crazy and potentially dangerous stuff.

A lot of what is going on today is up in the air.  There is not a lot of seriousness because no one is really grounded.  The best thing to do is just to step back and relax.  See what is happening.  There is a lot of stuff that can come out into the open, like that slip showing under the skirt.  You will find yourself wanting to say things, to point things out, but hesitating.  Hesitation is in the air.  So many do not want to know.  It is just the way things are right now.  So…. Be secure and strong in what you know, what you see, what you feel and let all that stuff outside of you just be what it is.

Happy Birthday, Cancer:   Happy Solstice to everyone!!!  This is a day of many layers. Your perspective will determine how you view it.  Even so, you will find that there will be a sense of other things going on.  The layers are each distinct, but now they are touching, and in some cases melting through one to the other.  This can lead to a bit of vertigo or a feeling that things are not quite right.  This is a time for being grounded.  Take time to work within, to center and to calm.  Step back and observe.  This is the longest day of the year.  You have the time and the light to get a sense of the larger picture.  Take advantage of this, as the dark begins to return heading towards the December Solstice when, once again, the light re-emerges.  Know what you know and stay strong within your connection to the Universal Consciousness.

There are residual effects from yesterday’s energies that can cause you to be a bit clumsy in what you are doing today.  Watch what you say and what you do.  It is possible that a little too much might come through, and effect your relationships.  Plans are shifting and changing, and you will be aware of that today.  Things are no longer set in stone.  Set, perhaps, but the certainty is shifting on many different levels.  This is a day for looking into things and asking questions.  You can learn a lot by so doing of motives and actions, but also of the direction of things as time passes.

Clarity is what you will be needing in all of your encounters and exchanges today.  There is a definite movement towards understanding, but, as often happens, even as you feel yourself getting it, there can be things popping up to distract and redirect your attention.  Stay focused.  A good exercise would be, after aligning in the morning, to set a kind of agenda for the day and to hold to that.  It will act as a kind of base to return to if things get crazy.

The two characters are named after Much Wenlock in Shropshire, the village that hosted a precursor to the Olympics in the 19th century, and Stoke Mandeville hospital, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. Each mascot also sports a yellow light atop its head, as a reference to London’s black cabs, and the Olympic Rings get a nod via Wenlock’s bracelets.

The research wasn’t just playtime for quantum physicists: It could be a steppingstone toward the development of a quantum computer, a way to simulate quantum systems (as plant photosynthesis and other natural processes appear to be) that would help solve complex problems far more efficiently than present-day computers can.

The research wasn’t just playtime for quantum physicists: It could be a steppingstone toward the development of a quantum computer, a way to simulate quantum systems (as plant photosynthesis and other natural processes appear to be) that would help solve complex problems far more efficiently than present-day computers can.

The team at the University of Bonn in Germany did a variation on the famous double-slit experiment, which shows how ostensibly solid particles (atoms, electrons and the like) can behave like waves. The researchers found that they could send an atom to two places at once, separated by 10 micrometers (a hundredth of a millimeter — a huge distance for an atom).

Double slits

In the classic double-slit experiment, atoms are fired at a wall with two breaks in it, and they pass through to the other side, where they hit a detector, creating the kind of interference pattern expected from a wave. If atoms behaved the way we intuitively expect particles to behave, they should emerge out of one slit or the other, with no interference pattern. As more and more atoms passed through the slits, there should be a cluster of them around the two points behind the slits.

Since this is quantum mechanics, that’s not what happens.

Instead, there’s an interference pattern that shows peaks and valleys. The atoms behave like light waves. The atom is in two places at once.

But if you try to see the atom in one or both places, it “collapses” into one, as the act of observing it determines its fate; hence, the interference pattern disappears.

