Mexican Poet Reflects on Drug War

A Poet Rewrites the War on Drugs

by Madhu Suri Prakash

After the death of his son, poet Javier Sicilia gave voice to the anguish of the Mexican people—and started a powerful movement of moral indignation against the senseless slaughter of the war on drugs.

Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Greece, Spain…all these countries’ popular revolts have captured our attention for very good reasons. From Mexico, in contrast, we get only images of a vicious drug war.

But something remarkable is happening in Mexico.

On March 28 this year, the prominent poet Javier Sicilia lost his 24-year-old son, Juan Francisco, to senseless assassination, allegedly by a drug gang leader, just weeks before he was to graduate from the university. Javier transformed his pain—“this is my last poem,” he wrote; “I no longer have poetry in my heart”—into a movement of moral indignation against the mass killings of innocent people.

His public letter to both politicians and criminals gave voice to the nation’s anguish. Like the Zapatista cry:Basta ya! in 1994, Javier summarized the unbearable with Estamos hasta la madre (an untranslatable expression to say what can no longer be borne or suffered). Javier’s pain moved people to join his call for dialogue and transparency with the politicians, police, drug lords, and all those paralyzed by fear into silence. In these short weeks, he has become a source of inspiration for millions. Thousands marched from Cuernavaca to Mexico City, ending with a massive rally in the capital’s main square. Later, this march turned into a caravan that traveled to the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez and then crossed into El Paso, Texas, for a rally with supporters.

Those who find hope in this peaceful, democratic mobilization are describing it as a new kind of revolution.

Madhu Suri Prakash, a contributing editor to YES! Magazine, interviewed Javier in July.

New NASA Research Points to Possible HAARP Connection in Japan Earthquake, Tsunami

Recent data released by Dimitar Ouzounov and colleagues from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland highlights some strange atmospheric anomalies over Japan just days before the massive earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11. Seemingly inexplicable and rapid heating of the ionosphere directly above the epicenter reached a maximum only three days prior to the quake, according to satellite observations, suggesting that directed energy emitted from transmitters used in the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) may have been responsible for inducing the quake.

Published in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) publication Technology Review, the findings are presented alongside a different theory called Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling, which hypothesizes that the heating in the ionosphere may have been caused by the impending earthquake as the fault line released radioactive radon. This theory, of course, is not actually proven, but is instead presented as a possible explanation for the presence of the high-density electrons and emitted infrared radiation that was observed

Unusual Steam Venting North of L.A.

CONFIRMED ! SMOKE and STEAM coming out from the ground in south California

Posted on August 15, 2011 by dutchsinse

LITERALLY, smoke and steam coming out of the ground just NORTH of Los Angeles !!! just 2 days ago !

(video at:    http://www.dutchsinse.com/blog/)

This 100% validates the plume activity we saw 3 weeks ago to the north east of Los Angeles, and all the way up the west coast … exactly what I thought it would look like.. steam venting like a very large fumerole, but on a MASSIVE scale all the way up the west coast.

Taken in conjunction with the announcement this past week of fresh lava flows off the coast of Oregon, I would say we have a full blown seismic event underway on the west coast of the USA.

(TheWeatherSpace.com) — Comet Honda is expected to pass by the Earth today above the South Pole at a distance of only 5.6 million miles.

This is about 23 times the distance from Earth to the moon. Will the comet cause an effects on our planet? Probably not, but Earth may actually alter this 0.6 mile across rock some.

The coma extends out to 43,000 miles and is currently a magnitude 8.0 in the Southern skies. The coma from Earth is half the width of the Full moon, which makes it a large night sky object for favored Southern observers.

On October 7th of 2011 (this year), Comet Honda will brighten to a magnitude 5 in the constellation Leo and favor a horizon view before sunrise for Northern sky observers.

That is not all, Comet Honda will join Comet Elenin and both will be visible on that morning in the same wide field of view in Binoculars and camera lenses, a rare treat with two comets at once!

Soputan volcano Sulawesi, Indonesia : New eruption on 14-15/08/2011 + alert level increase + eruption and damage videos

Last update: August 15, 2011 at 8:17 am by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell

UPDATE 15/08-07:20 UTC : The eruption is still going on but is weakening a little bit.  Visual observation of the volcano has detected  at least 40 debris avalanches around the craters. This means that volcanic activity is still continuing. The safety No-Go radius has been widened yesterday to  6 km. The closest village just outside the dangerous perimeter is Desa Kota Menara.

UPDATE 14/08-17:30 UTC : A couple of minutes ago “TheBuracho69″ has uploaded a video of the eruption on YouTube. The quality is not super, but the video footage shows very well the strength of the ash cloud. The last images are showing the strongest part of the eruption

An exasperated University of Tokyo professor who launched an angry tirade at lawmakers over the Fukushima nuclear crisis has become a hero to many on the Internet.

Tatsuhiko Kodama, 58, who heads the Radioisotope Center at Todai, was called to provide expert testimony before the Lower House Health, Labor and Welfare Committee on July 27.

Facing a panel of lawmakers, Kodama said, “At a time when 70,000 people have left their homes and have no idea where to go, what is the Diet doing?”

Video footage of Kodama’s testimony was soon posted on YouTube, and within a few days, the video had been viewed more than 200,000 times.

Responses to the footage were generally favorable.

“I was deeply moved that Todai has a professor like him,” said one post.

“I understand the scary truth. I understand the inaction of the central government,” said another.

Besides being a doctor of internal medicine, Kodama is also an expert on internal radiation exposure. His background made even more shocking the testimony he provided in the Diet.

Calculating Dog Years

Calculating the Real Age of Your Dog

By TARA PARKER-POPE
Is your dog a senior or a teen?Steve Goldstein for The New York Times and Fred Greaves, via ReutersIs your dog a senior or a teenager?

Most people think that one dog year equals seven human years. But according to WebMD, your dog’s real age is not that simple:

Dogs mature more quickly than children in the first couple of years. So the first year of a dog’s life is equal to about 15 human years, rather than seven.

Size and breed also influence the rate at which a dog ages. Although smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs, they may mature more quickly in the first few years of life. A large dog may mature more slowly at first but already be considered elderly at age 5. Small and toy breeds don’t become “seniors” until around age 10. Medium-size breeds are somewhere in the middle in terms of maturation and life span.

To find out how old your dog really is, check out WebMD’s dog age calculation chart, which estimates your dog’s equivalent human age based on how old it is and whether it is a small, medium or large breed.

Tanning Is a Drug?

How Tanning Changes the Brain

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
The brains of frequent tanners may be similar to those of addicts.Tony Cenicola/The New York TimesThe brains of frequent tanners may be similar to those of addicts.

People who frequently use tanning beds experience changes in brain activity during their tanning sessions that mimic the patterns of drug addiction, new research shows.

Scientists have suspected for some time that frequent exposure to ultraviolet radiation has the potential to become addictive, but the new research is the first to actually peer inside the brains of people as they lay in tanning beds.

What the researchers found was that several parts of the brain that play a role in addiction were activated when the subjects were exposed to UV rays. The findings, which appear in the coming issue of the journal Addiction Biology, may help explain why some people continue to tan often despite awareness about risks such as skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkles.

“What this shows is that the brain is in fact responding to UV light, and it responds in areas that are associated with reward,” said Dr. Bryon Adinoff, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and an author of the study. “These are areas, particularly the striatum, that we see activated when someone is administered a drug or a high-value food like sugar.”