Atomic twins

In the experiment at Bonn, the researchers fired two lasers in sequence at a single atom of cesium, moving it to the left or right. The lasers allowed the researchers to control the movement of the atom precisely, in a way that the old-fashioned double slit would not. (Before firing the lasers, the researchers cooled the atom to within a hair of absolute zero, eliminating most of its own movement.)

Each atom has a spin state, which is either up or down. By moving the atom in two directions at once (using both lasers), the scientists were able to make it “split.” Unlike splitting an atom into its constituent subatomic particles, as happens in radioactive decay, in this case the atom was essentially splitting into a set of twins. It was in two states at once — up and down.

It’s not possible to see both states at once. If one were to try to measure the state of the atom, it would “collapse” into a single state. But when one looks at the atom at the end of its journey, the combination of the two states can be measured.

Since atoms — and other quantum particles — behave like waves, they have phases, just as waves do. (The phase is the particular point in the cycle of a wave, and is measured by degrees. Two waves that are the same shape and 180 degrees out of phase with each other will cancel each other out as one’s trough aligns with the other’s crest. Waves in phase with each other will add up as one crest aligns with the other crest).

The laser distorts the wave phase when it moves the atom to the left or right. So there is now a difference in the phases of the two spin states when the atom arrives at its destination and is no longer “split.” Even though it’s not possible to see both states at once, when one looks at the atom at the end of its journey, the combination of the two states can be measured.

Controlling qubits

In addition to measuring that phase difference, the researchers also saw “delocalization” — the double path through space the atom takes — at a greater distance than ever before, on the scale of micrometers as opposed to nanometers.

It’s this dual nature, called a superposed state, of atoms that would make quantum computers so powerful. The bits (known as “qubits”) could be in more than one state at once, allowing for calculations that would take ordinary computers an extremely long time. It also means that quantum computers could be useful for simulating other quantum systems.

Physicist Andrea Alberti, one of the paper’s co-authors, said that’s why in the future the researchers want to experiment with more atoms. “With two atoms, you have four different trajectories, but only one is where they are ‘meeting,'” he said. By controlling the phase of more atoms, you have more bits. One could think of it as two bits in all four possible states at once.

It isn’t clear, he said, what minimum number of bits would be needed to make a working quantum computer. But the fact that scientists can control the phase states of a single atom means it should be possible to do the same thing with more than one.

The point, Alberti said, is to build a way of simulating quantum systems. Right now that is difficult because the calculations are so complex. But a quantum computing system lends itself to such calculations better than a classical computer does.

Last month, the global average temperature climbed to the second highest for May on record since 1880, according to U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) records.

Much of the world, including nearly all of Europe, Asia, northern Africa, most of North America and southern Greenland experienced above average May temperatures. In fact, last month wrapped up the warmest spring on record for the continental U.S., NOAA records show.

The global May record included the combined global land and ocean average surface temperatures for the month, which 1.19 degrees Fahrenheit (0.66 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average of 58.5 F (14.8 C). This record was beat only in 2010, when the global average was 1.24 F (0.69 C) above the 20th-century average.

The Northern Hemisphere saw its warmest May on record — 1.53 F, or 0.85 C above average — while the Southern Hemisphere’s May ranked ninth warmest among all Mays on record, at 0.85 F (0.47 C) above average.

Of course, it wasn’t unusually warm everywhere. Australia, Alaska and parts of the western U.S.-Canadian border were notably cooler than average.

Snow cover on the Northern Hemisphere was significantly below average in May, according to NOAA records.

Globally, this spring ranked as the fourth warmest. Meanwhile, May brought a slew of temperature records to the continental U.S. after an unusually warm spring and mild winter.

Because of natural fluctuations in weather, climate scientists are loath to connect events that occur over a short-time frame, from a strong storm to an unusual warm spring, to climate change. However, the warming effect of humans’ greenhouse gas emissions forms a backdrop for the weather the world is experiencing and shows up as a longer-term trend. It is not a coincidence that the first decade of this century was the warmest on record, according to NOAA’s State of Climate in 2010 report.
